Western Bulldogs recruit Oskar Baker is loving his start to life at the Whitten Oval.

After being delisted by Melbourne at the end of 2022, Baker was offered a lifeline by the Dogs as a Pre-Season Supplemental Selection and he’s already begun repaying the club’s faith.
So far, Baker has played every game in 2023 for his new club, for two wins and two losses, averaging almost a goal a game to go along with a solid 16 disposals per outing on the wing.

Now that he’s starting to cement his spot, Baker says he feels like he’s getting more confident by the week as his performances begin to track in the right direction.

“I’ve absolutely loved my time so far at the Dogs,” Baker told SEN Crunch Time.

“I feel like I’ve fit in really well, the fresh start has done wonders for me.

“With the way I’ve started the year, I’m just getting more confidence week-in, week-out.

“I’m just really trying to cement my spot in the team and contribute every week.

“I’m loving every minute of it, hopefully, I can continue to grow and become the player I want to and I think I’m capable of.”
While Baker is coming off a year where he failed to break through for a senior game with Melbourne, the 24-year-old believes it was his best year in the system.

He reflected on the importance of playing a strong game in Casey’s VFL Grand Final win over Southport, an outing that proved he was capable of playing above the state-league level.

“Looking back on it, I think it (the VFL Grand Final) was pretty important,” Baker said.

“But not just that game, looking back on it now as weird as it is because I didn’t play an AFL game last year, I almost found it my strongest AFL season to date.

“I thought my form was really consistent and that was going to hold me in really good stead if I had another opportunity to perform again this year.

“I think that’s really set me up with the way I’ve started this year and play my footy.

“But yeah, I do think that Grand Final performance last year nailed me to get another opportunity with the Dogs.”

With his time at Melbourne seemingly coming to an end following 15 games for the club midway through last season, Baker spoke about how he ended up a Bulldog and his relationship with new coach Luke Beveridge.

“I found out through my manager there was a bit of interest from the Dogs midway through last year,” Baker said.

“Then as the season went on and I got delisted by Melbourne, those conversations continued to grow.

“I caught up with Luke Beveridge and Sam Power in the off-season and those conversations got deeper.

“Lucky enough I was able to make my way to the club … from day one I’ve walked in Bevo has really backed me in.

“He’s encouraged me to use my strengths, my run and carry and speed with the ball to try and create offence for us.

“He’s filled me with confidence to get out there, play to my strengths and give me the belief that I do belong and that I can be a real role player for our team.”

After starting the season 0-2, the Bulldogs go in search of their third-straight win when they face Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

THE WESTERN Bulldogs have recovered from a winless first fortnight to be 2-2 and are now likely to be boosted by the inclusion of gun small forward Cody Weightman for Gather Round.

The 22-year-old has missed the first four games of 2023 due to an adductor issue that flared late in the pre-season, ruling him out of the intra-club and the practice match.

But after a conservative build across the past two months to treat the groin overload issue, Weightman is poised to return against Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.
The 2019 first-round pick completed a testing training session at Skinner Reserve on Friday and is understood to have recovered well.

Weightman will need to continue to prove his fitness at training this week before the club heads to Adelaide on Friday afternoon, but there is a confidence he will start his campaign in South Australia.Luke Beveridge will be forced to make at least one change ahead of the trip to South Australia after key defender Alex Keath was concussed in a collision with Tom Lynch.
Lynch has been sent straight to the AFL tribunal after the Match Review Officer graded the incident as careless, severe impact and high contact, although the reigning Jack Dyer Medallist broke his foot in the game and is set to be sidelined for a couple of months.

Ryan Gardner is expected to replace Keath this weekend after spending the past fortnight in the VFL, following elbow surgery on the eve of the season.
Sam Darcy was dropped after round two and has since split his time between attack and in the ruck, but is another option in defence.

Hayden Crozier has escaped serious injury after a nasty incident in the third quarter that ended his day after colliding with teammate Josh Bruce in a contest with Rhyan Mansell.
Scans have cleared the 29-year-old of structural damage to his back, but the former Docker is in doubt for the clash against the Power, who responded after a disappointing fortnight by beating Sydney at the SCG on Saturday night.

Taylor Duryea will come under consideration to return after missing the round three win over Brisbane due to illness, before missing out on selection against Damien Hardwick’s side.

The two-time premiership defender played for Footscray in the 23-point win over Richmond’s reserves at the Swinburne Centre on Saturday, where Toby McLean produced a dominant display to put his hand up for a recall.

McLean amassed 47 disposals, 17 clearances, eight tackles and seven inside 50s after being dropped following the round two loss to St Kilda.

Since the loss to the Saints, the Dogs have beaten two of 2022 finalists in Brisbane and Richmond to steady the ship ahead of a weekend where the football world congregates in the city of churches.

Seems like Cody managed to give his abductors the slip.
It'll be exciting if he pulls through training this week. Just needs to make sure he doesn't aggravate his groin overload issue.
Groin awareness is so important.

Groin awareness is so important.
Groin awareness, inner scrotum.

No wonder we lost the first 2 games, our players need to handle themselves better!

No wonder we lost the first 2 games, our players need to handle themselves better!

The outcomes over the first two weeks were clearly a result of us being penile-ised for our lack of attention to those areas. (Perhaps Beveridge's instruction to "bust your gut" at every contest was mis-heard… in which case our form turnaround over the past two weeks follows from a clarification of consonants…)

Surely you’re joking Mr. Hoyne
He's kicking lower and flatter this year

I didn't hear the exact conversation with Daniel Hoyne but Oskar Baker has a better percentage of kicks inside 50 from the standpoint of the team retaining possession...

