I see a lot of potential in him. Great mark, reads play well to intercept and has a nice big accurate kick on him to set up play deep in defence, and likes to run. Is 195cm so a lot of upside IMO.

A switch to playing with his school side Hale, combined with a growth spurt, attracted the attention of Claremont, though his initial season in 2012 was twice interrupted by injury.
"(The Hale year) was really a defining season for me. I grew a fair bit and got a lot stronger in my body. I was never small but I was one of those kids who had tall genes but just grew late," he said.
Barrass believes he was on the verge of senior selection this year for Claremont before he dislocated a finger. But it gave him a lot of time to spend with the group he co-captained. It is time that he treasured.

"A different type of cat, Tom Barrass scored a whopping 98.3 in his Australian Tertiary Entrance Rank in 2012, and instead of opting to head straight to university to become a doctor, lawyer or engineer he decided to take the year off, and concentrate on football – a decision that is set to pay dividends.

The 192cm, 81 Claremont product has played as WA’s key defender in the championships, taking on the bigger offensive weapons on the opposing side, whilst also offering the ability to rebound from half back, and organize his comrades in defence.

Barrass was a late bloomer, for in the past 18 months he has shot up 8cms, and there could still be some to go. He was never really sited in any of WA’s elite junior programs, but when he made the move to Hale School, talent managers started to take note, and within that period, he was invited over to the highly prodigious Claremont Colts side, "

Considered to be a leader and a motivator, Barrass has plenty of tools to become a very good key defender with the ability to press forward should the opportunity present itself. When it comes to Barrass’ disposal, he is remarkably elite in this area. His disposal at Colts level is a class above, despite not a lot of it being on show at the Nationals, given he played largely a lock down role. Beautiful kick of the footy, and doesn’t mind pushing up to the wing"

Sounds really promising, big scope for improvement IMO. A future FB you would actually trust with the ball in their hands to dispose of the ball really really well.

Interesting article from the former Windies quick.

Why? Glass is retiring and we needed to think of a new long term replacement for him.

Smart move by the club

!00% agree...We are sweet with Schofield & Emac as defenders and Brown is capable enough but once Glass retires we need someone developing for the next few years. Emac did not really start getting a game till 2009/2010 so that give him a few good years to develop his game.

I thought we were going to go after another ruckman and glad we took a defender,

Maybe we will Rookie Darcy Cameron, well hoping we do anyway.

Draft camp results:
20m: 3.06 (57%) (better than comparable players in Kolodjashi, McStay and quicker than alot of mids).
Agility: 8.32 (89%) - extremely good effort for his size
Standing vertical leap: 68cm (87%)
Running leap: 89cm (96%)

He also measured 195cm and 85kgs which is bigger than some sites have him.

So he is quick, agile and has a great leap. Also a very nice left foot kick. All the tools are there.

Welcome to the club Ron (see what I did there)

Let's hope you have a good long career with us and become one of our solid dependable defenders.

Solid Pick. The way he moves and goes for marks reminds me of Graham Polak in the video on afl site

Yeah I know, Im pretty happy with the pick actually. Just wanted to use a witty way to to put Barras into embarrassing lol
You're just so misunderstood mh. :rainbow: I have only heard of this kid but the skillset sounds good.

Welcome Barrassi. ;)
