I'm just curious, It won't take anything away from the game it just reminds me of a tattoo. That is something you do as a kid for laugh but as you get older it become embarrassing and cringe worthy.

For me, I think the concept is what drives me away from every really caring about the games given the forced nature of the naming of the game.

Anyone else think it needs to be dropped now or at least a revamp?

(and to the Port Power trolls, the games won or lost aren't going to change, that's not what I'm talking about, so save your typing for something else)

The name is OK, it is the numbering which bothers me, it's only relevant to the club leading the count I suppose (and currently that's prob why it bothers me !). What happens in 30 years time ? Showdown 80 this weekend folks ! The count will probably still be very close but who cares !!!

I reckon your spot on their mate. I think the AFL/Crows & Power should get together and re-name it quickly.

I think something like "The Derby" would be better suited, it sounds more appealing and of course you dop that stupid numbering crap. I think the showdown gives a sense of false hope. Showdown usually gives an heir of great performances, but honestly, when was the last time that both teams have been evenly matched in a showdown. Honestly, I can not remember?

I think the tag has well and truly been flogged to death.
Let the games speak for themselves.

But having said that in the year 2031 (if Port last that long) we should be in for a chuckle.

never ... get used to it.

If it survived the whole 'West End' thing, it will last forever now.

I couldnt care less about the name of it or if it even had a name at all, but I wouldnt think the naming of the game is forced. It just is was it is. Noone really talks about them except for the week of the game imo.

Doesn't really bother me either. Don't see anything wrong with there eventually being "Showdown 230" either, it'll just be a nice reminder of how far we've come.

We never here Carlton Vs Collingwood being hyped up and they have been battling each other for over 100 years.

The name's a bit wanky, the number is a lot wanky.

Do we need to be the same as Carlton or Collingwood?

No. I think what he's suggesting is with Carlton Collingwood the rivalry is just there. Whether one team is top and one is bottom or one team has won the last 10 encounters between the sides, the hatred for the oppositon is just there. It's not forced out by a week of media hype.

If there was no "name" for the showdown it would still be the same - the rivalry is there, we would still hate Port and they would still hate us and both teams would be hanging out to beat each other. No amount of red, blue and yellow or black, white and teal Balfours products is going to hype up the rivalry anymore for the genuine supporters. We have as strong a rivalry as any of those traditional Melbourne rivalries, but you could argue that the name, the hype, the showdown doughnuts all kind of look like we're trying to force a rivalry which is as strong, if not stronger, than any other in the comp.

While I don't really care, the name is a bit wanky and so is the counting but I guess it's going to be a part of Port Crows games forever. No big deal.

Don't we have "rivalry round" - isn't that when we play the showdowns traditionally? And Brisbane play Sydney, West Coast and Freo... and I thought the traditional Vicwegian rivals as well? All the games in that round are built up - they've got cups for just about all of them don't they?
