List Mgmt. Welcome Tim Kelly (Traded in 2019 Megatrade)

In that last game Dwayne I think referred to Tim Kelly as having been ‘a good pickup for them’, which stood out as I think that’s the first time I’ve heard someone arrive at and concede that in the footy media. It’s derwayne, I know, but shows we’ve kind of moved past the initial spotlight and unflattering verdicts on the Tim Kelly trade. Past is past kind of thing.

Kelly has been a great pick up. He’s harshly judged due to the highly publicised trade. But one things for sure, he’s been available and our best mid over that time. Yeo, Shuey and Naitanui have all been MIA. It’s been, Stop Kelly and pretty much beat west coasts midfield.
the problem is that its quite easy to stop Kelly. Tag him with someone half decent and he is gone

Kelly was brought in a cream on top player and I guess his career at the Eagles probably amplifies it. Has been good but has hardly looked as damaging as he was at the cattery plying as the third/fourth mid. You just can’t rely him to carry a crappy side on his back like a Yeo or even Shuey. We will likely never see that 18/19 again ever again as he will be either gone by the time our teams starts to look semi decent or he’d be in his last couple seasons

If Yeo stays fit and firing and doesn't leave the club, Hewitt gets a good run of senior games once fit, Ginbey continues to gain confidence and improves his game with another preseason and becomes the teams primary extractor handballing it to receivers, Reid starts to reach his top form as THE top player in the league, Chesser continues to rise up in gaining more experience and confidence with his body and game, Culley turns out to be a solid player in the Redden mold and our 2024 midfield draftee is AFL ready in his first season and Flynn can consistently feed our mids then I could see Kelly will at least start to turn back into vintage 18/19 Kelly.

The club and coaches would have to identify that Kelly is someone who relies on the midfield winning the ball and places himself positions ahead of the ball where he is most damaging and can also be a genuine goal scoring threat by running to dangerous positions ahead of the ball. During the clubs down seasons, he was asked to be the main mid and pretty much play a more contested style game in extracting the ball which is not his strongest skill set. He is at his best if he has space and can dispose of the ball with less pressure.

If things go well with our new main mids developing well and the club gets it right in making Kelly be a receiver and get to dangerous spaces ahead of the ball then I can see Kelly return to the hype the club's fans expected when he moved over from Geelong. Despite his age, he's not one of those players who relies on pace and explosiveness so he can play a bit longer.

The end of Kelly’s 6 year deal is quietly and quickly coming to an end at the end of next year.

I’m starting to think about what comes next for Kelly after his deal expires. He’ll be 31 when it comes to an end on average of 900k per year, but my understanding is his deal was backended and he’s on considerably more in 2024-25.

Little doubt we will extend him beyond 2025, just a question of how long and how much.

I'd let him walk like Yeo and see what compensation pick we get. I know we won't do that but we should.

He’s not a free agent, and given his personal circumstances, don’t think he would entertain a move.

Puts us in a strong position when negotiating. Will be interesting to see how navigate the deal given those things. Think it’s fair to say TK has been a good servant of the club in his 6 years, even if he hasn’t quite lit it up in the way suporters hoped.

We definitely should not.

Additionally I should add as TK's sponsor this year - I hope you get over your hip issue soon you smooth moving footballing demigod!

Would we have picked Warner (pick 39) if we kept our picks?

Given nearly every other team that actually had picks in that draft passed him over, some 2,3 and 4 times (Sydney themselves picked 3 guys before him) I find it so bizarre that this always comes up as some big miss just for us

Kelly will have a good game once a month. Even when he picks up 30 touches he is such a horrible ball user it makes it useless.

We paid too much for Kelly at the time and even more looking back.

He doesn't seem like a leader around the club and given his age, he won't play another final for us, so I wouldn't be hugely disappointed if he could find some value trading him somewhere.
