Not the same player types but is this a rerun of 2010 where Izzy came from VFL and Puopolo from sanfl as slightly more mature?

games in 2011: Izzy 16 poppy 20

having said that Izzy and poppy were a touch older but in 2022?
Yeah I was saying the same thing to my dad this afternoon.

A genuine future star, buckle up

sounds like some unbelievable work done by the hawthorn coaches to find this bloke under the radar
He came to box hill from Gippsland power to fill in as depth in a practice match because they were short on numbers. He literally just fell in our lap. We were good enough to keep in touch and bring him to box hill though.

You always need some luck, also sounds like the script of a new hawks hero

The Hawthorn hype machine around young Jai would reflect that we think he's a gem. Sam Mitchell is an old school "withhold praise, find the point of improvement in everyone" type of guy and he's full of positivity for young Jai. Great indicator.

An appropriate player comparison may be Richmonds Jack Graham. Was a man child at 19 as a bull midfielder with occasional burst of speed. Now a 2 time premiership player.

His stats on the weekend were 22 disposals, 5 tackles and 2 goals. Very similar to Jai's averages for Box Hill this season.

If you saw an 18 year old doing those things in the TAC cup/nationals, you'd think he would go top 5.
When a 19 year old does it against men, and without a proper conditioning regime, I am equally impressed.

I can't see him being anything less than a success.
JJJ - Jai, Jimmy and JOM in the middle next year!
JJJJ, and Jason ;)

Big difference is graham is an endurance beast. Apparently the best power runner at Richmond. He is a bit of a freak when you watch him closely. He will be in the BP next minute he will be on screen in the middle, then finally in the F50 in the final phase. Not sure newcombe has this type of aerobic capacity or ever will

Perhaps not, but who knows? Jai hasn't been involved in an elite program yet. He may surprise us a little.

Regardless, there are definitely some similarities. I'd happily take the output for Jai that we've seen from Graham so far.

Excited to see him play with tempered expectations.

Without heaping pressure on him, I think the recruitment of Newcombe is indicative of the direction we want to go. We've played long a fiar bit of soft footy this year and this is a guy who is as tough and relentless as it gets from start to finish.

I won't be surprised if in the national draft we pick someone who is a tough bastard rather than flashy.
