Just a tad concerned here, this whole deal looks just too good to be true, seems a really strange move by Sydney who have an uncanny habit of getting it very right when they sit down at the trade table. I still can't get Paul Roos's words earlier in the year on "On The Couch" out of my head in relation to the attitude and work ethic to making it as SUCCESSFUL AFL player of several of their highly rated youngsters. I'm sure Johnston was one of the players he was eluding to....

Just hope in Lewis Johnston's it's not more than a case of homesickness here...

Mate I completely agree, but as I said, it's virtually Johnston for pick 35, given the fact Armstrong was a shoo-in to be delisted if not for Bicks. He wouldn't have amounted to anything in Adelaide as Jaensch, Brown and Shaw are all there to take his role. He only got in because MJ was injured.

Armstrong was going anyway and he is as good, if not better a prospect than the picks we gave up would procure.

Both lads living at "home" may alter their performances....

Delighted by this trade, I really didn't believe it when FAITH mentioned it earlier in the week, just seems too good to be true.

Johnston clearly has some issues to work on, but by the sounds of it he just doesn't love footy enough to "put up" with the displacement of being in Sydney. Hopefully back in Adelaide he can enjoy himself a bit more and it will carry over to his footy.

As for Armstrong, I see him as somewhat similar to Maric - he has some talent, and probably could have had an AFL career in our team if not for the presence of superior players in his position. He's really only got a spot as a small running back at AFL level, and Jaensch has that well and truly covered if he can remain on the park, with Brown a chance to take that role over as well.

When you have a commodity you have no use for, trading it for a commodity of equal value that you do have use for is a win. Receiving Johnston seems well above that value, so all the better for us :thumbsu:

The reason why he hasn't done much is because;
First Year: Weird foot injury put him out all year
Second Year: Another weird injury put him out for 16 matches
Third Year: Played as a defender in the NEAFL which isn't his natural position, but still got 2 games under his belt.

Played as a backman because of our coaching strategy for him. His Defensive work was simply not up to scratch for a forward and we hoped a move would benefit him. It did work, but not to the extent where we wouldn't trade him.

not sold on this trade, think everyone is getting a bit carried away. johnston has shown zero at afl level and is injury prone, armstrong will forge a decent career at sydney, was hung out to dry by craigy, has great skills i have no doubt he will be a good player.

The thing is, Armstrong was superfluous to our needs. We already have small running defenders well ahead of Armstrong in the pecking order. He likely wouldn't have played for us.

If I'm correct, then any real value is a win for us. Johnston is a risk, but at worst he doesn't work out and we get nothing more than a depth player, which is all I believe Armstrong would have remained for us.

I've go no problem with this, it's high risk/high reward. We will win some of these (Jacobs) and lose some (Tambling), be we have to have a crack.

Can we stop this crap please?

As for Johnston, I have a vague memory that there were concerns over his work ethic and personality when he was drafted, a bit fond of himself maybe??

I think getting traded for what he did, will place a bit of a dent in his confidence. Coming home and realizing he isn't top shit anymore, will change his attitude, plus he will not have a few bigger egos to deal with at the Crows (Vince, Walker, Dangerfield, MJ and Tippett if he stays).

He will fall into line and become a good AFL player.

Couldn't agree more, Drumm. :thumbsu:

If Craig had stayed, Armstrong would have been a delist at the end of the year.

Bicks on the other hand, played him once Craig had gone, which has led to us getting Lewis Johnston for what would have otherwise brought us a bag of chips and a half eaten pasty. :)

Noble deserves to be knighted for his efforts in this trade period.

Pick 24 for Gunston still remains the mystery pick though. I'm starting to think that it's going nowhere.

Gunston Unders -Hawks
Johnston unders - Adelaide
Lisle unders - Sydney

= even!!

Thoughts?

I see it as a low risk/variable reward situation.

Who knows what he'll be - we've got no idea. But we're risking very little to give him a go, so it's worthwhile :thumbsu:

Pretty much. Was thought of up here as a lazy larrikin. Loads of talent and a big figjam. From what I was told by a number of people at the Dogs is that the only reason they kept him on was to ensure they recieved the AFL money when he got drafted. What I heard though is he matured very quickly at the Swans, but he hasnt improved his work ethic. This could be the best thing for him though.

You lost me with the reference to the Dogs, I assume you mean Central Districts, LJ is from North Adelaide.

No. I mean his junior club Port Bulldogs FC here in Pirie.

I doubt it will dent his confidence, he is happy to just get back to SA.

Yeah agree Stabby, there is certainly a risk that he may be a bit of a dud, but the risk in terms of cost to us is rather low compared to the potential benefits if he does make it.

The whole thing is a risk, it has people in it.

I see this as an excellent trade. It's really want trade week is about. I also don't buy the almost mythical proportions they portray Sydney in. They fell arse backwards into some good trades from Hawthorn due to some real cap problems but they also traded for Mark Seaby and have shopped him around after 1 contract. Giving games to Marty Mattner doesn't make them Yoda.
