A lot of it IS venting, for sure. I was disappointed after our loss against the Dees (coughing up a 40+ point lead) and then frustrated by us not showing up at all vs Port and I've made a few bitter posts. Covid. Lockdowns. The footy might just be a bright spot to tide some of us over and if that goes pear-shaped, and I know it's not the most adult way to cope, cracking the sads can become a coping mechansim.

Thanks, Geelong_Sicko. A brilliantly concise way of explaining what so much of Big Footy is all about.

The club will rightly or wrongly roll with this for another season. Honestly they probably have to due to decisions made recently.
2023 is our hope to start again IMO.
Even then unless the club starts to feel it where it hurts nothing will change. 70,000 members this year.... I get it's a record next year too.

This should have been done already. They just keep expecting things to be different, but the players are so fried mentally it will never work.

It will be the same shit mate.

Wait another couple of months. Hit the draft and bring in Talia and some other old farts.
Start preseason with social media about Blicavs and Guthrie killing it in the time trials. We'll get puff pieces about how much this loss hurt and why the players are more determined than ever.

Same repetitive crap we have seen since 2014.

well we need to replace coaches and let players go and rebuild and maybe take a dive for a year.

Probably. Going to wreck us for a decade.

The psychological impact of perpetual finals failure will haunt this team for a decade or more. Something is profoundly wrong within the club and I expect when Scott goes - hopefully 5 years ago but I'll accept tomorrow - the dirt will fly.

Yep. Tonight was devastating. The Dee's reminds me of the 2008 / 2009 Cats team. Everything was easy. Big breath. Without a doubt a readjustment of the game plan is now required. Speed on the spread and foot skills are the priorities, in my opinion. Remember, the Dee's have benefited greatly from a lot of top 10 draft picks. However, I am not in the camp of switching coaches.

We decided to make throw everything at a flag with our recruiting in recent times and it hasn't ended well.

I was never keen on what we shelled out for Jeremy. 3 first-round picks. GWS pick-up Hogan for a fish-n-chip rapper and according to Montagna's analysis there hasn't been much difference in their output. GWS must be thinking how good is this. I'm sure Jeremy will play some good football for us over at least the next couple of years but I'm guessing tonight, looking at the GWS list and its draft choices, he'll be thinking "what have I done"

I have a feeling SW's decision to take a less active role had a bit to do with his displeasure at being furloughed during the Covid stand-downs. He said publicly he expected shorter hours but was surprised when told by Lloyd he was one of the many to be furloughed. Plus, I'm guessing he was looking forward to having several early draft picks for the first time in a while only to see them vanish before his eyes.

Enough of recruiting players with injury histories like Higgins. Time for a serious revitalisation.

I felt nothing after last weeks Semi win, because I think I knew deep down this was going to happen tonight, maybe not by 80+ points, but knew that we weren't playing past tonight.

Managed to get up and about today and look forward to the game, but 5 minutes in you could see that we couldn't win it.

This feels different to past years, since we last missed the finals in 2015 we always seem to have "If Only" Syndrome.

2016 If only we didn't play bad in the first quarter against the Swans
2017 If only we didn't have to play our home final against the Tigers at the G
2018 If only we didn't start so bad against Melbourne
2019 If only Richmond didn't have Dusty
2020 If only Richmond really didn't have Dusty
2021 If only Stewart didn't get injured.

Its time to face the facts, this side cant deliver a flag, If Melbourne doesn't stop us next year, will it be we meet Port in a Prelim, will Brisbane win some games in September, will the Bulldogs go on with it, there are too many teams that have to fall over for us to be a genuine shot.

Hard calls need to be made:
Henry, Parfitt, Holmes, Miers, Ratugolea, Close, Narkle, Simpson, Constable, Clark, Evans, Brownless & De Koning and have to be retained and all get regular runs in the 22 next year to see what they can do.

No middle road for Zach Guthrie in 2022, in our best 22 or traded out.

Any player over 30 that is uncontracted needs to be wished well and moved on.

Scott either needs to be signed on for 5 years to complete a rebuild or asked to step aside now for a new direction to be taken.

We need to build our core, players 25 to 28 need to become the heart of the side, Selwood is an all time great, but I think one of the biggest statements tonight was Selwood was expected to play and shut down Oliver while Nathan Jones sat in the stands and can't get a game for Melbourne.

Since Dangerfield arrived
2016 Lost Prelim
2017 Lost Prelim
2018 Lost Elim
2019 Lost Prelim
2020 Lost GF
2021 Lost Prlim

I think there is enough Data now to say this doesn't work, time for a refresh, and maybe a year or two of hurt.

This is not what Dangerfield, Selwood and Hawkins want to hear, but we now need to focus on Cameron's year 4 and 5 at Geelong being our next Premiership Tilt.

The Harshest of realities is-
A) teams with half the best 22 over 30 years of age rarely win premierships.
B) Our number one footballer this year Tom Stewart has only one year left as a footballer playing for Geelong in his 20's

This is harsh I know, but I am excited after tonight's game because what has happened means, the club, board, coaching staff and players can no longer hide from the facts.

ITS TIME TO STOP TRYING TO STEAL ONE MORE FLAG, AND FOCUS ON PREPARING TO WIN OUR NEXT ONE!!!!!

