SDK was a reason they didn't concede many inside 50s? C'mon. The score conceded by Geelong is beside the point, the ball got there 10% less than the next best side and 50% less than the worst side. He had a very easy job.

All that said - Team performance doesn't really come into it, finals don't come into it. Here's the list of winners and where their teams placed since 2000.

I get that it's a media award and all but for mine the justification for having SDK ahead of Newc was little more than a judgment on Newc for his age and where he was drafted.
SDK is slightly older than Newc so I don’t think age played much part.

SDK did a really good job freeing up their more offensive defenders and allowed them to play a more aggressive style than previously. Where if they tried to take the game on it all came apart.

I do agree it’s a media award personally I feel it means almost nothing in the grand scheme of things. Just that it’s a strong top 4 (Martin included). And it really only matters where players are at the end of their career not the start.

Just picture for a minute John Smith, a 21 year old midfielder drafted pick 4 a few years back. Stands at 187cm, is powerful, bursts out of stoppage, damaging by foot and surprisingly good overhead. Imagine how the media would fawn over such a player with this output:

You'd almost think we have a young bull who's gonna be a dominant midfielder for a long time

Getting a top twenty player in the league via the MSD.

That's the ultimate value pick up!
"Nobody has exploited Free Agency as well as the Hawks.
They've taken O'Meara, Wingard, Mitchell and now Jai Newcombe.
The AFL must investigate."

We are the only club to sell the farm while exploiting Free Agency to the fullest.

You pick up McKercher, you can put Newc and Macdonald forward a bit more, you can try Mackenzie out of the backline, you let Ward and Day have a bit more run on the wings. He can be the full time mid that keeps things ticking - we've got flexibility elsewhere IMO.
Taking this here to keep it thread-relevent, but Newcombe resting as a deep forward is the next step in his progression. His strength overhead, gut running, and kicking skill make him a deadly option to float deep and drag a midfielder deep. Right now he's needed to get the ball inside 50, but rotating with Moore or CMac might add another threat forward that we clearly deserately need.

Took a ripper mark inside 50 today. Not the first time he’s done that. Definitely has it in him to play forward of the ball.

Has been showing a lot more of his inside work these last few weeks. Showing how versatile he is.

Would love to see him kick the ball a bit more though. He’s a ripper kick. Has had 25 kicks and 66 handballs over the last 3 games.

How was his game yesterday? Didn't get to watch and can't emotionally sit through the replay.

Stat line looks quite impressive, but his 77 Supercoach points have let me down considering how solid he's been this year as a point of difference selection.

Want to see him kicking the footy a bit more!

Miskicked his first two kicks which probably didn’t help his score.

Did a lot of good work inside the contest. And his mark and goal were really good.

Overall despite his stat line I didn’t think he had the greatest game with ball in hand. Still good that he stuck at it and ended up with 30 disposals and still in our best 5-6 on the ground.

As for watching the game. Watch until Lewis puts us 36 points up and imagine that’s the end of the game. As it’s great viewing up to that point.
