Afl players in general do a lot of boxing for fitness in their programs.
Boxing for fitness is not boxing (I've done both) as it doesnt usually teach movement and defenses. Ryan showed alright timing with his punches and slips, but his footwork was shithouse. Other bloke's was worse though. For what it's worth, my timing and footwork was also shit when I used to do it.

Increased aerobic fitness really is more a secondary side effect of boxing when it comes to AFL.

AFL players box as it helps with injury prevention and improves physicality/combativeness, which is what coaches are seeking.

When coaches say bring your mouth guard on Monday, it’s not for boxercise classes to improve fitness.

Sounds like something someone who has never boxed would say .

Even just skipping and hitting the pads is aerobically intensive .

Great fitness without all the lower body impact of running .

Mouth guard Monday is punishment for being soft . Brander needed some of that treatment

Given the problems in sport with concussion, boxing should really be on it's last legs given the high likelihood of repeated concussions.

It's hard enough to deal with in sports where it's a by-product of the game, a sport where it's a direct result of the actual requirements of the sport has to be something else.

(Mind you, I think the relevant medical experts have been calling for boxing to be banned for decades, so what do I know?)

Most of the legal issues with concussion deal with a sporting organisation's "duty of care" to its players. Boxing isn't structured that way - if you're Boxy McBoxface who comes down with concussion related illness later in life, who are you gonna sue? Not like you can sue your opponents for hitting you too hard in the head...

Legal issues aside, at some point someone has to step in and say "we can't continue with something that has such a high risk of long term injury". Contact sports are wrestling with how to manage concussion, but there's no way boxing can deal with it - it's too ingrained in the sport, the "knockout" blow is the pinnacle of the sport.

If boxing wasn't so high profile, it would probably have been banned years ago along with horse and dog racing - so called "sports*" where there's an influential industry backing them with massive financial clout (see: gambling). We can't even get gambling ads banned in this country, no chance of more action due to government spinelessness.

*I don't rate any form of animal racing as a sport, and I'm barely accepting boxing if you force me.
