Big slider, great pickup

This is a link to my Jack Whitlock playlist if you want to check him out:

Watched every video. I'm trying to work out the knock on him. Can kick on both sides, super competitive, great size, terrific agility, good hands. Genuine forward/ruck player. There's a bit of Lade in the way he plays.

Good on ya son, you’re a Port boy now! Is it just me or does he have a bit of the frustratingly mercurial traits of a J Daniher going by some of those highlights?
Smart choice I think. Should be hungry AF after last night and pre-draft hyperbole. Motivation to take the bull by the horns and shove it up every other team.
At the end of the day there is always a trade hook but if he develops well and pays his dues then it could be cash in the bank.

I was listening to SEN about an hour before the draft was on and heard Gerard Healey bang on about how pissed off he was the swans didnt take Jack at their first pick.

He finished off with - the boy from Norwood (Ned Bowman) better be good.

Twomey had him going at 18 to GWS and was the 3rd KPF he had listed being drafted, Richmond taking Sheahan at 14 and Port taking Armstrong at 16. Jack was the 5th KPF drafted and first 200cm player. His twin is a short arse at 197cm.

What’s the deal there? The Whitlock twins struck a chord with the football public on night 1 or are they a connected family?

Whitlock is a Shepparton boy - Berry from Wangaratta which is about 100kms away, They can share the driving home at Christmas time.
Berry is from Benalla, same town as Tom Rockcliff. Spoke to him and his dad tonight. Tom has been in touch, telling him what a wonderful club ect…Joe was rapt Whitlock got picked, they are great mates.

The Whitlocks - fascinating behind the scenes look at the brothers.

You have to love their attitude, they love being outdoors playing all sports, big kids who learned to play against other big kids by being each others' biggest rival in all manner of backyard sports.

Their mum would punish them by making them stay inside.

“It’s not every day you can go in the backyard and have one of the best key-position players in Australia to play against, so it’s very valuable,” Jack said.
“It’s good having someone to go through the same battles, and then also the same wins as you through life. We push each other pretty hard.”

They live on an 80 acre farm with goalposts set up, a basketball court, tennis court, cricket pitch and heaps of space. No wonder Parker and Cripps like them, there's Butters and Bergman characteristics rolled into the twins right there.

Matt even says they would prefer to be at different clubs so they could be their own person. Growing up, their parents emphasised their individuality rather than their 'twinness'.

I really didnt think we would get a shot at him or Shanahan with our second pick, but was hoping like hell! Amazed that he fell to us ... And that is genuine unlike the meme! Mick Ablett agrees:

The standout that Mick Ablett thinks should have been picked on night one is Murray Bushrangers tall Jack Whitlock, whose twin brother Matt was coincidentally taken with the final pick of the first round by North Melbourne on Wednesday.
“I think it's the twin brother, I think it's Jack Whitlock,” Ablett told SEN Breakfast.
“You're talking about a 200-centimetre player who's been an elite tall forward in the competition.
“He’s got the capacity to go and pinch hit in the ruck as well and I think he’s got a fantastic football brain.
“I was very, very surprised to see him still on the table, and that's where another club overnight who may have been equally surprised could have been on the phone trying to pinch that first pick in round two off the Tigers.”

So lives in Benella but plays for Wangaratta. Isnt that a fair drive?

The story I quoted earlier today from the Adveriser said Robbie Gray and Ben Anderson drove to Benella to see him play, so I assumed the Bushrangers were playing there.

Really pleased that he found his way to Port in the end. Great backstory, the kind of country football/sporting upbringing and great family environment that the Port recruiters love.

Good footy IQ, mobile, athletic, leads up around the ground and can ruck. Perfect fit for our second pick.

Funny he had a Port guernsey handy for his interview at the local footy club. Makes you wonder how much the AFL knows. ;)

Adding to his delight, Port Adelaide picked his close friend and Murray Bushrangers teammate Joe Berry with the 15th pick on Wednesday.

“Extremely stressful,” Jack said when asked about his long wait to get drafted.

“But super stoked to be with Port, especially with Joe Berry one of my good mates there. Can’t wait.”
