Europe War in Ukraine - Thread 4 - thread rules updated

This is the thread for discussing the War in Ukraine. Should you want to discuss the geopolitics, the history, or an interesting tangent, head over here:

If a post isn't directly concerning the events of the war or starts to derail the thread, report the post to us and we'll move it over there.

Seeing as multiple people seem to have forgotten, abuse is against the rules of BF. Continuous, page long attacks directed at a single poster in this thread will result in threadbans for a week from this point; doing so again once you have returned will make the bans permanent and will be escalated to infractions.

This thread still has misinformation rules, and occasionally you will be asked to demonstrate a claim you have made by moderation. If you cannot, you will be offered the opportunity to amend the post to reflect that it's opinion, to remove the post, or you will be threadbanned and infracted for sharing misinformation.

Addendum: from this point, use of any variant of the word 'orc' to describe combatants, politicians or russians in general will be deleted and the poster will receive a warning. If the behaviour continues, it will be escalated. Consider this fair warning.

Finally: If I see the word Nazi or Hitler being flung around, there had better have a good faith basis as to how it's applicable to the Russian invasion - as in, video/photographic evidence of POW camps designed to remove another ethnic group - or to the current Ukrainian army. If this does not occur, you will be threadbanned for posting off topic

This is a sensitive area, and I understand that this makes for fairly incensed conversation sometimes. This does not mean the rules do not apply, whether to a poster positing a Pro-Ukraine stance or a poster positing an alternative view.

Behave, people.

Appeal from saveukraineua.org who work to return stolen Ukrainian children. Pulled from from [Gersaschenko's TG].

"They beat me so hard that I started to lose consciousness. They tore people's nails off, electrocuted, tortured and kept people in cages."

Eight more children from the occupied territories have been returned to Ukraine. According to the Save Ukraine charity organization, children from 7 to 17 years old from the occupied part of Kherson and Donetsk regions are among them.

In total, the Save Ukraine team managed to rescue 405 children from Russia and the temporarily occupied territories.

Russia is still trying to create it's own version of Wikipedia called RUWiki. Basically the same thing but under state oversight and without open collab. The reference to "1984" lacking mention of the Ministry of Truth is so meta it hurts. Bucha is fake, Navalny was a blogger.

The Kremlin has decided to rewrite "Wikipedia" and create a new version of history, reports The Economist.

Specifically, Moscow aims to achieve this through its own censored version of the RuWiki resource.

"Wikipedia" has faced challenges from the Kremlin before, with Russian censors threatening it almost from the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine in 2014. However, the publication noted that it only became clear at the end of 2023 that Moscow was serious about replacing it.

RuWiki, as Russian censors call the project, is largely a direct copy of "Wikipedia." However, in the Russian version, the most sensitive historical moments are omitted or rewritten. Kremlin ideologues hope that millions of Russians will now accept these revised versions as truth.

The RuWiki project could be called Orwellian if the British author were not subject to periodic censorship himself. For example, the article about "1984" lacks the site's usual description of Winston Smith's Ministry of Truth, which "corrects" the historical record.

The atrocities committed by Russians in Bucha near Kyiv in 2022 are reinterpreted as a "Ukrainian and Western disinformation campaign." Kherson, destroyed by Russian bombs, is mentioned without any reference to the war. The execution of nearly 22,000 Polish officers in Katyn in 1940 has been rewritten to cast doubt on archival documents proving it was carried out by Soviet special services.

There is no mention of "Putin h..ylo!" — a contemptuous catchphrase mocking the Russian leader. All references to Alexei Navalny, considered a Russian opposition leader, have been changed to describe him merely as a "blogger."

An analysis of the site by the independent Russian media organization Mediazona shows that the vast majority of new edits are made during business hours on weekdays. This suggests that the editing is done by teams of paid authors, unlike Wikipedia's volunteer model.

They seem to go in waves. It was Richmond for a while and then, embarrassingly, West Coast. It’s almost like they shift between clubs.
Yeah, we had a good representation in the cooker stakes during covid, but like the actual footy team we've slipped down the ladder in recent years.

Freo and North have always punched above their weight of actual support in the vatnik/cooker premiership table.

Seems nobody else mentioned this yet:

Nothing to see here. Just pigs eating dead Russian soldier corpses.

So we've won something now?

Or still need to beat NM in the GF?

