Really impressed that we are in the 'top 8' for average attendance so far in 2023 (see below). Given that we don't get gifted any 'blockbusters' and we've played a game at Ballarat I reckon we should be proud of our club's support trajectory.

And a game at Manuka too. Only 10,039 went to that.

I’d temper this by noting we’re currently 14th (25k) for home attendance, above only North, of the Vic clubs.

However, we’ve only played 4 home games and one was a 10k crowd at Ballarat. If that had been at Marvel and drawn say 25k, we’d move above the Hawks on average attendance.

Saints are ahead of us by about 8k per game off the back of having a home game against the Bombers at the G that drew 70k. They’ve otherwise averaged about 23k per game against three poor drawing interstate sides (Freo, GC & Port).

This is the discussion I referred to above about the impact of Liam Jones at the Dogs this year. The discussion starts at 9.17 in the video and goes for about 3 minutes. Very interesting stuff

Is it bad that I saw 9.17 and thought you were referring to our goal kicking?

At least Kane Cornes called out Max Kings Flop

Kane Cornes has called for the AFL to stamp out players staging for free kicks.

Across Saturday’s Round 11 action, Cornes pointed out two incidents of what he considers blatant flopping with St Kilda’s Max King picking up a free kick against Hawthorn’s James Blanck and Western Bulldog Cody Weightman drawing a whistle against Gold Coast’s Ben Long.
With King and Weightman both kicking goals following the free kicks, Cornes called for the AFL to encourage umpires to instead penalise the instigator when they feel a player stages.

“There’s an issue for the game and it is flopping,” Cornes told Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

“We saw Cody Weightman do it (on Saturday against Gold Coast).

“In the NBA they have this problem as well, they’re considering penalising floppers or those staging for fouls with a technical free throw in-game.

“I think we need to start doing the same (in the AFL).

“We’ve got to get it out of the game, it’s easy to do it, just penalise them, pay a free kick against and players will stop doing it.”

Cornes also said he expects King and Weightman to receive fines from the MRO due to their acts.

“I think that you blow the whistle and pay the free kick against (for staging),” Cornes said.

“Instead of rewarding him (Weightman) for the free kick, luckily Gold Coast still won that game but it frustrates anyone.

“(It should be) a fine for (Max) King and a fine for Weightman (from the MRO).

“But further than that pay a free kick against.”

This is a bit dumb. Cornes is suggesting they should have paid a free kick against Weightman and King, even if the footage shows it to be the case the umpire clearly didn't they think they were dives or else they wouldnt have paid a free kick in the first place.

Time to introduce an NRL type review system. Also have the captain's review, 2 per game. Jeremy Cameron staged one yesterday and got up grinning. He missed the kick though.

You would hate to be an umpire in todays game

Yes. The thing is the named players don't always stage or exaggerate. Very often the free is there anyway without any signal from the infringed player. So do you not pay it because it's player X? Cody in my totally unbiased opinion doesn't stage per se - ie nobody has touched him - but he does exaggerate the contact. At least he doesn't constantly whinge like players from clubs such as ones starting with G and M.

Anyone listen to SEN overnight? I was still up at midnight and our loss to Gold Coast and St Kildas loss to Hawthorn were referred to as “cultural mediocrity.”

What the hell does that even mean?

What the hell does that even mean?
Obviously only small teams with poor cultures would lose games like that, unlike Melbourne losing to Freo, Geelong losing to GWS or Carlton losing to Sydney - all of which were excusable and unrelated to club culture.

Of course. Who was it (the announcer)?

Rest assured, neither King nor Cody will be fined.

The MRO will nor even mention them, and nor should they

Suns hold their nerve to hold off Bulldogs

Gold Coast have pulled off one of their finest wins of the season, beating a fast-finishing Western Bulldogs by seven points to kick-start their push for a debut finals berth.

Jack Lukosius booted five goals, including four in the second quarter, while Matt Rowell turned in an imperious midfield performance to deliver a 13.6 (84) to 11.11 (77) victory at TIO Stadium.

The Suns held their nerve late as the Bulldogs, with the help of two contentious umpiring decisions, surged.

Gold Coast, aiming to make their first finals series in their 13th season, improved their record to 5-6 while the wasteful Bulldogs (7-4) spurned a chance to leap into the top four.

The victory is a timely one for coach Stuart Dew, who stood up for himself this week as recently departed Richmond mentor Damien Hardwick was linked to his job.

Rowell racked up 29 disposals, 16 clearances, eight score involvements and 702 metres gained along with a goal, while Lukosius’ second-quarter haul turned the game Gold Coast’s way.

Charlie Ballard (11 intercept possessions) intercepted at will for the Suns while the Bulldogs’ in-form defensive recruit Liam Jones (13 intercepts, seven marks) was superb.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (three goals) consistently threatened to break the game open but couldn’t haul the Bulldogs over the line, while Jack Macrae (33 touches) and Marcus Bontempelli (28) had plenty of the ball.

The Bulldogs kicked the first three goals, including Ugle-Hagan dobbing a set shot after catching the ball-holding Wil Powell with a crunching tackle.

Gold Coast fought back and were buoyed when 100-gamer Nick Holman kicked a goal after the quarter-time siren to cut the deficit to two points.
his snap had just clipped the goal post and the Suns held on.

I hope GC make finals. I like the cut of their jib ... less so Stewie's jib but that's nothing a proper diet and a bit of restraint at the buffet couldn't fix and I like him nonetheless.
