Who do we target in this years draft?

I feel that we have enough tough inside players, albeit you can't have too many of those. Our club has gone out of their way to recruit tough players and we may fall into the trap of not having enough flair when the game is close. It takes the brilliance of a Burgoyne to break a stalemate and we are becoming a little bit lacking in pace lately. Not sure what we will go after first but we do need a player who can run and carry.

Flashy outside runner, Choco would love him.

I liked Smith's attitude and his willingness to get in after the hard ball - can hoof it a fair distance for a young kid too. But the 'experts' tip he'll be long gone by our pick. Of course the 'experts' tip a lot of things every year. ;)

Yeah he has a thirst for contested ball but what I loved about him in the game against the eagles yesterday was his willingness to sacrifice his ball getting game to concentrate on shutting down one of norwoods dangerous pacy players. Did an excellent job in the 1st half and I think that momentum shifted when Phillips found himself being marked by other eagles players in the 3rd quarter.

And on the bold bit, stop getting my hopes up Ford. The letdown is getting harder to deal with as I get older. :)

Make no mistake, Smith is a inside mid that has an ability like Shaun (arghhh I said his name) to get out of traffic with pace. He has similar traits to Judd. Dont think for a second I am saying he is as good as him but he is that same 'style' of inside mid that will greak away from congestion with extreme pace. His 1st 5-10 yards can be electric. And how someone as lightly built as him can regularly break tackles is amazing. I want him bad.

Wow!! I need to check this kid out. It seems that there is a general consensus that quality mids with a bit of grunt and pace are a must for us.

There seem to be a number of phantom drafts so far where people engineer Lycett falling to #16, which smacks of convenience ranking.

I think one PD I saw had Smith at #16 but was beset by posters saying there was no way it would happen, that at best he wouldn't get past Brisbane's pick.

I think we have a heap of class in the middle, Banner, Gray and Salopek and we have an abundance of Grunt, Boak, Thomas and Broadbent, but we lack the quick players outside, Pearce, Motlop, Hamish, we need more, we need them to get fit and stay fit, but adding one of each to our list ovver the next two years would be a massive goal.

Yeah he is worth keeping an eye on regardless of where he ends up. I believe he will be one of the better AFL mids in a few years time. I may be overstating his abilities a fraction..........maybe!

If we could somehow snag him would be great but I have doubts he will be available at our pick but here's hoping. Bonus that he is an SA lad as well. First time in a while that there is a group of quality SA lads. Wish we had last years picks this year, nothing against the kids we picked up.

I'll be spewin' if we take Polec.
They had the game pretty much sewn up until THAT kick.

Looks a very laconic player and doesn't work hard both ways. Attitude problems, pass.

I wouldn't rule it out, might fall a few picks short. I just hope if we go for a ruck we draft them because they are smart footballers, not because they can jump over a house!

i think for his age polec has shown heaps. will go early. i do really want smith on our team more though, just love his ability. been mentioned around the place that he is a pafc supporter. he is exactly what we need. very likely to be looked at from ess8 gc9 briz 10.i cant see him going past gcs pick 11 but then could come my horror scenario, the crows getting smith. im hopeing for a player exodus from the gc in a few years. we can get them in the psd, which im not normally a fan of getting players that way but easy come easy go hey coasters. i also see melb taking lycett with pick 12. fits their needs perfectly.

Surely our first pick must be a midfielder.

Re: Speculative Trade Discussion

Not that you can take stock of the trade and draft rumours but someone says Port is interested in Billie Smedts. Anybody know who he is?

geelong falcons defender/flanker. who says we are interested? probably a flow on of sheehan picking him for pafc in the tac mock draft. which we dont know was based on any inkling they may have had or they just thought that was the range smedts should be in. probably the latter.

Seems like Michael Pettigrew 2.0 to me...

With a name like that we just have to get him...The Mullett!!!:thumbsu:

Didn't see anything from Smedts there that said he is a player we need. Will be quite happy to see him go be a Brent Moloney type somewhere else.

Had a think about it:

One of Smith, Polec or Gaff with our first:

Smith:

211659.jpg

Medium defender/midfielder with a terrific speed-endurance combination. Powerful player who bursts from stoppages and wins plenty of the footy. Starred in the under-18 championships with All Australian honours, and averaged 22 disposals, five clearances and six inside 50s.

