List Mgmt. Welcome Jai Culley (Pick 1, 2022 MSD)

Ginbey who has no midfield craft and was playing his best game in defence moved to mids in Q4.

Culley who plays mid at wafl level got stuck to rot up fwd during the same qtr. Didnt even get a chance to touch it. Mind boggling decision. Likely be a scapegoat now.

Not a forward bunghole.

The only game he played full time mid he was slower then a grandma. He's got a hater in me that he needs to play well to prove me wrong

I have a feeling the club drafted him because he was overhyped. They did not see that he was really an overager who dominated against younger players having returned to TAC who are a year younger than him and not all his opponents have fully grown yet similarly to what Brander did at U16s (he grew faster than his opponents then and was physically dominant because of it).

I call this the Brander syndrome (yep I made up this term) where the team recruits players who dominated against players because they're bodies are fully developed and their opponents haven't physically grown yet and NOT because they're skilful or have game smarts or simply supremely talented. In Reid's case not only he was physically more matured than his opponents at TAC level, but he also had smarts, was very skilful and was supremely talented hence why he was the clear number one pick and we saw him many times fending off AFL level players at will.

Culley playing against players who are a year younger made him look better than he actually is. The way he bullied players at the contest was easier and when they caught up to him due to his lack of speed, he would just shrug them off Harley Reid style and he had more time to dispose of the ball as a result. He may have strength to break tackles at AFL level but not the power and explosive pace to do it on a consistent basis like Reid can since a faster player can easily catch him.

I felt like he looked slow in the WAFL despite playing well.

He is probably suited for some kind of full on inside mid Priddis, Crouch accumulator

His disposal isn't bad, it's probably better than Priddis. He would be too slow to tag especially against quicker explosive players who will easily burn him at the centre bounce or stoppages.

I think he's at his best if the club develops him as a hard full on extracting mid like Priddis and Crouch as Cuzz09 said. (I said this about Ginbey already but he's better playing as a half back now) He would be the perfect extractor, ruthlessly extracting the ball so the likes of Reid, Yeo, Kelly, Hewett, Hall, Chesser and 2024 midfield draftee will get first use and the attention will all be on Reid so he shouldn't have to worry about a tag unless an oppo coach sees through this tactic.

If he gets delisted and doesn't make it then the club has failed to learn it's lesson after the Brander draft in taking players who dominated because of their fully matured bodies at junior levels and not because they're skilled, talented or smart.

Not sure who should've we taken in hindsight but if we took D'Ambrossio then it's likely he would've left the club considering he went from Essendon to Hawthorn. If he doesn't make it then hopefully Maric and Hutch will make it since those two do have the attributes to make it and hopefully we learn from our drafting mistakes. I have a bad feeling he may end up like Clark, West and Colledge who are good at WAFL level but don't have the attributes needed for AFL level but I'm holding out hope though.

His athleticism was a weakness already and then it looks like his knee has put him over the edge. He would need Priddis level of AFL smarts to make it and he doesnt even go close. I'm sure he will make a top class VFL player but way too easily exploited at AFL level.

Freo were actively exploiting him on Serong. The fact a club is actively trying to go through a player you are supposedly tagging says it all really.

He was a mid-season pick that hasnt really worked out, which is fine. Its often a weak player pool with an occasional nugget every few years.

It's funny because this board would have imploded if we had selected D'Ambrosio over Culley but he has turned out far the better player.

Agree, and its just revisionist that D'Ambrosio was the correct pick in hindsight. Turns out he was probably the only good pick from that draft. The MSD is just a massive lottery.

Round one

1. West Coast Eagles — Jai Culley (Dandenong Stingrays)
2. North Melbourne — Kallan Dawson (Williamstown VFL)
3. Essendon — Massimo D’Ambrosio (Western Jets)
4. Adelaide Crows — Brett Turner (Glenelg)
5. GWS Giants — Wade Derksen (Peel Thunder)
6. Hawthorn — Max Ramsden (Sandringham Dragons)
7. Gold Coast Suns — Oskar Faulkhead (Bendigo Pioneers)
8. Port Adelaide — Brynn Teakle (East Fremantle)
9. Collingwood — Josh Carmichael (West Adelaide)
10. Richmond — Jacob Bauer (North Adelaide)
11. Sydney Swans — Hugo Hall-Kahan (Sandringham Dragons)
12. Geelong Cats — Zane Williams (Woodville-West Torrens)
13. Carlton — Sam Durdin (Glenelg)
14. St Kilda — Pass
15. Fremantle — Sebit Kuek (East Perth)

Round two

16. West Coast Eagles — Pass
17. North Melbourne — Pass
18. Essendon — Jye Menzie (South Adelaide)
19. Adelaide Crows — Pass
20. Hawthorn — James Blanck (Box Hill Hawks)
21. Collingwood — Pass
22. Carlton — Will Hayes (Carlton VFL)
23. Fremantle — Pass

To be fair to our recruiters, Culley is probably the second best pick there. He and the club were unlucky when he did his knee.

D'Ambrosio got traded to the hawks too.
i'd imagine if he stayed at essendon he may have been delisted by now.

Teakle would have 30 + games for us by now.

It’s the mid season draft. Massive shoulder shrug territory
Yeah this - MSD is not the national draft, people are getting hellbent on the no. 1 label.

It's an opportunity to rookie someone who wasn't selected in either the national draft or rookie draft. It's at best the 3rd chance for these kids. Liklihood of success is low.

Last week made clear that Culley is no AFL level inside mid, he's too slow. At best he might find a place in the forward line, he can kick goals - but IMO there's probably a few ahead of him in that position.

I think Culley has skill and class, he just needs to get his hands on the ball more frequently to show it.

What he does with the ball is better than most on our team, just seems like he can't get it, possibly also not helped by us not having a genuine ruckman.

Another one of our players who needs coaching on positional sense in terms of covering for his lack of speed and finding the ball.

Fingers crossed, the incoming coach can sort it out if he is retained.

Not a speedster but being out of the game so long with a real injury presents as a young player who will take a while to get a sense of the game returning. This make any player look slower.

Exactly. he's only been on the list since mid 2022 and missed a year due to that ACL.

i think based on wafl performance and what hes shown at AFL level, its worth extending his contract at least another year.

Definitely too early to delist yet. But seems up against it in terms of being a full time mid. A Zurhaar/Stringer type HFF would be a good outcome (has much better skills than Zurhaar)

I reckon that ACL couldn't have been at a worse time for him. He'd be best 22 or at least not even in the 'consider delisting' conversation if that didn't happen. I haven't been this disappointed in the possibility of a player being delisted in a long, long, long time. I personally don't see what Hutchinson brings at all and would've happily cut him after 6 months if I were in charge.
