Just make sure you always have someone on his back about work ethic and using his brain to advantage. Those are not his strong points.

Lewis is a forward, Darren Milburn the new defensive coach. Dasher will punch him in the back of the head in every training contest until he leads up far enough to not get hit. His work ethic will improve.

Ha! Gold. :thumbsu:

I think Sando and his team will get him into gear pretty quick smart. Sando wouldn't have selected him if he didn't think he could.

Lefty too, we need a few of these. :D

It's not so much that he's rubbish, it's that when he announced he wanted out, nobody was expecting we'd get close to landing a 20 year old promising young forward who was a high draft pick. Especially not a contracted one.

Not so sure about that. Gunston looked nothing but right at home on the footy field.

Watched a bit of Jack prior to his drafting. He looks at home because he worked his arse off and listened and learned fast. It's a footballers best quality. You should be angry to lose him but if LJ delivers what his ability says the pain of losing him at Adelaide will be forgotten.

Interesting reading Emmas tweets, she is saying he never fit in and there were issues behind the scenes. Unlike her to tweet that without some info.

Let's hope a new home means a fresh start.

pretty much, it's the closest like for like replacement you can get, a '3rd tall' type flanker.

Its annoying we lost Gunston but we found the right replacement, he just now has to do it for himself.

Totally agree , Gunston is as natural footballer as you will find with great footy smarts and skills.

This was a quote from LJ when he was drafted....

"I wanted to stay in Adelaide at first so I was a little devastated when the Crows didn't take me with pick 10, but I was just excited to be drafted and was looking forward to the challenges ahead."

So maybe another homesick lad. But then again, didn't he just sign a two year extension?

Had a look at his BOG's in the NEAFL this year. Scored 7 goals from 10 games (2 bags of 3, and a single). It's interesting to note that he kicked the two bags of 3 in 'huuge' wins (talking 100+ points).

Also got in the best's 3 times, none of them involving goals. This suggests to me that whilst being drafted as a CHF, he is being played as a high half forward in that team (similar to that of the way we play Henderson). I'm not sure how this is effecting his game/confidence (or even desire to play considering they're playing him in a position that isn't natural to him).

It'll be interesting to see how we play him next year, whether it be in the exact same role as Gunston, or in a Henderson role...

I think there are two ways to go about it:

1) If Tippett goes, he plays a more Power Forward role at CHF, around the 40-60m mark, marking, then most of the time being that last kick into Walker or Porpoise (I hear he is a fabulous kick, spots up people beautifully).

2) Tippett stays, he plays 3rd foil to Tippett and Walker, roaming the 30-70m mark, beating up on opposition 3rd talls, playing the lead up role whilst Tippett is in the ruck, and Jacobs is sitting in a pocket.

3) Tippett stays, fights out for a spot with Henderson in the high half forward role, kicking 50m goals, floating into the 50m when running off his man (great endurance player according to reports)

For #1 to happen, I think he'd need to get up to about 90-92kg. Already has the attributes, but unfortunately injuries probably have curtailed any physical development he could do. Has only put on 1-2kg since he was drafted in 08'. Regardless if Tippett goes, I think he'll play 3rd tall, allowing Porpoise to run through the midfield.

I look forward to next year with anticipation for this kid! :thumbsu:

In his defence, we did have Gunston, Walker, Tippett, and McKernan when he signed. Can't blame him for thinking we didn't want him.

I just saw an interview he did with another SA swans player before the Swans Adelaide game this year. Said he was playing defence the whole time, with the goals coming in big wins which is what defenders sometimes like to do. It's good to know he can play that position :thumbsu:

Welcome indeed, I recall people being interested in him at the draft.

I don't find this to be particularly compelling evidence regarding Tippett. Since the end of the season we've lost three talls in Stevens, Davis, Gunston (plus Maric if you want to think that way). It seems only prudent that we add two back in Johnston and Lynch, given that I'm pretty sure we're planning to grab nothing but smalls with our few live draft picks.

We don't even have a tall left on the rookie list to promote.

He's played mostly in defence in the NEAFL this year.

Watch highlights of Lewis Johnston in action

What type of player are you?
I’m a centre half-forward who can play a lead-up role and also kick a few goals.

Strengths?
My marking and kicking are definitely my strengths. My speed isn’t too bad either – I'm pretty fast.

Weaknesses?
My weakness is my defensive side. I need to chase better and do a few more one-percenters.

Which AFL club do you support?
I’ve always supported Collingwood.

Which AFL player do you most resemble?
The clubs haven’t compared me with anyone, they’ve more just asked me who I compare myself to. I try to play like a Nick Riewoldt or Travis Cloke-type role.

whats your thoughts

I keep looking to find out what the catch is. Doesnt seem to be one.

Very very excited about this move.

I've heard reports he just didn't fit in well there. Combination of things being; wasn't given many opportunities, homesickness being compounded by injuries (playing football consistently makes homesickness less noticeable I'd think), and being played as a defender when he is far better and preferring to be a forward.

All these things seem to be eliminated with a move back to Adelaide, where he'll feel so much more comfortable. I getting excited :p