Polec:

Left-footed long-kicking player who excelled in 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, winning All Australian honours. Has pace and composure around goal with impressive form at senior level in the SANFL.

Gaff:

Left-footer with a terrific game sense; imposes himself on games and has good pace and endurance combination. All-Australian team member in the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, where he averaged 27 disposals at 79 per cent efficiency.

Fasolo with our second:

Impressive player for WA in the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, where he averaged 19 disposals with 67 per cent efficiency. Good clearance player with good decision-making ability.

Litherland with our third:

Angus is a tall defender with excellent closing speed and spoiling ability. He shows ability to rebound from defence.

Dalhaus with our forth:

Small Midfielder who kicks goals, his in and under work is terrific. Good pace, solid skills, hope he gets a late growth spurt though.

Rookies: Charlie Riewoldt, Matt Snook, Sam Gray, Josh Trembath, Mitch Curnow, Nick Liddle.

Charlie Riewoldt:

___CharlieRiewoldt_246a.jpg

The younger brother of Richmond key forward Jack and the cousin of St Kilda superstar Nick the 184cm Tasmanian forward is not key position player material, talent scouts rate his creativity and inherent goal sense.

Matt Snook:

211697.jpg

Hard at it for his size. He isn't express for his height or have an overly damaging kick for his height. Has a lot of go about him and has solid hands in close.

He does have traites of a Rory Sloane (not as good with his hands); will give you the effort every game. Curious to see his combine results because if he's got a big enough tank a run with role could await.

Sam Gray:

2010_gray_sam.jpg

Port boy and midfielder who can sneak a goal aswell, fairly high possession winner.

Josh Trembath:

493914-joshtrembath.jpg

My boy for the year. Mid Sized Forward, who can kick a bag of goals. Has played very well for the Glenelg Reserves this year sneaking in to the league squad once or twice, as he has for the past couple of years. Deserves a shot if available.

Mitch Curnow:

076600-mitch-curnow.jpg

Mitch Curnow is an athletic and mobile ruckman in the 2010 SA U18 squad. 201cm and just 17 years of age, he possesses excellent skills and awareness for a player his size.

Nick Liddle:

002188-nick-liddle-south-.jpg

t’s back to back Club Best and Fairest’s for Liddle after he collected the 2009 Coburg award. The diminutive 23 year old rover has been a revelation since joining the Panthers in 2010.
His ball winning ability, tackling and consistency of effort couldn’t be questioned in a difficult year for the Panthers.

Tape from Glenelg looks to be a handy footballer. I think he was the captain of SA's Under 18 side. He made his League debut in a final a couple of weeks ago. I think he is the nephew of ex WWT/Richmond/Collingwood player Jamie (RIP).

Jayden Hoegel, keep an eye on that name come draft/preseason/rookie time. Port have expressed serious interest in him. Ex vic metro player, played at the box hill hawks this year and had a very good year. Small hard at it, I repeat, hard at it midfielder/foward.

I don't know what to make of the footage of Gaff from the VicM v WA game. He reminded me quite a bit of Brad Symes with better foot-skills, but equally ineffective handball.

He got virtually all of his possessions uncontested in the back half, mainly chipping the ball 20-35m, albeit very neatly. Showed poise but never seemed to exert himself to try to break away from a nearby player or get around him with evasion. The one time he sharked a ball near a contest, he was unable to run away from the opponent and ended up scrubbering a 10m kick forward.

I realise it is 3min of footage from one game, but I would have liked to see more preparedness to back himself to run off players and more inside-ball winning.

5metre sprint result = Brodie Smith 1st place.

Well I am assuming its 1st and that the AFL/Bigpond are up to their usual level of incompetence and they have the list upside down.

They say he is a prolific ball winner. The type of player that Collingwood like because he can use his foot skills to move the ball in a zone. Is a work horse who runs his opponens into the ground and seems to get easy ball because of the hard work he has done. Will go in the top 5. We would be lucky to get him.

Yeah im well keen on drafting Sam Rowe. Would much prefer him to Moff on our list.

Lee Spurr and Nick Duigan are two others I wouldnt mind seeing.
