We need an angry coach... way too many soft players at our club (physically and even more so mentally).

As much as I like Cara, I haven't seen anything in regards to our offensive ball movement that tells me he should be in charge of the broader playing group. If he really wanted the job, he wouldn't have pissed off overseas and then expected us to wait for him. He feels like a jaded character for mine, and wouldn't bring enough mongrel into the playing group.

Gia can't coach defenders, and needs to leave that assistant role. Could still be part of the coaching panel as a fwd/mid/specialist, but don't feel he can coach at a senior level yet.

You would've thought Chris Scott basking in glory would stir an itch with Brad, but he has the comfiest job in the AFL. I reckon he would be torn. He is exactly the type of coach we need though: someone who gets fired up. All the great coaches, even the modern day ones, get angry ... Woosha and Rutten were too nice. In partial fairness to Woosha, he had to mollycoddle the playing group through the supplement saga which took priority over winning.

Hird needs more time as an assistant coach before we welcome him back. Preferably at a club with a stronger culture than GWS. Heppell, Langford, Merrett and Laverde the last players from the 2015 list who played under him, so we've probably turned over enough of the list since he left in case there was any lingering ill will. Heppell the last of the "34".

Yze ... quite the CV but honestly don't know enough about his impact. Defensive coach of Hawthorn mid-way through the three-peat, but was he just continuing what Beveridge and Clarkson already started? Luke Hodge was practically coaching the backline by the time he arrived. Midfield coach at Melbourne. Some credit there, but after years of failed high-ranking draft picks you felt the Dees had to get lucky at some point and they did with Petracca and Oliver.

We lauded Rutten for his defensive work at Richmond and look at how that failed us. Yze does strike me as more tactically minded than Rutten, but that's a low base.

My vote is with Brad Scott, but he needs to want it. We're a more resourceful club than North so that should entice him.

Excellent summary.

Agree with everything you have said there.

My heart was on Hird early, but yeah, I think he needs another stint as assistant. Collingwood would be an excellent choice if he could get in.

Scott ticks many boxes.

  • No nonsense blue collar footy pedigree
  • Strong ties with the AFL & umpiring fraternity
  • Not too long out of the game coaching wise.
  • Has the experience.
  • Didn't take a backward step as a player or coach.
  • Was able to make tough decisions regarding senior players at North.
  • Probably overachieved with the list he had at North.

Is Scott happy to lead us into a 3/4 year rebuild is the question. The playing list has holes everywhere. Can we get the players to conform to a gameplan?

Now you're just asking too much.

An educated guess would tell you that Yze has been the favourite from the get go. I very much doubt Hird was ruled out of the job a week ago like you said.

Scooter who is pretty well connected said last night - Cant share everything I was told but i thought personally myself Yze was 90% likely to get the job tbh and realising its quite more open and not as obvious as I thought.

Either way, no decision has been made and not every applicant has even applied. All "X has the job" posts and vice versa are rubbish.
Even if Yze is recommended by the panel, the board are consumed with Hird they still are required to approve. The Hird flywheel is alive and well trust me.

They could, in theory. They certainly have that right.

But if they did disregard the panel’s recommendation — the panel they put together and charged with selecting the next coach — they could have no expectation of respect in future. Whatever is left of their integrity goes straight in the bin.

My question mark with Brad Scott comes out of some of the talk on his ability to develop younger players to fit into the senior side more long term seems to have been one of his issues at North. I wonder if he may be a coach that could get us into finals even win one that can develop younger players too be less inclined to play favorites

I probably like the idea of Yze if Williams came with him, I think Chocco could lay down the law a little while Yze finds his feet (and maybe something like that would have helped Rutten)

Gee whiz so now you need to yell at everyone to be a tough coach. The game has moved past that type of coach. EFC on field leaders are conditional in every aspect. Unfortunately the game left Heppell, no power or penetration in his game. Merrett wants to be CEO, just concentrate on winning a clearance Zac. Kidding themselves if they appoint him as captain, poor communication with our young players that is fact. Parish all out attack, won’t embrace role. Stringer conditional with standard’s, these guys are role modelling high standards. Don’t think so. Get McGrath and Redman into the leadership positions asap and give them ownership. Start by becoming a good club and treating people with respect. You can’t snatch at success anymore BOMBERS.

Given what Geelong just did, you don’t seem to need to develop young players. Or at least only a handful. The rest you can poach.

Angry is probably the wrong word, but competitive, with high standards, uncompromising and ready to drop players who don’t meet those standards is a fairly standard refrain here on the Essendon board. Our fans have been saying it for years.

A lot of the players Geelong poach are from Geelong. That gives them a big advantage over other clubs in Victoria.
Or if not from Geelong then from the Bellarine, Surf Coast or Western District - players from all of these regions will be keen to play at Geelong.

It’s a great competitive advantage for them and they use it brilliantly.

Fair point. But not sure we the drawcard to bring in players. that can do that.

Without looking too deeply into Geelong how well to they develop players that are already there that can just take the step up. No doubt that is partly culture, player driven. They have been very good at the cats at trading in players.

Guess we will find out in a week which way they go.

Acting like a competent, professional football club would be a good start 😝 Geelong weren't always like they are now - 20 years ago they had 6 premierships to their name and the most recent one was in the 1960s.

Brian Cook became their CEO in 1999 after two flags at West Coast, oversaw 3 flags at Geelong (and the build for today's flag). As of 12 months ago he's now working for Carlton.

Like I have said in the past, even though Schnitzengruben keeps loling my posts. I have heard bits and pieces but I’m not 100%. The latest I have heard is that Yze has the job.

But like I said, I could also be wrong. Not correct in response to that post is a poor choice of words.
Fair enough
i think people who really know don’t spill the beans as a rule of thumb