I just want us to turn up in the first final for a ****ing change. Do a Melbourne and just come out ruthless from the start, none of that feeling each other out or seeing what the opposition do first, come out breathing fire, put the opposition to the sword with hard ruthless contested footy, work hard as a team and convert chances.
We've not done that since 2011, so even if you take the topping up for a flag chance as a good decision we still enter finals on the back foot and fighting against the tide. I'm ****ing sick of it.

It’s a good point to
Make actually , how much will these failed finals will hurt the culture and mindset of the club moving forward?

I said it years ago that the senior players had their chances and will never win a flag , sadly not only was I right but it may have destroyed the nextgeneration moving forward.

Pasting this here as my thread was locked:

Just wanted to see how other people are feeling about last night and where we stand as a footy club, now there's nowhere else to hide for this current group. I want to talk about how our current list strategy could really lead us into some of the darkest days the club has ever seen.

This game had a breaking-point feel about it for me. Chris Scott tried his usual post-game spin of reloading next year and having another crack, but I can't see how the playing group can buy into his bullshit anymore after this. This was a humiliation that will probably serve as the final nail in the coffin of the group's belief in themselves.

The recipe for disaster as I see it:

1) We've traded youth injection for top-ups for the last 5+ years, so we have almost no quality coming through the ranks. Jack Henry/Brad Close is about it, and maybe Zuthrie. In return, we've received Dangerfield, who is now past his prime and will fade away pretty quickly. Cameron, who's a good player but relies on supply that his team can't give him. Higgins who has been a steaming pile of dogshit. Dalhaus, likewise. Rohan, can't play in finals. So I see this top-up procedure as a complete and utter failure, and the years we've skipped on the draft we now have to make up, with no senior group left to teach the youngsters when they filter through.

2) We've had to compromise on our gameplan because we haven't had the cavalry to implement a run-and-carry pressure gamestyle that wins finals. This has lead to the entire playing group having no mental practice with pressure footy. As soon as the blowtorch is on them, they instantly crumble. This team has been coached to bunt instead of going for home runs. It's not going to help you at the bottom of the ninth when the series is on the line. They don't know how to absorb pressure and apply their own in these games when things heat up.

3) Our midfield is now too old to compete in any real sense. I think we're about to see how bad it can get when you let the midfield fall of a cliff without a backup plan. Topping the engine room up with Ablett/Dangerfield, plus losing Tim Kelly, without having access to young talent to inject in there is now going to see us relying on guys like Parfitt, Guthrie, Simpson etc. And with Stanley a year or two away from retiring, we also wont have any experienced ruckman to take up the mantle. Thinking about relying solely on Ratugolea or Blicavs in the ruck is terrifying.

So having said all of this, what happens from here? With the midfield even weaker next year, with our list aging beyond anything the AFL has ever seen, and with no draft picks on the horizon to help stop the bleeding, what do we do?

I can't see anything productive to be done other than to just bring in as much youth as we already have, and try to start the painful process of resetting. There are a number of players that need to retire or be shown the door. Selwood, Henderson, Higgins, Kolo, Blicavs and Rohan all just seem to lack any real utility for finals in the future. I love Joel but the game has now gone past him. He can't be relied on in the middle anymore. We need to make the hard call and replace these guys with youngsters and allow the team to slide down the ladder. From there, we need to earn draft picks and start the long process of rebuilding from the ground up.

I don't see any other way. Am I wrong?

We're hardly the first team to try to squeeze every last possible drop from the orange (e.g. Hawthorn in the second half of the 2010s), or top up constantly because we're "Just one or two players away from a flag". And we sure won't be the last.

We gave it everything with the current list, but it's over. I accept that, but it was worth the shot.

Happy for us to move past this group and start seriously rebuilding for the future.

That should have happened 5+ years ago before the stars in our team got too old. It's too late now.

Yes, any opportunity to win a flag now is buried for at least 5 years. But clubs, if they are brave and smart, can regenerate quickly.

I find it ironic that we apparently have the God of recruiting and talent ID, yet we’ve effectively let him have the Penski file for the last decade. Ffs, he built our last premiership era through the draft. Let him have a crack at it again.

Difference was that the Hawks won 3 flags since we won our last. And they are now 2 years ahead of starting their rebuild.

83 points in a prelim is decisive.

I suspect a lot will come down to the capacity to lean on older players to retire - to a list that included Higgins, Dalhaus, Henderson, Dangerfield (who effectively leaves us a midfielder down because he simply refuses to defend), Jenkins, and with regret, Rohan, I would add four or five younger players who we clearly have not had the confidence to play in the ones and/or who are perennially injured. Generate enough space on the list to allow us to draft at least eight or nine players, and you should be able to get at least one outstanding mid from that group and perhaps two, as well as decisive changing the atmosphere. Give those players a cohort, and give them a chance.

At least as important, we need to fix our attitude to younger players - we are a very long way from the Scott who insisted on having four young players in every game in 2011, which from memory was adhered to in all but one game and which was crucial to our success in the grand final. It seems to me a serious problem that those young players we have brought in who clearly have talent (Clark the outstanding example, but also Narkle) have not been developed in ways that makes them a) want to stay at the Cats and b) be trusted in big games.

No one thing can fix a cultural problem that values age and experience at the cost of development: there has to be a balance, so that the team that runs out, in addition to some experience, also has some of the energy and recklessness and spontaneity of younger players that is the hallmark of the best teams. Recruit of players and coaches, development of players, selection, and general atmosphere all play a part.

Pity none of us said anything about it back then.

Oh wait.
Congrats... after 10 years and 10 attempts..

You got one right.

Welcome back by the way. I figured this would really draw you back here