Don't get your hopes up, North have got you well covered in the cooker stakes and they will be holding up the silverware, a pressure cooker containing a 'Putin for Peace' colouring book*, Andrew Tates foreskin and a special new bleach that kills not only Covid19 but also influenza, RSV, wokeness, compassion etc.

I been sick. Need some "there there poor boy" plskthx

Ukraine have reportedly moved in with heft in the northern Vovchansk region causing all manner of strife for RF. Potential risks of cutting off more RF troops in middle of town (some maps suggest this, others dont). Those RF that got trapped in a factory in Sthn Vovchansk are reportedly also still trapped there.

Ukraine have reportedly left the Dnipro left bank bridgeheads around Krynki etc (across river from Kherson). Some suggestions attach this to the changes made in upper command - new thinktanks, different thinking. There are still Ukrainian bridgeheads on some of the islands (arguably not bridgeheads as they are really placements and dont suggest potential launchpads).

Kursk plant attack was a big one apparently, took a bit of putting out.

More RF attacks on Ukrainian cities around the country, casualties do not seem to be substantial (unless if you're one of them).

And various posts about RF soldiers complaining about being sent to fight after promises they'd be in the background, or sent to fight after being hospitalised with unhealed previous war injuries.

A small group of Ukrainians wanting to flee Ukraine to avoid consciption resulted in a shootout with border guards and one of the fleers was killed. Just getting it out there before someone entropes it into "shot for trying to cross the border".

Trump's intended VP is defoes bad news for Ukraine. I sense RF claws deep within him.

So shot for trying to cross the border to escape conscription?

Being armed just shows they were quite committed, they are facing barbed wire and well armed border crossings

No, shot for attacking the border guard. Dunno if self-defence or over-reaction to perceived self-defence. Although it's all under investigation right now as the border guard is in the hot seat for opening fire. Found out more and there's another reason they were armed (see below). Have no idea if there's any barbed wire. There are border crossings that with guarded checkpoints and those guards are armed - that's all I know.

But it was a dot list as I am trying to remember various stories i looked at over a the last week while crook. Just googled it now and I got 2 things out of whack actually.
1. They weren't headed for the border to escape conscription after all, they were already servicemen in a training unit (whether conscripted or volunteer is not stated - and reasons for heading for border wouldn['t be a dichotomy either. Likely assumption would be that they didn't wanna go fight on the frontline for fear of death of injury).
2. They attacked the border guards but it doesn't specify they were actually armed. (Which makes me think that's what the investigation would mostly be spurred by - why did this border guard decide to shoot him and was he trigger-happy).

"During the attempt to cross the border, the border guards noticed them and detained them. One of the fugitives attacked a border guard while trying to escape. In response, he used a service weapon and shot the attacker."

Article from Ukrains Bureau of Investigation:

I got a Ukrainian friend in Chisinau in Moldova, I could ask her if she knows this story and has an opinion, But she's trying to recover from the trauma of living in central Ukraine and I've been avoiding bothering her with reminders.

From Navaya Gazeta online news source per Facebook:

A Russian combat drone flew into the territory of Belarus and exploded
This is reported by the monitoring group "Belaruski Gayun". According to specialists, a "shahed" kamikaze drone entered Belarus at 8:40 and crashed in the October district of the Gomel region, 55 km from Bobruisk and 120 km from the border with Ukraine.
Analysts claim that there was an explosion after the drone fell. According to them, this confirms that the drone is neither training nor reconnaissance, but combat, and was intended to attack Ukraine.
"Belaruski Gayun" notes that this is the fourth drone that has flown to the territory of Belarus in the last week. The authorities of the country have not yet commented on this information.

I still think North are vulnerable in the cooker stakes because, as much as they have some out-and-out stars, they are also having to carry Chadwiko who gives them absolutely nothing (I'll go as far to say they are stronger when he is omitted, he upsets their team balance).

Russia has lost over 1/2 million troops in Ukraine in this war so far.

This should help the numbers even more. Russia bringing out the heavy equipment…

At Least Five Golf Carts Laden With Russian Soldiers Rolled Toward Ukrainian Lines. The Outcome Was All But Inevitable

The devolution of Russian mechanized forces helps explain the spike in Russian casualties.

An attack by at least five Russian golf carts laden with infantry ended in the usual way on or just before Monday, when Ukrainian forces blasted the flimsy all-terrain vehicles, halting the attack and likely inflicting heavy casualties on the Russians.
