to Chesire-Cat:

No-one is saying we should tolerate the loss. No-one is suggesting we should accept mediocrity as has been our culture of the past. We are all pissed off in extreme that they lost. I think only 1500 turning up to family day is a pretty fair indication that most Geelong Supporters are angry right now.

The point of this thread is to say yeah we hate losing, especially the Grand Final against Hawthorn, we f@cking hate it......but win, lose or draw we will stand by our team. That is what being a true supporter is all about and when we win our next flag (which I don't think will be to far off) the victory will be even sweeter.

But right now, I am fuming at those blokes.

I feel much better after reading this thread, thank you!

what gets to me the most is that just about everyone who isn't a geelong supporter sided with the hawks this year!? why?! is everyone else finding that? I can sort of handle coppng it from hawks fans (less so their fairweather fans) but people who don't even support either team!! what do you say to the essendon supporters, the crows supporters who go out of their way to cause you pain just cause you wear your heart on your sleeve? i'm not and never have been a cocky or obnoxious supporter, so i don't think i deserve that.

i also still proudly wore my cats gear yesterday, i'm not ashamed. i just think back to the absolute bliss of this time last year, and rest assured in the knowledge that we've got absolute GUNS to return.

Yep, fair enough CF.

Amen to that! :thumbsu:

One thing I am proud of the boys about, and that is they are as gracious in defeat as they are in victory. Watching Gary walk up to every Hawks player after the game to shake hands was first class, and Tom's speech was great as well.

I know winners are grinners, but it really pissed me off how almost every Hawks player had to yell "Yeah!" into the microphone after receiving their medallion. That was something you didn't see us doing last year. IMO, that smacks of arrogance. Did anyone else feel the same way?

agree - geelong were very gracious...and gary a true sportsman...but i dont think showing a sign of pure emotion on receiving the premiership medallion is any sign of arrogance....

I was so pumped for the game that i decided to streak my brown hair blond and blue. it looks awesome and I refuse to dye it back just because we lost. I have copped a few insults for it but scr@w them, only one of them have been a hawks supporter, no other team made it to the grand final so I don't think they have a right to comment.

I still support my boys whole heartedly and I will be renewing my membership next year with pleasure.

Thanks boys for an awesome year. last year i was on tender hooks all year waiting for when we would fall back into our old "losing games we should win" habit. this year I went into every round not so much expecting to win but there was no feeling of is this the day we fall into old habits.

well done on an almost great year.

Re: We Are GEELONG!!!......

Well how would you describe it? Colsest thing to it I'd say. Second loss for the year and its a Grand Final! ****ing hell, imagined if that happened at a real club like Essendon - Windy Hill would be burnt to the ground. Only at Geelong could such an intolerable result be tolerated.

shit man. i wasn't the one featherin' the f**k outta their nest during the season either.

Agree 100%. Going back to the OP, maybe if some of these bandwagon-jumpers get off the bandwagon, the true supporters will have a better chance in the stupid ballot should we make it again in 09

It is too easy to come on here after losing a GF and start pointing fingers or claiming to have the magic bullet.

Like all of you I'm hurting. But it is times like these that show the kind of person you are. It is times like these that the football club shows what it is made of.

I know a lot of comments that have been posted here are a result of pain and anger (who says it is just a game?) but mostly because of passion.

Members and supporters alike bleed when the club bleeds but you have to hang tough and ride it out. We all got 2 years of joy from the club. Personally, as gutted as I am, I can't point fingers and look for scapegoats. It just went wrong at the wrong time and we came up against a Hawthorn team that played pretty damn well in my eyes.

Geelong lost 2 games all year, sadly one of those was one that really mattered.

But we must, WILL, rise again as one and stand up and fight like hell!

Great OP CF - and a great job by you and the other mods this year.

As a Geelong supporter of 30 odd years I’ve got to talk to someone! This really hurts.
I haven’t even seen the game yet. We were out camping. I thought I would just listen to the end of the game so I could watch the replay without knowing the story. I’ve got the pleasant task of watching the replay tonight – and it’s my birthday.
Hearing talk of us being certainties was always a worry. Even though I thought we would win by thirty. Was s****ing myself all week though. I just thought we were too good and too strong and too focused to be rolled.
I’ve never felt this bad. I’ve got so much faith in this team. Playing off and losing in 1980-81, ’89 was amazing, tried hard in ’92 against a better team and ’94 and ’95 were just kind of numbing.
Having said that, I just love Geelong. Some of you may know the Rod Stewart song about supporting Celtic. I can’t remember the name of it but whenever I hear it it sums up for me how I feel about Geelong “you’re in my heart, you’re in my soul”. This bunch gave me a Premiership last year, so at last I got to feel how everyone else seems to have felt in the last week of September over the last 30 years. They will be treasured by me forever for that. There is a window of at least a couple of years to be there at the pointy end of September. You would have to think that there is a reasonable chance of another Premiership in that time.
Bloody Geelong though. Just when you think you can rely on them…

I still can't believe we lost.......I'm literally in shock, I can't comprehend how this could have happened. Maybe with so much supply coming into the forward 50, the boys just thought goals would happen & perhaps relaxed a little too much ?. Bomber implied something similar in his post match press conference when he said something like: "maybe the players thought that because we were getting so much supply into the forward line then eventually overtaking Hawthorn would just happen;" & thats just wrong". Or maybe we were just unlucky ? I don't know, but whatever happened, was a tragedy, but I guess no one would feel as bad as the Geelong players and perhaps it will spur them on to bigger and better things, I hope so anyway.

