Europe War in Ukraine - Thread 4 - thread rules updated

This is the thread for discussing the War in Ukraine. Should you want to discuss the geopolitics, the history, or an interesting tangent, head over here:

If a post isn't directly concerning the events of the war or starts to derail the thread, report the post to us and we'll move it over there.

Seeing as multiple people seem to have forgotten, abuse is against the rules of BF. Continuous, page long attacks directed at a single poster in this thread will result in threadbans for a week from this point; doing so again once you have returned will make the bans permanent and will be escalated to infractions.

This thread still has misinformation rules, and occasionally you will be asked to demonstrate a claim you have made by moderation. If you cannot, you will be offered the opportunity to amend the post to reflect that it's opinion, to remove the post, or you will be threadbanned and infracted for sharing misinformation.

Addendum: from this point, use of any variant of the word 'orc' to describe combatants, politicians or russians in general will be deleted and the poster will receive a warning. If the behaviour continues, it will be escalated. Consider this fair warning.

Finally: If I see the word Nazi or Hitler being flung around, there had better have a good faith basis as to how it's applicable to the Russian invasion - as in, video/photographic evidence of POW camps designed to remove another ethnic group - or to the current Ukrainian army. If this does not occur, you will be threadbanned for posting off topic

This is a sensitive area, and I understand that this makes for fairly incensed conversation sometimes. This does not mean the rules do not apply, whether to a poster positing a Pro-Ukraine stance or a poster positing an alternative view.

Behave, people.

I was surprised to see this after earlier denials, the CoA are donating 49 of our Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
Australian tanks seeing actual combat.
You'd have thought.

Sources told CNN in September that Tehran had recently completed the delivery of short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. Iran has vehemently denied supplying any. “Iran has NOT delivered ballistic missiles to Russia. Period!” Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently stated on his X account.

And yet we still have people on this forum who seem to think Iran is some wonderful force for good for fighting against Israel. Absolute scum out there helping to kill so many innocent civilians.

$170 million is so paltry when a large component of that is the value of our older M1 tanks that were due for decommissioning.

For comparison Putin regularly wastes up to a billion on a single cruise missile barrages against Ukraine.

Send Ukraine one of the AUKUS subs ehen they arrive in 2090

A truncated and censored version of Zelenskys victory plan was presented to Ukrainian government today. Obviously many elements are still classified. I'm on a bus so can't share it right now. Should be all over the media, tho.

Poor Russia, getting kicked out of Norway. Nothing like another salty threat from Zahrakova on social media. These things happen to states that are invaders of a neighbor and try to impose fascism on them.

They're not even bothering with NATO conspiracies on this one which would seem a bit desperate considering they've been a member since 1949.

Saudi Arabia threatening to increase production of oil despite pleas from Russia. to not increase production.....

Considering Urals oil consistently trades around $10 under brent crude this would see oil resource income plummet even further for Russia.

Breakeven for urals oil is $41 / bbl.............

There you go. Gist of it is defense production agreements with other countries, hold off Russia until it comes to the negotiating table, garner more support.

Most importantly it doesn't involve Russian action as any such plan will not work with the Russian soviet era fascist leadership calling the shots.

Who here knows their tank stuff? Seems to me the M1 tanks we are donating are 20-30 years old.

They are M1A1 AIM, which means they where built back in the late 80's but reconditioned to zero hour condition and improved with better sensors and other gear. The armour package is not the latest and best, but the US does not allow the best armour package to be sent to Ukraine anyway. We got them newly reconditioned in 2006, but they have been used by us since then, so will need some further reconditioning.

Are they the best version? Not even close but still much better than anything Russia has.

Would it be safe to say they were close to retirement anyway?

I'm just happy they got there, was worried they were going the way of the helicopters

Hopefully it embarrasses a few European countries (and the US post election if Harris wins) into giving more tanks. WTF is a country on the other side of the world providing the most modern Western tanks?! Yes, it's an older version of the M1, but I'd still classify as modern (especially in comparison to T-55's, T-62's and T-72's).

I'd classify the modern tanks shipped as M1's, Challengers and Leopard 2's (not Leopard 1's). Look across those numbers and the contributions by Europe especially are pathetic. They could easily between them ship a 1000 tanks. Yes, in the short term, they'd be having reduced tank numbers themselves, until they can be replaced. Given though they need them to fight a potential war against Russia sometime in the future, sending them to Ukraine now to deplete Russian tank, APC and IFV numbers in Ukraine, rather than further West, should be a no-brainer. Weak-willed fearful politicians throughout the West, too afraid of Russia collapsing, or using Nukes.
