West Coast Eagles Priority Pick (2024)

“Shuey is for culture.”

And there is half the problem laid bare.

You’re either a dimwit or are in complete denial.

I said they brought in Kelly to supplement the already established core senior group ..mids, key forwards and backs etc

But most of them got recurring injuries at one stage or another in the last 3 years and you never really get a season with all your guns on the paddock together.

You basically begged JK to scramble through the last two seasons of 21’-22’ out of sheer desperation. The guy could hardly train most of the time.

Things just didn’t work out.

I don’t understand your point. Injuries started after Kelly.

Not sure if clairvoyants are in or out of the salary cap these days.

Now we can talk about our fitness staff and competency. Plenty of criticism can be laid there. But that’s separate to recruitment strategy.

I am not sure if you actually get a spoon for finishing last. But when you are a club like we are, whose ultimate goal is success, finishing anything other than first is failure. Degrees of failure is irrelevant.

Only to freo are there these labels such as “absolute” failure (vs failure) and “not ultimate” success. We do not resort to such rubbish. We were calling for heads when we finished 4th a few years ago.

To say we shall feel shame kind of tells you that you don’t actually understand wce fans. Just because freo fans feel shame (and you do as you only admit to supporting freo when there is a glimmer of making finals).

We will be back harder than ever. Ultimately deep down you know this. In mean time, enjoy it while you can.
"If you're not first you're last" huh? Just like a Carlton supporter. You're not coming back this time, it's 20 years on the bottom, where you belong. And yes the rest of the league will survive and thrive.

Wow,
This is a funny take. I do like the way you think you are superior and yet you don't get a spoon either.

So, since Freo has been in the comp WC has won 2 times (by less than a goal both times) in 28 seasons. Sounds very close to your 3/39 win record for your past 39 games. For a club who calls for heads when you come 4th, you have a lot of employees in very important roles on their 2nd or 3rd long service leave package.

Haven’t read thread but eagles won a flag in 2018 and haven’t even bottomed out their list yet. And their performances are linked to injury not list build.

So it’s a no from me dawg.

Its as simple as this. Get better fitness people, managing your list better, stop extending contracts for 30+ year old players, and hit the draft hard based on the picks you get.

Swap pick 1 for a bunch of picks and/or young WA players who want to come home.

Rinse and repeat next year.

Push hard in 2025 to start rising up the ladder. Without a PP.

Not accepting failure is also not trusting the process and seems to be worse long term for a club as there is no continuity within the footy department. Carlton being the poster child.

For all the huff and puff, WC is probably the opposite and has had the same people in charge for far too long. No one can dislodge them either.

Agreed it's just so sad seeing the eagles down.

We bank roll the close to the entire comp. We could withdraw and alot other clubs would fold.

This is idea is non negotiable.

It's not a good look that the only wa team wa has is down in the dumps

Again, it’s typical freo mentality. All about other things other than premierships. ‘Worse than freo has ever been’. I mean so what? It’s not a competition on who is less bad.

reality is that if you are bad, you are better off being last.

When your club has had 0 success you take pride in the failure of others to fill the void. Very little to look forward to and certainly nothing to look back on.

We know WCE will bounce back and find success again. What we don’t know is whether Freo will ever reach the ultimate. Let them have their little win here 👍🏻

Carlton supporter talking about "success" 😀

Yep, can't argue with any of that. We were set up terribly and run terribly by a bunch of out-of-their depth amateurs who were totally unprepared for what was required in a national comp and had no idea how important talent identification across the country was.

But we were also set up on a shoestring WAFL-esque budget. The eagles are supposedly the richest and most powerful club in the land and yet they've managed to assemble a dysfunctional operation that makes Neesham's Dockers look like the 2000 Bombers juggernaut in comparison.

So what's the eagles' excuse?
Lol, what?

You realise we’ve got players on our list right now who have won more finals than Fremantle right?

3 seasons ago we were playing in them.

Now taking that into consideration how much access do you think we’ve had to the pointy end of the draft over the course of the previous decade or so? Andrew Gaff was our most recent top 10 pick before Ginbey came along.

We had one more swing at another flag when we brought Kelly onboard which was fine at the time - a midfield of Naitanui, Yeo, Shuey and Kelly all within their prime years would’ve been a formidable combination but unfortunately they’ve hardly played together. Injuries robbed us of that and now the ships sailed, those guys are past their prime and the list is tired.

Lists get old, it happens, it’s not unique to West Coast.

With a naturally occurring older list even at full strength we’d be looking at finishing in the bottom 6 somewhere this year and last. You can’t stay on top forever.

Take a rebuilding list expecting to finish near the bottom and throw in an unprecedented number of injuries for a sustained length of time and you end up where we are now.

Personally I really don’t want any priority picks or concessions, I just want our injury prevention and management sorted out.

Another couple of 18-year-olds aren't what WCE needs.

It's not going to make them more competitive next year

Maybe if they make them trade only draft picks

Certainly more valid than a Fremantle nuff 😂 and even a Collingwood one… 🤔
you realise that since fremantle entered the comp - Carlton are one of the few teams we've been better than? Sure you won the flag in 1995, but that was because you cheated the salary cap, as you had done for decades prior.

Pretty rich for Carltank supporters to be taking potshots at others. Just enjoy you next re-build :)

Most Eagles fans (least on this forum) are not stupid or naive, they are fully aware they will win the spoon again next year, and possibly the year after.

But they sorely need more quality youth in desperately, Carlton went down this path (getting a lot of vets/experienced players in 2003 after we lost all our draft picks, and aside from Heath Scotland, who ended up being a fine 200 game player for the club, none of those other experienced players did anything meaningful for the footy club.

You guys cheated the cap too remember, but instead of a flag you cheated your way to a wooden spoon.

This.

I couldn't give 2 shits if we win the next 2 spoons, provided there's continual growth in players and a clear change in style of play. Results long-term will take care of themselves and I'd much rather have a 5 year flag window than later this decade, than chase a few extra wins next year by bringing in older players.

1 is greater than 0 for those south of the river playing at home.

Best to leave Freo out of any conversations regarding success, you won’t win many (though you are used to that).

haha, more comments from the Peanut Gallery :)

you realise Fabian Francis was never on our playing list ...... far cry from Carlton's legitimate cheating.

You're very good at reminding people of the past, but speaking of the present, how does it feel to currently have the worst team in modern AFL history

you're not very good at your comprehension so i'll spell it out for you - you won in 1995, the year you were proven to be cheating - oh and you also used your money to get Greg Williams for pushing an umpire at that time as well, so 1995 doesnt really. So basically youve won diddly since freo have been in.

It wasn't cheating the cap, it was an overpayment of match day payments due to injuries which resulted in a fine. Happened all the time back then to a lot of clubs.

Since then, the AFL have changed the system and clubs are allowed to flex payments between years to cover this. For instance, WC are reportedly paying over the cap this year as they had to put NN on a 2 year deal so they could backend his wage to fit it in, some with McGovern. Hence why you could only take 1 player at the mid season draft.

A fledging club making a mistake 20 years ago is one thing but the experienced WC still continuing to make the same mistakes right now should be a concern.

Have a read of anything other than Bay 13 and you will find nothing proven in 1995. No matter how hard you wish it into existence it just didn’t happen.
