We smacked them around during the 2002-2004 era

IMG_5911.jpeg

Had their measure from 2002-06, stuffing up our good record against them in 2007 when we wore the WA state jumper as part of heritage round

West Coast smoking Brisbane in Rd 5 2002 is one of the more surprising results from my time watching footy,

We're talking about the reigning premier (One flag into a 3-peat) against a team that lost the last 3 games of the previous season by an average margin of 88.

With the passing of time people say "Brisbane couldn't beat WC during their flag run" which is not true. Over 2001-03 the actual record is 2-2, and in 2001 we are a complete dumpster fire. It's from the 2003 (flag) 5 goals in a half game to 2004 (runner-up) when the record was 3-0 in our favour. From 2005 onward we were the better team.

It's one of those bogeyteam things that everyone has from time to time. For some reason - probably because we had a competitive midfield - we were the only team that could beat Brisbane reliably over that time. After 2004 though the Lions were cooked, and it was going to be years before they'd be competitive again.

However no matter what you might think of COLAs etc, that Brisbane team that won three in a row (and nearly got to four) is probably the best team of the last 30 years. Winning a flag from outside Victoria is I reckon 25% harder than if you're a Melbourne based club, winning three is enormous (FWIW, I reckon our 2018 team would have won more than one had we been an MCG tenant, not one of the top two travellers every year)

That 2002 win broke a 20 game winning streak for the Lions IIRC.

Anyway Elijah Hewett. Hope he'll be injury free this year.

Makes such a difference when you have multiple gun mids.

I am not exactly president of the Tim Kelly fan club, but he looks so much better when he's 3rd or 4th banana.

That 02-06 team was generational. The 18 side we had Yeo and Shuey who could both be game breakers plus some GHPs. We saw in the GF Collingwood had to move the tag off Yeo onto Shuey to try and slow him down which released Yeo to have an impact.

The current midfield has a lot of question marks. Would be great to see Reid and Hewett both playing with Yeo and Kelly.

100%

Surely Hewett assuming his destiny to become Reid's second in command will decide our future.
With Ginbey moving to defence and no Draper, Hewett is vital to our potential to rise up the ladder.
I've never pinned so much on one player before. We desperately need him to stay on the park...
Lets have some faith that the surgery was successful :)

Hopefully there won't be any setbacks, but I'm still very nervous.
