Whilst they have had injuries this year i wouldnt really call them injury prone

Hopper missed a chunk this year due to his 2 x knee surgery's

But if you are to look at their games they have both played 114 games
Tim Taranto
2017 - 14 games (debut year as )
2018 - 23 games
2019 - 26 games (B & F in GF year)
2020 - 11 games (17 game season Contact shoulder injury)
2021 - 24 games
2022 - 16 games

Jacob Hopper
2016 - 10 games
2017 - 13 games
2018 - 21 games
2019 - 23 games
2020 - 17 games (17 game season Contact shoulder injury)
2021 - 23 games 7 games

Hoppers 1st and 2nd year were more development years and he was played sparingly similar to most young mids and its only 2022 where he has had the knee injury thats effected his games

Also need to keep in mind that both these boys have pretty much walked into a midfield stacked with top end mids the like never seen before

Hopper missed 7 games in 4 seasons before 2022. Before that he was in his first 2 seasons and I don’t think he was an automatic selection.

Taranto has missed I think 13 games in his 6 season career through injury, including 2022.

I am not across what their 2022 injuries were but prior to that you wouldn’t have called either of them injury prone.

Taranto plays forward a lot. Their recent injuries are still a slight concern for me.

There is always an injury risk with any player or draftee (Sonsie and Banks both came in injured), but it’s not like this history is littered with injuries unlike Prestia and Lynch when they arrived.

Besides neither will be coming to the club injured considering they both played out the season (bar Taranto's concussion). Lynch and Prestia came to us injured and missed chunks of their first preseason.

The biggest issues is clubs use the off season to build hype to sell memberships. They get lost in the process of doing what is best for the team in short term with what is best for their future.

It shows how stupid the footballing world is that they are questioning how it possible for Richmond to acquire both Tarranto and Hopper. Every decision has a consequence. In 2018 when we picked up Lynch that domino effect led to the departure of Butler and Conca. There wasn't room for two guys to be on 300k a season especially given the depth in their positions.

In 2020 when Higgins departed, we could have held him to his contract and tried to convince him that he is young player and the opportunity will come but we settled for what was a fair deal based on output at that stage. That decision alone freed up another 300k we otherwise wouldn't have had plus the draft pick.

We basically decided to trade out of the 2020 draft while trading for no established talent which meant no real incoming of talent for that season but meant a bigger draft hand for 2021. In the same period we allowed Chol and CCJ to leave which resulted in a better draft hand for which we get to use the key piece of that deal in this up coming trade and draft period. We could and fought harder to keep those guys but in doing so would have meant given up the cap space that Taranto and Hopper will eat up.

No one bats an eye lid if Higgins, Chol, CCJ and Butler were on 300-350k a season but Taranto and Hopper on 700-750k all of a sudden becomes an issue. The 200k gap is the difference in what Riewoldt and Cotchin chose to take.

Also funnily enough I don't hear complaints about Richmond being poached of these players or our coaches for that matter. Nor do I care as it's how the industry works but the hypocrisy especially by the media is a joke.

Very fair. And yep, no need to discuss political systems on a sports forum. I didn’t intend to make it about that.

Ignore that I said “socialists” it’s obviously a very loaded term.

What I mean is there’s an idea permeating society at the moment…. And it’s reared it’s ugly head in the past. The idea that the outcome ought to be even as evidence that things are “fair”. It’s not true.

And if we don’t call out people like Kane who make statements like this, then you simply risk more and more people following suit. Because that’s also what traditionally happens.

Look at what Richmond and Geelong have done on and off the field to attract players. Every club is free to do the same.

Look at what players have gone to GWS from other clubs.

Look at average ladder position over the last decade.

Look at the salary cap squeeze they’ve got.

Look at Collingwood losing players to Footscray in a similar squeeze and then in a prelim final the following year.

It’s just so lazy to have a sook “oh it’s a big club raiding a poor club”. It’s envy.

Just like it’s lazy to assume anyone/anything who got anywhere had some secret advantage or privilege and it’s the only reason why anything happens.
