West Coast Eagles Priority Pick (2024)

Personally they should be in line for something at some stage. Not sure when or what.

You can't expect teams to be utterly uncompetitive for 5+ years before they get out of the bottom 2 that's insane!

We really need a roster system whereby sides win a flag every 18 years and sides finish last every 18th year.

That would be fairest......

I'll ask again....apart from Chris Judd which good player from West Coast has gone back to Vic in the last 10 years.

Chad Morrison isn't an example.
Meh - i dont think its that big of a problem, weve lost judd, lycett, Rosa, and rioli that I can think of and bothered me.

Meanwhile we’ve got in (excluding when we started) kennedy, stenglein, redden, yeo, Jetta, cripps, hunt, Kelly, j jones just off the top of my head.

And there’s a couple more already this year too

There is nothing stopping West Coast applying for assistance in whatever form they deem fit.

Pride?

Anyway the AFL has handed out all its assistance this year to half the competition EXCEPT the team that finished last and was labelled the worst team in AFL history.

Geez. I dont want my club to ask for help but it seems every other club is getting it. Priority picks, compo picks, academy access and father sons every second year.

Yep dont like to be a begger like some other club but the AFL have created a situation where we would be negligent not to. Our second round pick 19 is now going to be 30. Our total pick value has droped so much that we loose points value of a pick in the 30s, at a very minimum we shluld get that back next year if we finish last again.

You won a flag 5 years ago

Get in line, Essendon are up front by a fair bit

Unfortunately the AFL have failed to shut the door once and for all with priority picks with the charity they've given North.

The decisions of the clubs list management evidently does not factor into the decision..if west coast finish bottom again, they could put forward an argument for a priority pick.

If not, why are North treated differently to other sides in similar positions since the former priority pick system was abolished?

It will start next year with better access to our own NGA's.

Expect the AFL to allow ANY club who is bottom 3 the rights to match bids. At worst the rights to match from pick 20. Currently pick 40.

A couple of additional rookie spots to help bring in kids or mature DFA's.

That isnt asking much at all. And would certainly help the Eagles depth and in turn competitiveness.

Importantely it is not gifting them first round picks at the expense of every other team.

if WC gets an AFL gift then my club should get a 1st round PP for the next 10 years, can't get more uncompetitive than 1 flag 60 years ago.

In saying that, the AFL does have a problem with bottom teams being able to rebuild in a semi-timely fashion

You blokes will be back before too long, probably without begging for help like NM.

People over cooking this with bad-faith arguments and trolling.

Simple fact is if WCE finish bottom 2~ again in 2024, then yes, they should be entitled to draft assistance similar to what NMFC got last year.

Draft assistance/priority picks are not about how bad you've been for 1 or even 2 seasons. It's about a sustained period of poor results and disadvantage.

I take it Hawthorn should now entitled to priority picks too then?

In the last four years, NMFC have won 4 games.

Hawthorn have won 27.

You haven't finished bottom 2 in a single one of those seasons.

This is what I was talking about with bad-faith arguments.

Priority Picks/Compensation Picks/Father & Son/Academy Selections all feed future Priority Picks.

"Oh, you finish last but you get earlier access in the draft".

Yes, West Coast have 1. But their 2nd pick will be 29, a mere 10 picks further back than where it would be on a pure last to first order.

This stifles the rebuild.

This then results in Priority Pick requests....

Yup.

Then add on to that the fact that NMFC have had either pick 1 or pick 2 in the last 4~ years but in all of those years haven't had access to the top talent of the draft either due to F/S or Academy picks.

Priority Picks exist to alleviate/address such circumstances as well.

I didn't mention NM. In the past four years NM have won 19.5 games though?

Let's assume in 2024 the wins/losses remain the same. HAW with 7 and WCE with 3.

WCE
2019 - 5th
2020 - 5th
2021 - 9th
2022 - 17th
2023 - 18th

HAW
2019 - 9th
2020 - 15th
2021 - 14th
2022 - 13th
2023 - 16th

Over a five-year period (2020-2024) WCE would have had 30 wins compared to HAW 34.

Over a six-year period (2019 - 2024) WCE would have had 45 wins equal to HAW 45

Based on this data we can deduce that HAW have been down the bottom for longer than WCE, and won as many games over that period give or take. Why do you think WCE should have one but HAW not?

It seems like a biased argument to justify charity.

For the record I think the system is a stain on the competition. It should be scrapped so clubs can save their dignity and avoid begging.

dont really see the incentive for clubs like west coast and hawthorn to be intelligent about their list management and use the resources available to build competitive lists when north showed you can just gut the list and act with complete incompetence which will be rewarded by the afl. the future of rebuilds is being heralded by north.

What disadvantage have west coast had ? They are one of the most powerful clubs in the country . So your are advocating for priority picks due to poor results which are entirely their own fault. You are advocating for priority picks to cover incompetence and poor list management decisions ?
