What They're Saying - The Bulldogs Media Thread - Part 4

Carlton and GWS will probably finish closer to the bracket as the season goes on. Think they will be the two other top 4 finishers other than Sydney. 4th spot is completely up for grabs imo.

We have an incredibly difficult run home post bye.

Norf
Port Away
Carlton Home
Geelong down in their shithole
Swans Away
Melbourne Home
Adelaide Away
Norf
GWS Ballarat

I suspect the wheels will probably fall off and we miss finals but we're seeing that we have the belief. Even if we miss this year, I'm confident that we'd be thereabouts next year.

Brisbane and Freo both at Marvel - win win, Norf win, Port away 50-50, Carlton 50-50, Geelong 50-50, Swans loss, Melbourne win, Adelaide win, Norf win, Plastics win.

So I count 13 wins, then win one or two 50-50s, I'll say Port and bugger it, Geelong, that's 15.

That is far too optimistic for any true dogs supporter. Total blasphemy!!

Yeah did the same calculation I thought if we win these 2 marvel games before the bye then we can 13 wins. Then I can remember to the same calculations last season counting WCE as a certain win at home.

This is an excellent episode of the Ads and Dunks podcast. Treloar talks about the change in his mindset in the last 18months that has allowed him to play career best footy. From this obsessive over trainer, always comparing himself to other players to someone who has found the perfect balance between footy and everything else. Genuinely happy for him and long may it continue.

The interesting discussion starts at 15mins:

Gerard is in some fine form today

Gerard Whateley has called on the AFL to ensure that never again will clubs be given two byes before another team has one, in the wake of Brisbane’s crushing win over the Western Bulldogs.

The Lions were the better team from the opening bounce on Friday night and went on to punish a tired Bulldogs outfit by 43 points, despite going in as outsiders.
But Opening Round had handed the Lions a fixture peculiarity that may have played a role in the Round 13 triumph that got Brisbane’s finals hopes somewhat back on track.

After playing in the second game of the season, the Lions missed Round 2 to make up for Opening Round. While it raised discussion at the time, a bye after two games wasn’t seen as a major competitive advantage.

The eight teams to play in Opening Round all had a bye in the first six weeks.

But the Lions were also one of four teams to have the Round 12 bye, meaning they had two weeks off before the Dogs had even one.

It was a recipe for disaster, according to Whateley.

“We don’t do fairness in the AFL, but this has skewed things wickedly,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time about teams having two byes before another team has had one.
“It can’t be allowed to repeat. It cannot.”

In what is set to be a much anticipated aspect to Round 13, the same scenario will occur twice more.

Both GWS and Sydney are coming off the Round 12 bye but also had the week off in Rounds 3 and 5 respectively.

The Giants play Hawthorn on Saturday afternoon, while Sydney hosts Geelong on Sunday.

Hawthorn great Luke Hodge echoed Whateley’s sentiment.

“You cannot next year have another to have two byes before anyone has one, it just should not work that way,” Hodge added.

“The Hawks are a young team but they’ve got a pretty good injury list… but the Doggies have been depleted (with injuries), you could really see it last night.

“Next year and moving forward, this cannot happen.”

Tom Liberatore (concussion) returned for the Dogs’ Friday night loss, however Luke Beveridge was missing Aaron Naughton (knee), Sam Darcy (suspension), James Harmes (hamstring), Jason Johannisen (hamstring), Ed Richards (concussion), Cody Weightman (elbow) and Nick Coffield (shoulder) with short term injuries.

If only this big secret could have been discovered at the time the draw was made, so we can correct it next season and too bad for any clubs who lose out this year.

Last year we were fortunate to be one of the first teams to get to play an SA team for Gather Round, meaning an extra away game. This year we not only play a team who has had 2 byes before we've had 1, but we play 3 games against teams who are fresh coming off a bye whilst we await ours with a big injury list, and play Round 1 against a side who played Round 0.

Can't wait to just miss finals again.

The fixturing has been a joke but what do you expect when we have clowns running the competition

No doubt. It's utter incompetence.

It's probably a result of listening too much to the networks (or being leaned on by them). They couldn't give a shit about collateral damage as long as they maximise their air time and advertising dollars.

But what if right, what if we make the finals after a good run with form and injuries after the bye.

Then it'll be, oh the Bulldogs were advantaged by the fixture because they had a later bye so were fresher in the back half and able to sustain their run longer. Good fixture Bulldogs ... HQs pet. Let's penalise them next year. Let's give them the bye in August ... just them.

We'll lose if we don't make the 8....and we'll lose if we do.

Teams coming off the bye should play another team coming off the bye. Designing a draw that eliminates the current inequities is not rocket surgery. But as Gerard Whately said, "...the AFL is not about fairness."

No argument here Mutt. I kinda hope that we make finals and win some just for the pleasure of sticking it up them despite the inequitable draw/fixture.

It's not about Bevo anymore. It's full-blown AFL conspiracy and Bourke St against us. We must heck them right up.

Viva la revolución

Do I get bonus points for choosing to use heck instead of having it foisted upon me

Doesn’t our club have input into what we want/need? Is the fixture just presented to the clubs as a fait accompli, with no avenue for pointing out unfairness?

Glad somebody in the media has finally come out and said it. I've been banging that drum for years.

Oh surprise a small Victorian with a small membership base gets shafted regarding AFL fixture fairness

That’s too logical for the AFL.
If it makes sense to the AFL it definitely won’t happen

AFL finger prints and manipulation are all over the draw

WESTERN Bulldogs key defender Alex Keath will be sidelined for at least the next six weeks after straining his hamstring in Friday night's loss to Brisbane, but Ed Richards has now cleared concussion protocols and is set to return against Fremantle on Saturday.

Keath came off the ground in the closing minutes of the loss to the Lions and underwent scans over the weekend, which have revealed more damage than first feared.

The 32-year-old will be sidelined until the end of July at the earliest with a moderate-grade hamstring strain.
After an interrupted summer at the Whitten Oval due to a knee injury, Keath spent the first couple of months of the season playing for Footscray in the VFL before an opportunity opened up in round nine.

Richards missed a second game with concussion after not clearing protocols in time early last week, but the gun defender-turned-midfielder returned to full training on Saturday and has been given the green light to face the Dockers at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With Keath joining Ryan Gardner on the sidelines for a large chunk of the second half of the season, an opportunity presents for former first-round pick Jedd Busslingerto make his debut.
The 2022 No.13 pick spent most of last year developing his body and game after recovering from major shoulder surgery in his draft year, but has taken significant steps forward in recent months, averaging 23.8 disposals and 9.8 marks per game across the past four games for Footscray.

Luke Beveridge might stick with Buku Khamis and play James O'Donnell in defence to start with, but Busslinger will come under consideration during Keath's absence, especially if he continues to improve his one-on-one craft.

Small forward Cody Weightman is on track to return just after the bye in round 15, while key forward Aaron Naughton and recruits James Harmes and Nick Coffieldwill be pushing to be available within the next fortnight.

It wouldn't be a complete game without Alex Keath injured.
