Who do we target in this years draft?

I liked the look of Duigan this year, strong and quick, but ... he's 27yo next year and has a bit of an injury history - hasn't played 100 SANFL games yet.

Watching the physical intensity of the AFL, and even the SANFL, GF there is room again in the game for the nuggety, wombat mids who can get down really low, burrowing relentlessly into packs and get the ball out of congestion or get hit in the head and get a free.

I watched Scott Lycett yesterday and:

Height - yes
Mobility - yes
Ball Skill - yes
Intensity - no
Drop of the head in a marking contest - yes, more than once.
First draft pick for us - NO.

Please can we draft him with one of our second round picks? As an early christmas present. Please???
Jack has been tipped at going Top 3 this year to the GC, if he doesnt he should definately be Top 10.

The only thing, he is a bit too short for a KPP and has been beaten on a couple of occasions by taller players this year. May slide from the Top 3, but doubt it will be as far as Round 2.

Yeah, his potential for further growth is something you'd want to know. If he's peaked, then that is too short for key forward.

Even at that height though, you'd have to peg him as a good option to follow a Michael Firrito type path, whereby he can monster any midfielder you'd care to name and still be a decent mark in a pinch. Or shit, get his fitness up and he could just be a big clearing midfielder (Anthony Morabito could be another example).

Definitely the most interesting prospect this year, and I think that potential height deficiency (and behaviour issue) makes his projected draft position very iffy.

Have you seen anything of Ben Casley? Looks like a real goer to me. Already has a strong body, captain of the Jets so must have some leadership ability. I saw footage of his first VFL game and he looked like he belonged by the end of that game. Got a few goals and took some really strong contested marks.

At 189 cm and 86 kgs he could have the makings of a strong bodied midfielder along the lines of Moore and Broadbent.

I like Paul Puopolo 2/12/87 from Norwood. Tough footballer and with good pace and aggression. Will only be 23 next season, so a nice age, and I think is worth a spot on the senior list.
Only con is his height at 175cm.

If we get Darling with a 2nd rd pick it will be drop pants time!

I suppose with his latest incident (being assaulted) his stocks may drop but I cant see a previously rated top 5 kid dropping to the thirties. I'll keep hoping though.

I'd be surprised if Darling made it past the first round. The wraps on him in Western Australia are enormous.

I think Darling will slide a long way from where he was rated last year, simply because his true AFL position will be under question. I wouldnt be surprised to see him in the 2nd round.

i feel he will slide out of the top ten, but not the next ten. 191cm isnt that short. plus he finds alot of the ball for a forward as well. could go anywhere from gc pick 11, melb pick 12 would be very likely,gc13,15, maybe even us than roos would jump, if not carlton. roos need someone like him, so do carlton would both jump doesnt slip further than that. imo gc will risk melb and adel and take him at pick 15.

btw, ive said before i want us to take a mid but if we pick this kid up i wont cry. very good talent for pick 16.

Re: Video and info on draft candidates

Paul Daffey gave his top ten picks for the draft combine. Interesting that Atley is rated higher than Brodie Smith and Smith is not in the top 10.

Another handy player would be Caddy. Will never get him but he is exactly the type of mid we need.

Re: Video and info on draft candidates

Man if we get brodie smith, I'll be stoked.

Bet the Crows will nab him just before us hahaha

Watch his highlights and watch where the ball actually goes once he has it. I am not really sold on his awareness of other players.

Port nominated pick 16 for Mitch Wallis, forcing the Bulldogs to use their first-round pick to get him under father-son. Doggies also used their second round pick to f-s Tom Liberatore (Swans pulled the trigger on that one).

Daffey's bumped it up to 25, has Lycett at 16. Smith at 13.

Nearly every phantom draft has us taking Lycett at 16 - pure laziness and lack of interest in us.

Can't see it happening, particularly when we passed up chasing Jacobs.

Re: Operation Get Brodie Smith & Jared Polec!!!

Paul Daffey has done his top 25 draft prospects. This is his list and I have included his take on the couple of top SA kids and from 8 onwards as this about who might fall to us. Interesting that Lycett seems to be in the ball park for us for a lot of these phantom drafts. Everything I read was he was top 10. Lots of mids and small forwards and defenders.

Top 25 Draft prospects

1. David Swallow (East Fremantle):

2. Harley Bennell (Peel):

3. Sam Day (Sturt): Is a key forward who takes hangers and kicks 60 metres without effort. His potential is enormous considering he's never dedicated himself to footy.

4. Andrew Gaff (Oakleigh Chargers):

5. Dyson Heppell (Gippsland Power):

6. Jared Polec (Woodville-West Torrens): Is a smooth wingman who can break away from a pack and boot 60 metres on his left foot. He performed well at senior level in finals and plays like a better Clinton Young.

7. Josh Caddy (Northern Knights):

8. Daniel Gorringe (Norwood): Is an intelligent ruckman who's still growing and is the type of player you can build a team around.

9. Tom Lynch (Dandenong Stingrays): Is a key forward who takes strong marks, is Nick Riewoldt-like in his endurance and has really leapt up the rankings since mid-season.

10. Shaun Atley (Murray Bushrangers): Is a speedy midfielder who would help solve the Brisbane Lions' pace problems. He has a great attitude and a Michael Voss-like determination.

11. Billie Smedts (Geelong Falcons): Tested well across all disciplines at the draft combine, runs straight and can play in any position.

12. Kieran Harper (Eastern Ranges): Is a richly-talented forward who runs to the beat of his own drum. His brilliance would complement the Demons’ hard-working young midfielders.

13. Brodie Smith (Woodville-West Torrens): Is a hard-running midfielder and flanker who breaks lines and would help provide leadership to a young group.

14. Ben Jacobs (Sandringham Dragon): Is a half-forward and half-back who performed well in the kicking test at the draft combine. He is thought to have improvement in him.

15. Pat McCarthy (Glenelg): Is a tall defender who plays more of a running role than a key-position role and would be another handy leader for a young group.

16. Scott Lycett (Port Adelaide Magpies): Is a hard-working ruckman who contests at stoppages and runs into space to provide a link. He is a known quantity at Alberton.

17. Jed Lamb (Gippsland Power): Is a small forward who would provide badly needed cheek and class to the Roos' line-up. He put in an almost perfect performance in the kicking test at the draft combine.

18. Jack Darling (West Perth): Is a rambunctious forward who makes his presence felt and would alleviate the Blues' pain at losing Aaron Hamill a decade ago.

19. Seb Tape (Sturt): Is a dedicated defender you could build a team around. He would complement Ben Stratton in a developing Hawks backline.

20. Cameron Guthrie (Calder Cannons): Is a strong-minded midfielder who would push Ryan Crowley out of the Dockers' line-up. He kicked a few goals in the TAC Cup finals.

21. Luke Parker (Dandenong Stingrays): Is a midfielder whose standing dipped mid-year but returned again during the TAC Cup finals. He is a top leader and good inside and outside.

22. Tom Liberatore (Calder Cannons): Is an inside midfielder who is leaner and faster than his father Tony, but just as hungry. He is a solid father-son pick.

23. Mitch Hallahan (Dandenong Stingrays): Is a midfielder whose boxing credentials lend an edge. He is an impressive leader and has a great work ethic. He played injured late in the TAC Cup season.

24. Pat Karnezis (Oakleigh Chargers): Is a talented half-forward with x-factor who leads forward and back. He has only just given up soccer for footy.

25. Jamie Cripps (East Fremantle): Is a sure ball-handler with endurance who has kicked goals in senior footy this season. He is from the same area as Tarkyn Lockyer.
