They rarely select genuine wingers, let alone 2 of them. Probably only one of them make it.

Gulden isn't a wingman. If he makes the team it will be as a HFF despite him being a midfielder predominantly.

Josh Daicos certainly is a wingman though.

I reckon Butters and Rozee are just as likely to be the HFF's or on the bench too.

He’s already the second best player at the club. His constant rate of improvement - not only year on year but within each of the three seasons he has played - has been remarkable. Even this year, he has only really emerged as a full 4 quarter beast in the latter part of the season. What he can do with another pre season (let alone several) is really exciting. His trajectory is a top 5 player in the competition. He has every other tool required to achieve it once his fitness gets there, which it will because he leaves no stone unturned. Attitude wise he is the embodiment of his coach

I don't have the words tbh.

50 games.

50 bloody games from Pooyong through 3 VFL games to a performance that is equal to any current mid in the comp.

I saw Jai yesterday and was reminded of Ben Cousins in full unstoppable "beast" mode.

He's that good and hasn't reached his full potential yet.

And that's even scarier.

Future Brownlow Medalist in waiting if he gains consistency.

What an absolute pleasure to watch this man do his stuff.

Ok let’s cut the crap and stop pandering to the media flogs - Duke has to be in strong contention for AA team (not squad) selection.

I challenge anyone to explain to me why his performance year to date is inferior to the other mids that we seem to anoint with AA selection by default.

Extraordinary what he has achieved in only 50 games - is not a single other mid in the comp that I would take over him at the moment

I wonder if not for COVID where he would have gone in the national draft top 5 top 3 .

An extra thing I like about him is how driven and competitive he is. Heard Sam M say a couple of times how hard he works on adding new things to his game. Apparently he worked really hard in the off season to improve his overhead marking - and he has become super strong in that area.

I think one criticism he might have got last year was his kicking could be a bit inconsistent or he just roosted it too much. He has cleaned that up, and his kicking and decision making is becoming a real weapon. Love him.

Like to see him rest forward more in rotation when we build a midfield that doesn’t need him every time.

When an iron will to succeed meets talent, you get Jai Newcombe.

There's no ceiling for him, people have talked about it being his great limiter on this forum. But the man has it all – dancing feet and power to escape congestion, powerful marking, kicking and running, incredible skills that get better each month. An insanely high football IQ to see everything unfolding and know how to impact it best.

No coincidence that this game was his 50th, it takes that long, even for Jai.

Exposed form says that he won't rest until he's at the end of his career, and has been the best player in the competition for a period of time.

It's the path he's been on since his first game. Set a goal, did it extremely well (tackled so often the commentators can't get it out of their minds, and think that's the cornerstone of his game). He is Sam Mitchell like in his desire be the best at everything he does.

Fast emerging as a leader alongside Will Day. They talk through their actions, and Jai made sure that his lifted us over the line this week.

On the Foxtel first crack show they said they see a young Martin in him.

I get annoyed by other clubs constantly landing father sons or academy kids in the top 5, but have to accept the enormous luck in Newcombe landing under Sam’s nose at Box Hill after the covid draft. He’s likely to be better than most number 1 draft picks. Biggest steal of the decade

I keep seeing reference that he is on track to break the record for most broken tackles in a season, but never seen any reference to numbers. Anyone have any info or source to such numbers?
Unfortunately there's no way to know unless Champion Data choose to share it on a whim. Dustin Martin has the record currently, with 68 - that was set in 2017 but it has only been tracked since 2011.