Hoyne could've been talking about hitting targets, numbers I do not currently have. But from a retention point of view, Baker and Richards are by far the best for us in that category. From an inside mid point of view Treloar, Macrae and Libba have reasonable numbers but Bont and B. Smith's numbers are well below average. Of course from an inside mid point of view, these can be skewed by dump kicks inside 50.

On the radio last night Sam McClure was crapping on about how good Jake Stringer was on the weekend, Leigh Mathew’s in his deadpan way just said “don’t expect him to do it again!” or something along those lines. “He’s just too inconsistent”.

Not sure if anyone really cares about this, but apparently only 3 were ever produced (according to the MCG Australian Sports Museum), and one is currently for sale on eBay (assuming it's genuine as one photo has a blurb from manufacturer Sekem), opening bid is 10k, or you can buy it outright for 90k! (Apologies for anyone triggered by the images!)

Kylie Watson-Wheeler surges into contention to replace Gillon McLachlan as AFL CEO

As the search to replace Gillon McLachlan continues, Western Bulldogs president Kylie Watson-Wheeler has surged into contention for the top job.

Western Bulldogs president Kylie Watson-Wheeler has surged into contention as a key contender to replace Gillon McLachlan as the AFL Commission’s search is whittled down to a handful of candidates.
AFL legal and football boss Andrew Dillon and Watson-Wheeler are believed to be the favourites for the role even as AFL chairman Richard Goyder told presidents this week McLachlan would remain in the chair for the next few weeks.
Watson-Wheeler has impressed the AFL Commission with her commercial nous in their recent interviews with her as the senior vice president and managing director of The Walt Disney Company in Australia and New Zealand.
It is understood she was handed a late invite to the AFL’s gala Gather Round dinner on Wednesday night at the prestigious Magill Estate winery, home to wine producer Penfolds.
Other candidates including AFL executive Travis Auld and Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale have not been told they are out of the running.
Watson-Wheeler had denied interest in the AFL’s top role last year, but industry insiders believe she and Dillon are the top two choices for the AFL commission.

She was reluctant to throw her hat into the ring but has strong support given her commercial background and football experience as a Dogs board member since 2013.
McLachlan said on Wednesday Goyder’s discussion with the AFL’s presidents was to provide clarity and clear air so there was no speculation about his future across the Gather Round weekend.
“On that I think Richard was talking to the fact that Gather Round is about the footy. I think it will play out in the coming weeks, I think everyone’s okay with that. He just is giving an update and I think it’s coming down to his last pieces (of the process). Footy is going really well. The Commission’s got a big decision to make, and they’re working through it,” he said.

Adam Cooney reveals how he exited Western Bulldogs

Adam Cooney’s time was up at the Bulldogs by the end of 2014, and they didn’t mince words when showing him the door.

[PLAYERCARD]Adam Cooney[/PLAYERCARD] said the Bulldogs were a rabble the end of his final year at the club.

Adam Cooney said the Bulldogs were a rabble the end of his final year at the club.

Adam Cooney has revealed why he had to leave the Western Bulldogs and said he almost signed for North Melbourne before he was charmed by James Hird.
The Brownlow Medal winner spent a decade at Whitten Oval before being told at the end of 2014 by then coach Brendan McCartney he wasn’t going to get a game.
“I was in a meeting with North Melbourne, I was mid meeting with (coach) Brad Scott talking about where I fit in the team,’’ he said.
“I was signed, sealed and delivered, going to North, a three year deal and they were in the premiership window. And then I left there and (Essendon recruiting boss) Adrian Dodoro rang me straight away.
“He said how’d your meeting with North go, I went yeah it went pretty well and he said before you sign come have a meeting with me and Hirdy.
“As soon as I looked into Hirdy’s golden locks and his blue eyes I was like sold. He went over everything, he said look this is what the situation is, we’re 95 per cent sure that we’re going to be found not guilty, there’s no evidence against us whatsoever.”

Cooney said McCartney wasn’t the right fit at the Bulldogs.
“You talk about good coaches knowing individual players, that’s why he didn’t last,’’ he said.
“He was a bit robotic, everyone has to do this, he was obsessed. Then it drove the players away from wanting to play and we were just a rabble towards the back end of 2014.

“I had my exit meeting … they sat me down and said you’ll either be playing VFL next year or we’ll probably just pay you out.
“I walked out and rang my manager and said I think I need a trade.”
Cooney said he relayed his concerns to club president Peter Gordon but never heard from the club again.
“Brownlow night, probably not the best night to do it, and I sat down with Peter Gordon who was the president of the club and I was sitting with all the boys on the table and I said I’m going to go talk to him right now.
“I just said everything, talked about all the young players, the environment just isn’t right, he’s just not the right guy for the group. And he was really thankful, he said thank you for talking to us about this. We had some concerns, let me give you a call in the next couple of days and we’ll have a meeting and sort it out. And I didn’t hear back from the club.
Never heard from any of them again.”

Looks like a standard Fitzroy jumper to me. Wouldn't pay $10 for it let alone $10k.

Like Maddog said ... 🤮🤮

Would rather have folded than ended up wearing that

Yeah, sorry everyone.

Shows how far we were going to be screwed in the "merger".

Fitzroy colours.
Fitzroy jumper and logo.
Fitzroy name (Bulldog as mascot).
Board 50/50, but chairman from Fitzroy.
Fitzroy theme song.
Play games at Fitzroy's then home-ground (but train at WO - what a concession!)
Fitzroy coach.
"Merger" but!

Wiegard wanted to screw us as much as VFL house (Oakley) did.
Yet I've had Fitzroy supporters (one repeatedly) say to me we screwed them in 1996 when we chased them legally for not fulfilling their contract to use WO for their home games!
