What exactly is Ross Lyon's new game plan for Freo?

Good post. It's great to see something other than the usual 'derp Ross doesn't play da youf' BS. I think this is a real risk of the team defense first style of gameplan and I seriously wonder if it's had an impact on the flair of players like Hill, Walters, Ballantyne etc.

Its not just one thing, it is a combination of KPP players getting older or retiring, not enough good ones coming through, and general exhaustion lower output across the board. It can happen once a side feels their chance of a flag is going or gone, they can drop from being top 4 to well outside the 8 very quickly.

I do think Freo will turn it around to some degree and will turn it on at times and probably claim some big scalps here and there, but it will be hard to make the 8, especially if injuries keep mounting.

Even the most die hard Freo supporters are saying to me today they're done..especially after sandi going out.

Rebuild starts now you'd think

Even if we made a run now and scraped into the finals, my opinion is we'd just be making up the numbers and not n a position to have a crack at the big one.

Might as well put time into whatever game plan changes they think is required, pump time into players they expect will play the roles next year and gear up (not in a Dons kind of way) for a crack in 2017 and beyond.

saints made finals in 2011 after a poor start and losing our best mid to an ACL. there's no excuse as to why freo cant make finals

Has Ross ever done a rebuild though? He might need to Google it ...

Why are so many people under the illusion that the senior coach is responsible for everything at football clubs?

It's Chris Bond and his recruitment/development team that need to deliver the lions share of the rebuild. Ross needs to create the gameplan and strategy to include the new talent. It's actually not that hard to understand!

Perhaps your comprehension skills aren't very good.

I'm not arguing that we can't make the finals. I'm saying my opinion is we'd get bundled out without being a serious chance at the premiership and we'd be better placed acknowledging that now and planning accordingly.

Hooker for free, McCarthy for a freddo frog at this point, Hogan after you trade us Lachhie Neale and have at least 3 first rounders on your hands.

I've never had a hooker for free. How did you manage that?

Relax pussycat - why so angry? I understand how footy clubs work, but it's a bit rich to try and push the idea that the coach is not a HUGE part of the team direction and strategy.

Do you think Ross Lyon will have a massive influence in how a rebuild develops ... I do. My point was that Lyon hasn't seemed to be involved in rebuilds before and therefore would be an inexperienced coach to handle that sort of transition. I'm not even sure if he enjoys that phase of coaching?

Anyway, I rate Ross - he obviously can coach - but not winning a premiership over the journey is going to haunt him until he does.

I know the Ross Lyon game plan :

- slide out the exit door after depleting his former team and not getting a flag
- accept a great new contract at a different club
- load the new team with hacks and blue collar role players
- be competitive for a couple years but still not get a flag (or often score more than 9 goals a game)
- accept another contract
- slide down the ladder due to a combination of the match day plan being figured out and the old hacks getting even worse
- miss the finals
- take frustration out on a journalist in a press conference with eyes darting left to right at a stupidly rapid rate
- slide out the exit door due to a contract loophole, and into the next ready-made list to inherit, exhaust and leave flagless and with a monumental rebuild needed

Rinse/repeat #teflonRoss
