Running machine takes out Combine 2km trial
Callum Twomey October 6, 2017 3:39 PM

DYLAN Moore has ended an impressive week at the NAB AFL Draft Combine by taking out the 2km time trial on the final day of testing.

The Eastern Ranges midfielder, who was named an All Australian after an impressive under-18 carnival for Vic Metro, ran 6:09 minutes to narrowly pip Vic Country midfielder Lochie O'Brien, who ran 6:12.

Moore's win follows his excellent effort in Thursday's Yo-Yo test, when he finished second behind Andrew Brayshaw with a score of level 22.3.

Moore's aerobic base was already well-known heading into the week of athletic testing at Etihad Stadium, but his seamless run was a reminder of his capacity to play out games when others tire, which he has shown across a consistent season.

At 175cm Moore is at the smaller end, but his goalkicking craft when he pushes forward and neat skills, combined with his athleticism, means his most likely draft range is somewhere in the second round.

Geelong Falcons small forward Gryan Miers, less than two weeks after starring in his side's TAC Cup premiership with seven goals in the Grand Final, finished third overall after a 6:13 run.

Brayshaw backed up his Yo-Yo win by finishing fourth overall in the 2km time trial (6:14).

It was the first time the AFL has conducted a 2km time trial at the combine, after it replaced the 3km time trial, which has generally concluded testing in recent years.

AFL clubs tend to prefer to hold 2km time trials ahead of the longer distance, with an elite time considered to be around the six-minute mark. Any time under six minutes is restricted to the absolute top-end players, while a time under 6:30 is viewed as a strong run.

AFL draft 2017: Dylan Moore a gun pocket rocket that’s likely to be taken inside top 30 of draft

It is not difficult to see why, given he weighs just 66kg and stands at 176cm and took out the 2km time trial in 6.09 minutes at October’s national draft comb
In 2014, he was the best junior steeplechaser in Victoria and in 2016 he won a 1600m even at the Stawell Gift.

Before the Wantirna local received an invitation to join Eastern Ranges midway through 2016 on the back of several standout performances for Caulfield Grammar, a professional football career appeared to be nothing more than a pipe-dream.

“Too small” was the label from recruiters. But never was he too slow or not nimble enough to compete with the best players in his age group. It just took scouts some time to realise it.

Moore never lost faith in himself. Now he’s a top-30 prospect.

And the same recruiters who once discounted him have since seen past his lightly built frame.

“I’ve grown 30cm in five years and I’ve always been small,” Moore told foxfooty.com.au.

“I am more contested now than that outside little goalsneak. Logically and practically, I think I would be a small forward at the start of my career but then I would like to end up as a midfielder. Hopefully I end up playing a role like Lachie Neale.”

But like all talented teenagers, Moore needed a little nudge. And it came from Ranges talent manager Len Villani.

“We grabbed ‘Moorey’ at the end of last year and told him: ‘This is fair dinkum’ mate, this isn’t just filling gaps and biding time so you can play a little bit at Caulfield Grammar and a few TAC Cup games if you’re lucky’,” Villani told foxfooty.com.au.

“We said ‘why can’t you try to have a cracking pre-season, set yourself up, see how far you can take yourself and who knows? Knock down the door in the first five or six weeks of the year, get yourself into a Metro program and take the opportunity from there’.”

Moore did just that, averaging 23 disposals per game for Vic Metro en route to being named in the forward pocket in the Under 18 All-Australian team after the national carnival.

“I think he just needed to hear that and have some assurance around that,” Villani continued.

“I think once we thought we made him realise that this is actually a real opportunity here to make of something of it, that gave him that little kick along.

“I think Moorey’s hit the sweet spot in terms of he’s done enough, turned up, performed and has continued to show improvement.”

Before football took over, Moore’s days as an elite junior athlete saw him run in the same relay team as 2017 Rising Star Andrew McGrath.

While completing his studies this year, he’s kept a keen eye on his “close mate” making an immediate impact for Essendon as a small defender. And according to Moore, there is no reason why he can’t follow in McGrath’s footsteps, albeit as a crumbing forward, in 2018.

“I am a pretty high achiever school and footy-wise,” Moore said.

“I want to be playing AFL next year. I’d love to make an impact. You see rookies these days and want to follow and do that.

“I’m a very impatient person. I want to be knocking on the doors early.”

When quizzed on his supposed weaknesses, Moore declared that any shortcomings he currently has will be ironed out.

“I just don’t want to have any weaknesses,” he said.

“If anything my contested marking or one-on-one marking isn’t great. I could improve my body positioning. I only way 66kg but if I can get to 74kg and grow a few more centimetres from 176, I will be a better player. Dad is 182cm.”

If you think Moore is being a touch too ambitious, think again.

“He’s a single handicap golfer, Stawell Gift middle distance winner and would not have been on one magnet board this time last year,” Villani conceded.

“The appeal for Moorey, and his point of difference, is that he’s everything you need and more for a small. He’s an elite endurance runner, his repeat speed is exceptional — he’s already running AFL-like numbers now on his GPS stuff — his workrate is enormous, he’s super competitive, he’s very clean, his hands are elite inside the contest, he kicks the ball very well and he just keeps turning up — and you can’t ignore that.

“That spirit and drive will carry him a long way in the modern-day game. Every barrier that’s been put up in front of this kid, he’s deadset bashed the door down and gone through.”

Moore has also lent on Collingwood ball-winner Tom Phillips since the Magpie was drafted at the end of 2015.

Phillips’ younger brother Ed — who was drafted to St Kilda this time last year — became friends with Moore in their time at Caulfield Grammar, where Moore won the First XVIII’s best and fairest this season.

“It’s been tough this year,” Moore said of trying to combine his studies and sport.

“Tom Phillips gave me some good advice. He said to me that when you’re at school just 100 per cent focus on school and don’t think about footy. But when you’re at footy just get the best out of your time there as well.

“He also said to use footy as a release from school. I got told that through term two.

“I love Gary Ablett and he does the basics better than anyone. That’s what I try to do well.

“I don’t want to give an AFL club an excuse not to pick me up.”

Strange that he was rated 12th but dropped so far. Hopefully the calls of us getting the biggest steal are accurate.

He will need to put on some beef and hopefully grow a few centimetres as well.

Cautiously optimistic about this choice but given it was a pick in the 60s we don’t have much to lose.
