What They're Saying - The Bulldogs Media Thread

My apologies, Dogwatch. The discussion probably headed in this direction because I posted a link to an article in which Libba briefly mentioned that, this season, the coach won't be stifling the flair of players such as Hunter and Stringer. In some ways, I suppose I have similar feelings to the Professor, in that I just want to understand what has transpired at the club over the last twelve months. At the moment, I really don't know what to think... For future reference, when posting such a link, should I give it a thread of its own, find a relevant existing thread or post it in here?
No probs and good question. Mods may have their own view but here's mine ...

If it's just an interesting story post the link here (or whichever media thread we use).
If it's more than interesting and warrants some discussion, there might be an existing thread so in addition to logging it in this thread you could post it in the other discussion thread with some commentary and maybe invite further comment.
If it seems to be breaking new ground or is a big news story (e.g. announcement of WB strategic venture into Ballarat) then a new thread is a good idea.

Probably no hard and fast rules but Mods tend to discourage a proliferation of threads.

For what it's worth I'd like to understand what went wrong too. There's still so much we don't know. But that's for another thread ;)

I agree that this isn't the thread for Macca posts but..
Unfortunately, the thread we had that was dedicated to Macca was locked quite some time ago by the mods.
Proffessor is right in that is a very large and very recent episode in our history, and things about the Macca tenure seem to still be coming to light. It is obvious to me that many of us still have things about the Macca era to discuss, especially when there are news reports that touch on what happened over the past three seasons, so is it any wonder that these little derailments keep popping up everywhere.
Do people think we need to reopen or start a new Macca thread for these discussions?
I understand there are a few on here that are heartily sick of it all, but then they dont need to read the thread do they?

Dude, that thread was a gigantic shitfest at the end with people on both sides acting like spoilt children. Have a little sympathy for the people who have to go through that mod whenever someone's feelings get hurt.

In other news, Bev seems to be carrying himself a lot better in front of the camera! Not chewing on his words anymore!

I attach no significance whatsoever to how a coach performs in the media. I could not care less. Clarkson was at times intolerant of the media as was/is Malthouse. Couldn't give a stuff. If I were asked the same sort of inane questions the media are prone to ask, I'd probably react similarly. If you are someone that requires the coach to spell out for you what you can readily see and analyse for yourself, well and good. How we are progressing, developing and playing is largely self evident.
Further to this, I'm waiting for the day when a coach stands up at a press conference and says to the assembled media "just **** off and stop wasting my time". I hope it's Bev.

Stuck in the 50s?
We need someone that's promotes the club in a positive way. How they handle the media is an important in today's afl.
Yeah stuck in the 50's Ernie. I make allowances for the fact that some people can't work things out for themselves and require a media perspective to make their minds up for them.
Bottom line. People like winners. The coach being an ahole will be overlooked in those circumstances. They'll buy the shirts anyway.

"While the Dogs will again pride themselves on contested possession, which was the mantra of former coach Brendan McCartney, Beveridge is expected to allow his men to show greater flair - when the opportunity permits."

God I love this quote, before we had found our new coach I repeatedly said how I wanted a coach who would keep our strong focus on the contested ball but just add another layer to it on the outside. Sounds bloody perfect. Also love hearing that Libba will spend more time forward (and Stringers name mentioned in regards to midfield minutes) reckon Libba will add goalscoring to his game this year, thats the next level for him. How much is he paying for top 5 or 10 in the brownlow?

When you have a-hole coach who is crap with the media like we had then we are a winner both ways

Reading todays articles has me pumped. I don't expect a great year, but much like 2012 & 2013 I'm so excited to see our young blokes go about it! Will be exciting to watch!
And I'm wondering if MD will start a sack the coach thread after todays 'Mosquito Fleet' article in the age :p
(That's a joke MD if it didn't translate :) )

Anyone else love the way Bev goes about it in the media? Just simple things like his quote about Boyd "being nowhere near ready". He just gives you a lot more genuine options rather than cliche after cliche, a big difference compared to Macca.

He's also compared boyd to hawkins and Bonti to kouta. So I love that he recognises the elite potential of these guys. Any tool knows that these boys have a long way to go. We don't need to hear that over and over again. But I love that he's comfortable talking about the ceiling for these guys as well. It's entertaining and I'll be farked if it has a negative impact on the players themselves. Should be more of it.

On Boyd, he's spot on about the flow-on effect of having him down there.

“He’s a big man, there is talent there and he will definitely attract the footy which will create opportunities for others.”

We know the perpetual media whingers won't divert from their blinkered "$7 mil for 7 years for a 19-year-old nine-gamer mindset and they'll jump on Boyd if he doesn't boot six a game.

But, the impact and the presence of having him at full/centre half forward will be like a Christmas present to our small forwards and the likes of Crameri and Stringer. In four years, we'll look back on the Boyd recruitment as one of our best ever and hopefully, we can say the same about Bev.

I hope Libba can do that, but my concern is that, with Griffenoyd gone, Libba might just cop a strong(er) tag a lot more this year...whether he plays mid or up forward.
