The comment by Barnett early this year that, when he loses the first ruck contest of the day, he knows he’s in for a bad day was insightful. All he’s done so far appears to confirm that sort of pessimism, lack of competitive spirit and lack of resilience. Talls take time of course but this guy’s displaying traits which suggest he’s totally unsuited to an AFL career, despite his obvious physical attributes.
agree with all of this

which begs the question - why the hell did he get a contract extension?

Add Dean Cox to that, he came within a whisker of being traded to St Kilda as Gardiner was ahead of him in the pecking order. Gardiner's PCL injury changed the plans and Cox became the number 1 ruck, and the rest is history.

I reckon Jamo would have been a handy ruck but his lack of size meant he was never a chance. Alwya a competitor, remember him throwing his body around when he was 80 off kgs.

Livingston doesn’t have the talent of Barnett but think his career will pan out a lot better than Harry’s

Livingston has the crazy eyes. That's a huge tick for a ruckperson.

It’s a pretty weird like for like when you want to compare Dean Cox who won a Simpson medal in his first year of league football in a grand final to Harry Barnett who seems to want to run a lap of the oval if he wins a hit out..

Even more funnier when I have seen people use Cox as an example/excuse for Barnett as to why rucks take time to come on.

We’ve been pretty spoiled for young rucks going right back to Gardiner in 1997, so our view of how they should be performing two seasons into their career might be a bit skewed.

A few rucks who weren’t Gardiner or Cox or Naitanui:
  • Gawn played four senior games in his first three years, all coming in his second year
  • Goldstein played three senior games in his first two years
  • Xerri didn’t debut until his third season (stuck behind Goldstein)
  • Darcy Cameron spent his first three seasons at Sydney and played just one senior game, stuck behind Callum Sinclair
  • Nankervis also spent his first three seasons at Sydney and played 12 games, 7 of them coming in his third season

Watching Barnett is weird. He plays like someone who has checked out and is trying to get traded NBA style. But he signed for two more years, so seemingly is happy and wants an AFL career.... he really needs to pull his finger out, his effort is unacceptable

On the plus side, Archer Reid could be a forward 50 colossus for us in a few years

Weekly guess at the WAFL team for their game against 2nd placed East Perth assuming no late outs

Backs: Bazzo, Jones, Baker
Rucks: Flynn, Barnett
Mids: Chesser, Culley
Fwds: Reid, Livingstone, Petruccelle, Rawlinson

Left Hutchinson out as he appears to have been the travelling emergency to Tasmania

Flynn, Jones and Petruccelle give us some senior experience but the other 8 are all 21 or under with no more than 3 years on our list

Could be a rough day at MRP

Bizarrely the game starts half an hour before our match against North at 11.10

Chesser in?

But Darcy as a young player was a very good ruckman at WAFL level before getting drafted to the AFL.
Barnett can’t win a ruck tap to save himself.
A very poor comparison!

The WAFL fixtures were set at the beginning of the year and the later rounds AFL fixtures were floating. Explains why the games will overlap.

Both Archer Reid and Jack Petruccelle named to play, so looks like Jack Hutchinson is the travelling emergency this week.

Jamaine Jones named in the midfield gives you a pretty good indication of how light on we are there. Jai Culley the only AFL-listed mid.
