Expanding!

Saints won't be happy, it's kind of their territory.

They won't be, but it's not like we should have a say in where your club builds your HQ. Congrats to you guys. This is what successful clubs can do. It's a nice reward for all the good work over the last decade

Anyways it's no secret that hawthorn are going after the saints territory/don't look fondly on them. Your presidents comments on equalisation showed that (I.e. The mismanagement stuff which was only directed at us)

I think what this shows is that the poorer clubs are pretty much screwed and will not be able to keep up with the likes of your club especially in a changing sporting landscape where more and more young people are turning to the clubs with a history of success, soccer or are just not interested in sport

FYI the saints move to Moorabbin is a done deal. We just need to find 5m. Which will be very hard to do given we are 10+m in debt (this will probably grow even off the back of very large cuts). It won't be anything like what you will have though

It must be remembered that Hawthorn were up poo creek without a paddle and nearly merged with Melbourne. It's been a hell of a journey in turning it around.

50 million is less than one years turnover. Compare that to the average home loan being 4.5 times annual income and you can see it is not a stretch to be able to pay for this facility.

Great move by the club to secure our future. The good times don't last forever but with facilities like the one proposed we can hope to enjoy more good years than bad.

Didn't realise how many suburb snobs there were on this board. Yes, Dingley isn't in CBD but it's not like you need to book a flight to get there.

Please note that there are Hawthorn supporters everywhere, not just in the inner eastern suburbs.

This is a monumental move for our club. Not bad considering we almost merged less than 20 years ago.

If any one is upset about the location I wouldn't be. Very easily accessible by car and with the new facility Im sure more bus routes will be planned to go past it.

Also it's a good way to get new support from an are that is not a noted Hawks stronghold.

Great location aside from public transport. If you don't have a car, there are buses that go down Tootal Road from nearby train stations. Plenty of Hawks supporters around that area so I'm sure quite a few supporters will be happy with the news.

Considering the expanding population around the area and the cost of housing in Dingley, I'm quite surprised we could get the land for only $8 mill. In ten years time, we'll look back on that as an absolute steal!! Land and properties around Dingley are quite expensive, so I don't know where all the 'low life' references are coming from. If the dregs of humanity ever lived there, they would have been kicked out due to the cost of living in that area.

From what I understand, there was some EPA investigation regarding quality of air a few years ago, but they've been pushing hard to get rid of the tips/sites creating such smells. I don't know how successful that's been, but hopefully it's resolved by the time facilities are set up.

We are looking to be a major player in terms of sporting clubs in Australia with the size of the land purchase, and I'm hoping from the tour of English soccer clubs that we now have an idea of how to set things up properly and not just build ad-hoc. With ovals for public and private training, a proper museum, gym, restaurants, etc, this really could become Hawks Land. Can't wait for the amusement park to be set up, with the '2015 Season' roller coaster, the 'SuperSuckling Escapes Box Hill' ride, the 'Tower of Tazza' (Lewis himself will be helming the controls on that one), 'Jed Rescue' and my favourite (a water ride), the 'Temple of Schoey'.

* If you're unfamiliar with the Gold Coast Theme Parks, my apologies for most of these ride names going over your heads. :p

Anyone know if this allotment encompasses the Dingley paint ball centre?

Paintball is on the other side of Boundary Rd, walking distance.
Its also 10mins to the beach for recovery.

Also re: the tips nearby, one is closing next year and the local council dont want them there anymore, they refused the planning permit for that one and the EPA are on their backs.

I did, I'm always amazed how many people don't know anything about the suburbs past Hawthorn....It's arrogance.

Great move by the football club! The South East Corridor would no doubt be where the majority of our supporter base is.

Not convinced on the location.
On an old tip, next to other tips, industrial areas, airport, Springvale and Noble Park.
By far the busiest train line after our games is Belgrave/Lilydale, then Glen Waverley, this new location is even further away from this main supporter base than Mulgrave. They say one of the reasons is to enable more supporter involvement - they're kidding themselves if they think people are going to go there.

They are currently working on the Dingley Bypass in that area, so I'm almost positive the tip next door is going.

Down the track it will also link up with the Mornington Peninsula Freeway.

I'd like to think that, given our current leadership, due dilligence has been done and the surrounding area - once quarries, tips and market gardens - will be regenerated into a more 'up-market' location. Considering the area is good enough for Kingston Heath and the Capital Golf Club, I trust the club will make the right choice.

Good to see that most are supportive of the move. No qualms with those raising potentially legitimate concerns - to the outliers in the instant naysayer column though, in the interest of efficiency and being helpful I have made the following templates for you:

Why didn’t they build it in [insert suburb], it’s closer to my home. They could have easily purchased [insert location that was likely not feasible hence why the club is not purchasing it] and built it there. [insert petulant whiny comment about how unfair this all is].

Why didn’t they build it in [insert inner-city suburb where land is scarce and incredibly expensive], it would be so much better than [insert geographical snobbery comment to feel superior]. [insert petulant whiny comment about how unfair this all is].

Love the idea. Though i guess we have to wait on all the due diligence stuff yet. I expect by the time that comes around, there'll be a clearer picture of our intentions.

We were always going to outgrow Waverley. Was surprised that 'someone' used to spruik that it would mean we had the best facilities in the league, would put us at at the top of tree, would be an investment for decades .... was so obviously short sighted, either in what they dared dream the Hawks would become, or the growing realities of what is truly required to be top notch in this game. Anyhoo ...

So much potential. This site will grow and evolve with us for decades. This is truly going to future proof us.

And I don't see why a boutique stadium or anything else should ever be off the agenda. Who's to say what we will be looking or thinking in next decade, or three. Nor would I dismiss the possibility of working towards an "arrangement" with the Saints to share some facilities (some games at our stadium), if the price was right.

Ooooh, I must try and stay focussed on the 4 points this week, and the real prize.:)

Construction barriers and lane diversions already up at Westall Rd interchange area for around 6-8 weeks now...

Wouldn't call ourselves suburban snobs:) but as inner city dwellers north of the yarra a short drive to the eastern fwy and continuing along eastlink will be there in no time:D. Eastlink has served our family extremely well since its opening cutting the travel time to the southern suburbs and mornington penninsula
beaches and weekend escapedes to the vineyards. A trip to Dingley to watch the Hawks train over summer and then a weekend away down at the penninsula.

Great move by the club, have to keep ahead of the pack, especially when the AFL will ensure the northern state clubs succeed for TV money.

I've posted in the Awesome Mega thread about the fact the land is green wedge zoned which pretty much only allows agricultural use.

If we get this rezoned and built for $50-60 million we will then have an asset on the books valued at multiple times that amount... $120 million at the least.

Cigars all round!! :D:thumbsu:

How do we continue to be super-dooper clever about... everything??!!
