NBA/Basketball is more popular in China than Cricket is in India.
Oh dear. You have absolutely nfi what cricket is like in India. Not the slightest clue. Cricket in India is more popular than any other sport in any other country. Why do you think they are so incredibly crap at every other sport?? Why do you think they won a gold and two bronze during the last olympics?? Answer: Because they don't play anything else. It's cricket and only cricket.

There's a damn good reason why the wealthiest sporting organisation in the world is not FIFA, or UEFA, or ICC, or the IOC ... it's the ICB (Indian Cricket Board) and they're ****ing shitting it in.

Where's the Chinese Basketball Committee (or whatever it's called) in comparison to that?

The TRUE Aussie football club unfortunately no longer exists. They merged with Brisbane, but feel free to wikipedia the "Fitzroy Lions" as they were the real mccoy.

It's a nice fairy-story, but THE Fitzroy Football Club most definitely exist - in Melbourne and playing out of the Brunswick Street Oval to boot.

2010 membership of a 127 year old club is now available $30.00

How can you play against a club you said didn't exist?

That may be, but Fitzroy Football Club's home ground is the Brunswick Street Oval.

what this guy said.

cricket in india is absolutely MASSIVE, basketball in china not so massive. i've been to both countries.

Precisely.

It's always a bad sign when simple things need to be pointed out to someone twice in the same thread before they comprehend them, of course - sharp as a tack, is Godzke ;)

The first few years after Yao Ming got drafted, basketball was MASSIVE in China. All it takes is a little bit of interest and theres another 40 million people watching basketball. The scale is unbelievable.

Think you've sort of missed the point. The scale is big in both cases, but the normal day-to-day, year-to-year interest in cricket in India is comparable to the sorts of big events most sports in any country would dream of.

How is that relevant? Why does the popularity of the sport overseas change our true national team? The Australian cricket team shits all over the Socceroos (and the other teams you listed) in terms of national popularity. A few people jumping on a bandwagon every four years will never change that.

BTW, cricket is the 2nd most popular team sport in the world.

Whatever you reckon...
"Sweeney's annual sports survey (the Melbourne-based company that does the most credible sports surveys on an annual basis) published in December last year had 51 per cent of Australians expressing interest in cricket as a sport (as opposed to the national cricket team), against 50 per cent for soccer. But in the 16-29 male demographic, soccer was more popular (59 per cent to 55). The Gemba group, a sports management and marketing company with offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Hong Kong, surveys Australians as to their awareness of national teams. On their last figures, the Australian cricket team was running at 87.5 per cent, just ahead of the Socceroos (84.6) in awareness. Gemba also surveys the ''likeability'' of the teams. On this scale, the cricket team was at 34.2 per cent of respondents, just ahead of the Socceroos' 27.8 per cent."

Sweeney's general manager Todd Deacon sees cricket remaining ahead of the game, largely because of its accessibility over long periods of time, by comparison with the Socceroos dropping in and then flitting back to European leagues. ''I think it's a real stretch [for soccer]. That's my view, unless the Socceroos reached a final in the World Cup. That would change everything. If you look at where we've been popular in sports, we tend to be the best in the world, and it's a long stretch for Australia to be the best in the world in football.''

Yet the World Cup is less than a year away and even Deacon acknowledges that the Socceroos have spikes in popularity that are virtually unmatchable in this country. When Australia played Italy for a place in the quarter-finals at the 2006 World Cup, there were 3.5 million Australians watching on television at 3am."

It has to be Sydney because Sydney is a synonym for Australia .

Sydney is the most well known team outside of Australia stemming from the VFL days when Sydney was the only side to play on (and be televised) on Sunday .

.

Yep, good call. As much as Melbourne wants it, Sydney is the most recognisable Aussie city. Therefore, The Swans must be Australia's team...discuss:D

I watched that game and I was filthy when that scum Italian player took that dive but it's a moot point though. Australians follow their country in team sports and always want them to succeed, even when they don't follow the sport.

I watched every game Australia played in the worl cup and I will watch every game they play in the next one, simply because I support Australia, not because I support soccer.

Exactly... of course, some folks don't like it when real and credible data is presented on these subjects...

You're dreaming if you believe the Socceroos are genuinely more popular than the Australian cricket team. By genuinely, I mean in terms of REAL supporters, supporters that love the game and the team, not people that jump on a bandwagon because they want to support their country during the World Cup.

I wonder which sportsman is more well-known throughout Australia? It's a tough one.

Really? How so exactly?

THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM IS THE ALL AUSTRALIAN TEAM HERE--http://www.afl.com.au/Portals/0/2009/finals/AllAUS09team.gif

Yeah, of course genius.

That's why we've had consecutive membership records in the last 2 seasons, and our numbers for 2010 are over 3500 higher than they were at the same time last year.

Isn't it embarrassing to be THAT clueless?

How the hell can 12.5% of the population be NOT aware of the Australia cricket team? I call bullshit.

Haha... :D

Yeah, I was wondering how 15.4% of the population could be unaware of the Socceroos too! Criminal it is.

We should have a new citizenship test for all Australians based on these issues, test everyone's knowledge and deport anyone who isn't up to snuff :p

Hi,

I am an American, and right now, it is Football season. In America, the Green Bay Packers are called America's team. Yes, some will argue that the lowly Dallas Cowboys are America's team, but the Packers have been around since the beginning, and they have a TON of titles, that is why the Packers are also called Title Town.

But, now since I am trying to follow this sport of yours, which team represents Australia? Who is Australia's team?

Bret

Which other Wisconsin teams have been successful besides the Packers for it to be considered "title town"?

Bucks? No. Brewers?

I have always thought of Collingwood the Australian Rules version of the New England Patriots. They are popular but everybody hates them, haha.

Packers are probably the most like Carlton in that they have a long dedicated history and have been very successful.

You don't want to follow either of these teams though. Seriously.

PS; Calling the Packers "America's Team" is ******ed. The 'Boys are and always will be "America's Team", because they are cocky and a poorly ran organisation.

Har har har.