Love the cats and always will, you stick with them through the good and the bad, I was shattered :( on saturday like the rest of you but I would never jump off, Ive been folllowing them for 47 years and will do for another 47.

how do they do pre season after a loss like that

will perfection be the theme or revenge?

what message will bomba give them to keep them most importantly fresh

and hungry?

we had a scratchy start in 08 with a couple of close ones the start of 09 will be crucial it will tell alot about the psyche of the players

but we are Geelong

As Geelong supporters i thought we'd already perfected the art of not taking anything for granted. From next year on it's been made sure that i will never, ever...EVER think that anything is for certain....ever!

It is perfectly reasonable and in fact right to be angry and upset right now. The side let us down on Saturday, and they know it, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't let them know that we know it too. The players and coaches need to make sure that they learn from this experience, and saying things like we still had a great year and it was only our second loss aint going to cut it.

That said, we still all need to get on board again next year. We do still have a great side - one that is capable of winning another flag - so lets support them as much as we can to give them the best chance of doing that.

It is unconditional love, but we shouldn't blow smoke up their backsides when they don't deserve it. Its "I'm staying right behind you, but you've let me down. Badly. Don't do it again."

Well it looks like Mr Hickey has made some effort to balance this "Who wants to be the greatest supporter in our hour of need" competition!

Guys/gals get over yourself. It was way too early to be handing out badges to the gold class supporters and crosses and minuses to those who you all felt reacted badly to Saturdays' shattering defeat.

I am not singling anyone out here but it was a terrible shock...an absolute shock to the system after quarter time...why not ask people again in a few days a few weeks or a few months how they feel and then you will get a better idea of what each and every supporter is truly made of.

Apparently Bomber on Saturday night was not his usual calm affable self either. Yes he is the coach and we are just supporters but we all have something in common...we are all human. Lets learn something from the Geelong Footy Club this year and be human and not just say things like "we arent feeling the pressure"...maybe if some of them adopted more of an "honesty policy" too we wouldnt be in this mess once again after another failed Grand Final appearance where we simply didnt handle the pressure at all well as a team.

I'm numb still, and to be honest, the past week feels like a bad dream that somebody will wake me up from and tell me that tomorrow is the Grand Final still.
I have held off writing and saying too much this week in hope of just letting it sink in, and in hope of not saying something I don't mean out of anger and frustration.

It's great to read this board all week though and hear the support thats still there for us, and I have total faith that this will not only hurt the guys tremendously, but if it could possibly happen. Make them even stronger next year. Never understimate the pain of a losing Grand Final and deep down belly rage that drives you the next year to make ammends for it. Forget Grand Final hangover's like the early 90's, our Cats team is way to good for that. It was an amazing season and we lost the one game when it counted, doesn't take away how good of a team this is.

This will hurt for a long time, and in the hot sweltering days when they're running up and down stairs, lifting weights, sprint sessions, swim sessions, skills sessions, lonely 10-15km runs on hot concrete streets. This will be the one burning driving reminder that will make us better, stronger and more motivated than ever in 09. That's what i've drawn on myself this morning, to make the pain feel better. I have total faith in our guys and I know they're all hurting with us. Thats what will get me through summer, knowing that they will be doing everything they can for us to train, train and even train some more... to make ammends next year

I would hate to be facing us next season.. I can't wait already.

Amen to that! :thumbsu:

Come off it mate we just pulled off an unexpected win so of course we are going to let the emotion and jubilation out surely you are not begrudging them?. You guys didn't do it last year because you were expected to win, more than likely you would have seen the cats show similar emotions to the hawks this year as the opposition were far superior.

I've just got back from 2 weeks holiday in which I took 6 shirts with me...4 of them Geelong ones, I was that confident of our team and their skills.

Rather than wear 2 shirts and washing them every other day, I was wearing the blue and white hoops with pride!

I was called on it twice, once by a long time friend and Hawks supporter (and to his credit he was a gracious winner), and once by an unknown supporter trying to pay me out. My reply?.....

Unless you're a Hawthorn supporter my team finished better than yours....:D

Small consolation, but truth none the less. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Just dropping into your forum to ask for an opinion and to say bad luck about the GF and looking forward to some cracking games in future with you.

In my humble opinion, I felt Geelong lost this GF around round 11 when they dropped Hawkins. It would have been OK for 2 weeks to take a bit of pressure off him but then return him to the side because he poses a serious threat to any defender just with his size, marking ability and shear talent. Lonergan is just a good VFL player at best, Stokes and Varcoe are average and Geelong did not seem to have a significant target which Hawkins provides. If any team in history could have carried a player it was Geelong 2008 as you had top 2 wrapped up a long time ago. I thought get games into Hawkins who will be a star for 10 years (like Clarko did with Franklin, Roughhead and Lewis from day 1) and he could have made a big difference. I also rate Gamble who is a very good contested mark and kick at goal.

My other query is how did you feel Thompson coached. The reason for my question is because Johnson and Ablett played too much of the game in the middle third of the ground when they do most of their damage in the 50 metre forward arc. Would appreciate your thoughts
