List Mgmt. Welcome Campbell Chesser (Pick 14, 2021 National Draft)

I've not rated the Chesser pick since day dot, but I would absolutely like to see him in a different role and persevered with, at least for the mid term.

Can't be cutting 21yr old first round draft picks going into a rebuild, even when they're a bit underwhelming. As someone mentioned a couple pages back, at least he's stayed on the park and kept injury free for the most part. That's been glossed over a bit, it's a big win this year.

That said I do find Shuey's comments very odd. I'm sure by now most can recall Chessers draft write ups were all about his lack of contested game and tackling. Ergo the draft night melts. So Shuey saying they see him as an inside mid despite this, despite them putting him on the wing gimp role and despite giving him any CBA's at all before subbing/axing him is a real doozie.

Suggests to me the club has no idea what he is or how to get the best out of him. WAFL mid appears to be a solid experiment, but there's absolutely ZERO point to doing that if they don't also see him in that role at AFL level.

If he comes back into the AFL side in a week's time and he's the sub and/or in the gimp role with no CBA'S again..... just fold.

Brad Sheppard taught me a valuable lesson in writing off players early in their careers.
If you had of said on this board 2 years into his career that he'd become of the stingiest/toughest defenders in the league in his prime you'd have been laughed at.

Now this doesn't happen for everyone, but i'm not writing off Chesser 30 games into his career playing in the worst West Coast side of all time.
Agree don't write off players early but blokes with no ticker don't make it at afl level despite having all other positive attributes

I don't bother to read draft write up's. I find them be hysterically over hyped. Comparing every player in the draft to a Hodge, Judd or Ablett. So i didn't know much about him before watching him that first game he played which was against North. And i am no expert on evaluating juvenile footballing horseflesh like WCE Phil. But i could tell he was a spud right away. It just struck me how much of a deer in the headlights he was. Looked afraid of physical contact. Didn't want to compete for the ball. Couldn't tackle any better than a little league player. I remember thinking at the time that maybe he has other attributes that i haven't seen yet that will justify his drafting and compensate like elite pace and kicking. Maybe i will see that in coming games. That obviously didn't happen. My initial impression proved accurate that he was a definate spud and i can't believe we wasted a first rounder on him.

If he still can't get more than 15 touches in WAFL games and/or has no impact on those games in 12 months time (which will be the end of his 4th year on an AFL list) then we just have to call it and delist him. Nobody who is that bad at the end of their 4th year on a list as a midfielder ever goes on to get to the point where they are AFL standard. KP players are worth investing in beyond that point as they might be still developing. But for a midfielder i think the die is cast.

West coast need to de list him
Doubt anyone would take him. He is similar to brander. We need to admit we stuffed it with pick 14 move on and give opportunity to others

4 years is ample

Hope so keeping a spot where others could shine

Err, my point was moreso Chesser is approaching his 4th pre-season this summer and so, it would be stupid to cut him now when we have invested time and patience in him already.

Some players have breakout seasons later (i.e - after their 4th or 5th pre-season), and so with new coaching staff coming in, he might end up finding a new role in the side that suits him and settles him at AFL level.

Totally agree. Lots more people have a similar opinion now!! Amazing that I was banned for not rating him!!!

Ticker is what you need. He has none!!

You weren’t banned for not rating him. Everyone is entitled to their opinion

You don’t rate Chesser, we get it. We don’t need to read it every 5th post in this thread

He should get another season as he was taken so high. It's disappointing for so many people as we're all wanting to see some afl trait emerge - but nothing. He seems to just be around the play but never involved. While seeing players like maric and williams get better every game, you get the feeling we are investing in the wrong player.

I don't believe he is "afraid of physical contact" at all. All of his problems in my mind come down to poor positioning, an inability to read the play and perhaps the role he has had to play at AFL level. I haven't seen him squib many contests unlike Brander for example.

The lack of footy due to injury and COVID shit in Victoria in his junior years has no doubt had a huge impact on this in my opinion.

Sorry, but when a player's "big win" in his favour is his lack of injuries, that's pretty damning.

One more season to show more.

Had a few good moments v Subi in the WAFL but also a number of poor ones.

Keep him going in the WAFl until he shows more.

Funny how other people agree with me now.

Time will tell!!!
Although he's had a bit of it!!
