What I love about Darcy is that he has a footballer's brain. He thinks quickly on the field, and has general spacial awareness and decision making - just the little things like knowing where a teammate is going to run to, instinctively tapping the ball on to the right direction, etc

Often when you get 2+m tall blokes, they have weaknesses that you have to live with simply because height is a bell curve and there's so few 2+m tall men in our society. English is soft, Tom Boyd has small hands, Levi Casboult can't kick for goal etc. etc. for many of them, while they are athletic, and can jump and reach higher than their opponent, they simply don't have the naturally developed quick brain to be good at sports.

Darcy not only has a quick footy brain for a tall player, he even has a quick footy brain for any player.

Moves the ball on quickly to the right option and is a good kick off both feet. Cracks in hard. He’s got everything you could ask for from a young tall.

Yeah it’s nice to see in the Draft discussion about the talls in this years draft on the MB, comments that’s there is no standouts like Darcy in this years crop. Opposition really notice him too.

At this point he's probably going to be the gold standard for best tall in the draft for at least a few years.

Not sure if I mentioned it, but I have spoken to Luke personally who said Max Darcy may be better than Sam, not joking.

I am tipping Sam as our next captain in 2027. Two years of The Bont and then it will time to move over. Not that The Bont has not been a great captain but it would seem to just about the right time and person to do it.

Possibly, seems a bit soon though.
Will we need to offer Sanders the captaincy to keep him by then?

Sam will be 23 at the start of the 2027 season Bont was 24 not a lot of difference in age. I just see captaincy attributes in Sam like The Bont and think he is a standout to take over at some stage.
I also think Darcy would be a perfect captain, probably not in your time frame, but I get your drift.
Sanders is the weird one though. If he breaks out we are going to have to give him the captaincy, and/or break the bank to keep.
If he hasn't broken out by then, he could be in delist territory.

Difference is Bont had already played close to 150 games by the time he was made captain. It wasn't as much the age from him but the experiences he had playing under a range of captains, including Wood, Murphy, Boyd as a former captain and still in the leadership group, and even Griffen. Darcy's only played 28 games - that's only 28 times he's heard and learnt from what a captain does on match day, and all of them would have only been from Bont.

I'm sure Bont and Darcy play out their careers with us, but what about Sanders?
It could be a gold selection, but if could also be "beast mode" spending big to make a wrong call
I do think the Sanders thing will define Beast Modes legacy. Darcy was a bit of a gimme . Ugle Hagen was also a gimme.
Beast mode has got a couple of players for basically free, he needs to keep Sanders

Giving players captaincy just to retain them is a recipe for disaster. They either deserve it or they don't, it isn't a bargaining chip.

Another 2 years he hopefully has another 40 odd games. Maybe a bit early 2027 but to me he is our next captain and do not think maturity is an issue with Sam.

It's moot - Naughton is our next captain.

This weird discussion turn clearly has no place in this thread.
Discussions of the future captaincy potential of Sam are obviously appropriate.

Discussion of other future captaincy candidates less so, particularly when said other candidate has struggled so badly at AFL level that bringing their name up in this way could easily be considered trolling.

Just rewatched the 1st half of the EF, and reminded myself what a standout Sam was for us.

A few of his team mates could well be advised to watch it as well.
It shows what a talented and focused player can do even when things aren’t necessarily going his way, e.g. umpiring decisions, opposition attention, etc.
He wasn’t distracted, just kept finding ways to contribute to the team. Super impressive.

Really excited to see what he can produce next season and beyond. Fingers crossed he has a decent run with injury.

Terrific news. Clearly he was never leaving but it’s always good to nip the speculation cause by journos nice and early.

4 years is a great result for both Sam & the club. It locks his medium term future with the club away but allows him to sign another monster extension as a 25 year old down the track.

Any ideas on the 🤑🤑 per year??

I'm sure his father and Chris Grant have probably spoken to Sam at some point in his life. You can tell that he just "get's it" and if he has a couple of solid seasons then the captaincy is his for the taking if he wants it. He's already exhibiting excellent on field leadership and like Darcy Moore (ew) you know he's had access to all sorts of knowledge about the elite level for his entire football life.
