Very funny post!

My mate Andy rang me today and asked “hey, Davo, what was the name of the player you were happy would never play for the Hawks?”

Ginnivan just plays up to the crowd, nothing more to his game.

.

There’s rarely anything more to your posting on here either - so you should probably be empathetic to those you think offer very little.

Will be expecting to see a young 2YO horse called GINNIVAN running at Ladbrokes Sandown not far from Waverley in 2024.

Would have required a first round pick 12 months ago when he kicked 40 goals as a 19 year old.

Still only 20 with proven big game ability and a lot of upside.

Seems immature off field and has plenty of areas in his game he needs to improve, especially defensively, but we have bought low after a disappointing year. Good get for a side that struggles to kick goals

Ginni. My man.

Cannot wait to see what he can do. He has got that X-factor about him that could make him great - if he can apply himself and learn the ropes off the likes of Bruest, Moorey - he could be amazing and there will be many wanting to wear his jumper.

Let’s hope plenty of positive on-field stories are what’s talked about next year - go well son.

Love having another campaigner in the team. Let's hope it's the Toby Greene type and not a Jack Stringer type

Let's hope Sammy has enough pull to rein him right in if need be.

With Ginni and the other forward additions I can't wait for 2024 to start

I feel he will be a polarising player for a few more years until he matures. He will have good days and he will also have shockers. It’s finding a more consistent output from him that will be important. He definitely has goal scoring nous

I love that he is a bit of a rascal. Just needs to learn the limits he can push off field whilst retaining his shithousery behaviour on field which I am going to enjoy watching.

33 goals that season came from marks or making defenders look like witches hats.

He's a gun
Where'd you pull 33 from?

I'm doing a quick check and up until Round 4 he's already got 3/40 directly from free kicks. Doesn't bode well.

Disgusted by this. Once the umpires caught on to his ducking for frees his goals per game (and usefulness to Collingwood) dried right up. When up the ground he just hacks the ball forward and is an absolute liability. No wonder they were happy to ship him off. Not to mention the Mcstay video...

We have bought an absolute dud here and I'm filthy about it. With the future picks we will be slipping back a minimum of 10 spots in the draft in the 2nd and 4th rounds, and have slipped back 6 spots in this years 2nd round. How is this a good pick up?

The controversy around Ginnivan and the rule change came in in Round 18, 2022. It was that game, against Adelaide, where there were complaints and controversy he was being umpired differently because he got several genuine high tackles that were not paid after his ducking had been called out.

Up to that game, he had kicked 28 goals in 14 games at 2 goals per game.

His scoring did slow after that, kicking 12 goals in the next 9 games at 1.3 per game.

The thing is, 1.3 goals per game is still good for a 19 year old small forward (particularly as it included finals). It's way above Brockman and Butler for example.

He also managed to kick 3 goals in the Semi final, 3 goals against Carlton in that high pressure final round game that knocked them out of finals and 3 goals in a 1 goal win against Port. All 3 of those games came in the 9 games after the rule change, where he couldn't buy a high free.

Don't get me wrong - he has weaknesses - but the narrative that he can only kick goals from high frees is way overblown. If Butler had 3 x 3 goals in high pressure/finals games, we'd all be wetting ourselves with excitement.

House him with Breust between now and time he retires...

I know we would say this (i.e. to pair up with Breust) for any small forward coming in but it's surprising how similar their strengths and weaknesses are.

Ginnivan is not very athletic - not quick, super strong and doesn't have a huge leap. Well, neither does Breust.

Ginnivan is great at reading the play, being at the drop of the ball, knows where the goals are can kick goals with both feet. Sound familiar?

Breust's goal accuracy is a staggering 68% Well, Ginnivan's is 66% (but can kick a longer goal than Breust).

Not saying he will be anywhere near the player Breust is (he won't) but they have very similar attributes and I'm sure Breust could teach him more about running patterns, crumbing timing/technique, etc.

(Fair to say their personalities are a bit different though ;) )
