The only way I’ll be semi-ok with losing Burton is if we manage to land all 3 of Scully, Wingard and Scrimshaw.

I feel he’ll have a Sicily-like breakout year in either 2019 or 2020 and just become a genuine gun.

Ryan's a nice player.....but he'll never mark the ball like Sicily, never back in to packs/run through them/be a badass like Sicily, never kick as well as Sicily....
We probably can get by with one player of the like mold and his name is Sicily.

Wasn’t suggesting he’d be the same player as Sicily. Just that he’d have a breakout year like Sicily had.

Yep - realise that's what you were saying.:thumbsu:
Just picturing what a player like Ryan improves on so dramatically as to have a 'breakout' season different to his glimpses in his first year and smidges this year?
He reads it nicely already, pretty good off the deck, ok with handball. Think his greatest talent is kicking, and for me his best chance of becoming 'GREAT' is a move forward and showing he has nowse and instinct to be a nice hit up player or someone who doubles back and marks it on the run, before dead eye dicking some consistent goals.
Maybe a tall Judge kinda player.

He aint no midfielder.
He's no beast Key position player.
Nice flanker, and will watch with hope if he stays on our list and with interest if he goes to Port.

He can already kick like Sicily, booming boot on him.

He has just as much ability as Sic, don't kid yourself just because it looks like he'll leave. He could well end up a Yeo type.

Nah, you've got a hard on for certain players and insist on convincing everyone else of your rating.
Ryan's not 50% the quality by foot, he can go long and decently low but doesn't kick across his body to pick out a teammate through a zone defense like Siss, or have nearly the same creativity.
Haven't 'convinced' myself of anything since it's looked possible Burto will leave, have given the same opinion on him for 12 months.

Sicily at the same age wasn't even like Sicily is now. Burton could just as easily have a breakout season in 2019 or 2020. He could also not - there's no guarantees. But there's plenty to suggest he will.

To get Wingard, we're losing Pick 15 this year.

The question to consider is what do you rate higher, Burton, or our first round pick in 2019. Because that's the other part of the deal, one of those things.

It is not as simple as that. We do not throw huge coin at players but we may want to target a free agent next year. If we do and their club matches, without a first round pick, we are hamstrung in our dealings next year.

If Wingard is so toxic, pick 15 to get him out of there, rather than a year toxifying the place, and THEN a first round pick.

Pick 15 and TOB at the most.

Port's position is NOT strong in this!

Burton is a very promising young player, but he's not a young star. Does he have the tools and potential to get there? Yes. Is he a lock to get there? No.

I would definitely prefer to keep Ryan, we don't have a plethora of young quality players - but if Ryan is what we need to give up to facilitate a deal for Wingard (and we can bring in Scully and Scrimshaw) then I'm ok with it.

Yeo goes harder than almost anyone, Burton is yet to show he has any of that kind of endeavor in his game. And he will need to if he wants to become a midfielder.

Yeo is also an exception athlete which is again something that Burton doesn't have (not to say that he's not a good athlete in his own right, but Yeo is a level above).

I just don't see that comparison at this stage.

Burton needs to stay, Cripps has bared his balls in his interview, admitting that Chad is going next year anyway. Give Port 1st rounder this year and 2nd rounder next year and play russian roulette until 8:28pm Wednesday, what are we losing? We can reneg at the last minute in a worst case scenario...

Is Scrimshaw anywhere near the level of Burto? The bevy of evidence would suggest not, risky ploy.

Depends on who you ask I guess.
Seems a moneyball type situation all based on potential.
Is the cub extracting maximum value for Burton with the "star" tag knowing they have a similar player coming in on less $$$ with expected similar out put in Scrimshaw?

I've come to accept that the HFC may not rate Burton as highly as it's supporters - myself included.

In my opinion, if Burto would just demand the ball, smash a few packs and clunk some good marks instead of double-fisting over the line, we wouldn't be even thinking about trading him.

Maybe it's just me, but his body language says laconic rather than hungry.

There's no doubt that he has the physical and footy skills to be awesome across the half back line.

Its obvious that Clarko does not want him... maybe at the exit meetings we didn't have as much clarity with regard to acquisitions but its a pretty shit sandwich for the kid & supporters. Got a real Croady feel to it.

It's an interesting stance and one not to dissimilar to when we recruited Jono, I am sure we backed ourselves to get him to a level where he can replace Mitch/Lewis etc... I'll back the club in but to me it's still a super risky ploy to move on a guy of Burtons talent.

The first individual player I feel in love with probably since Campbell Brown. I am going to be so incredibly frustrated to lose Burton just to gain another mature age player with question marks attached to him.
We have a bloke who was definitely the deserving rising star winner only 12 months ago. We gave him Sam Mitchell's number. We put him on a huge wall in Hawthorn along side Cyil and Jager. THEN we possibly offer to trade him for a bloke who could have already played his best football.
Massive bad taste in the mouth on this one. Not going to enter 2019 with much enthusiasm if this goes down. Would actually like to see us miss the 8 and Port make it just to prove a point.

Is the China smogfest game on next year? Surely that's enough reason for Burton to knock back the medical?
