My point was more around the comment that you can't have 2 full time wings. Even with Gulden the current team doesn't have 2 full time wings. There's enough room for 1 wing, 1 hybrid wing - you don't need to chuck someone like Merrett in there who has the most CBAs in his team by a fairly significant margin.

How is the AA selection committee going to say with a straight face that Merrett belongs out on a wing I wonder?

If the position he plays and wing were somehow directly interchangeable, we'd have seen him absolutely breaking games open out there.

Isaac Smith was arguably the best wingman in the competition with us for years without even looking like he'd win a center clearance. Ditto for Brad Hill. But they were dominant players in a hell of a lot of games at Hawthorn, because it's a specialist role.

Gulden playing wing 60 percent of the time at the Swines re-enforces/strengthens that idea. The guy is a freak level talent - he's not being hidden out there because he can't win his own ball or fit into the rotations.

If Mass doesn't get selected this is approaching Mooney over Franklin in 2007 level dumb imo.

Seems tough to argue the wing for a guy who doesn't actually show that he's capable of having significant impact on games out there in 2024.

Had the pleasure of sitting on the Massimo D'Ambrosio wing v the Blues and Tigers and was in awe of his ability to provide a conduit between HB and HF with his 30-40 metre kicks to a target, moving or not. Icing on the cake is his goals with a shimmy thrown in.
10 of those linking kicks are worth their weight in gold and are better than 30 possessions when determining an AA wingman. Sometimes I'd rather he didn't go when it's his turn, he's too valuable to Sam's gameplan to get crunched.

Picking one of the best clearance players in the comp on the wing just because he has good foot skills shows why the AA is a joke. These people won’t give you any better football insights then you will get on here

TBH, Freo's midfield is the most over-rated in the AFL, by a mile.
Cheap out the back possessions to both Brayshaw and Serong pad their stats every week.
The only really damaging player they have in there is Young

I'd argue if the AA Selectors cannot find a spot for Nick Daicos in the midfield they should be launched into the Sun. First picked on-baller. That being said.

Why was Gawn selected? Why select McGovern who didn't get 30 touches once and only scored 1 goal. Why didn't they just put another midfielder in there that had a better season than them?

As David King said on 360 the other night, unless every single pick on the side is a player playing that position you might as well just have a "top 25".

Daicos is not a wingman, he probably deserved a spot in the AA team but not at the expense of a genuine winger.
