Hird was known as shy prior to him playing AFL and has always said he’s never felt fully comfortable with people idolising him.

He recently was not even 100% sure the crowd were cheering him prior to the Carlton match this year, which goes to show his state of mind because it was clear it was a rousing show of applause and cheering for him.

I have known a few people who were famous in their industry that were shy and simply avoided fans because they had no idea what to say to them and didn’t feel worthy of that idolisation.

Now, it would still be better of James not to ignore fans, plenty of other shy players have learnt to deal with it, but pointing out there are a number of reasons he might do so that aren’t so bad.

There is shy and being an ass. I am not talking about days where there where hundreds of people. I have been there and seen him walk straight past a kid who wanted nothing more than a hello. Like I said he is a decent bloke. I have met him in the past and he has been okay but my real point was people can be a bit indifferent at times. People watch Cameron in the Amazon clip and only see him in a year they are under the pump after making a GF and dealing with covid bubbles which effected some clubs very badly compared to some others. It was not a great look but it was football club under pressure and it happens.

Yze putting his hand up and actually sounding really keen is fantastic, given his connections to Lewis and Mahoney he has to be in pole position, doesn’t he?

It would certainly be very interesting if the review and the process spit out that the off field and footy department needed a great big broom through it and the best man for the job was a team defense savant, first time head coach from a successful footy program.

Would almost be a tacit admission that Rutten was right place at the absolute worst time.

I wonder if we’ve finalised his payout yet. Last we heard he was technically still employed at Essendon

Im not at all suggesting a reunion, if that’s what you’re suggesting but if I recall correctly player employment contracts officially run until October 1, perhaps coaching ones are the same?

I was but not seriously 😝

Even if it was it’d be October 1 2023. Paying him for September or paying him out for September makes little difference, although the pay out can be staged so it might be more about the soft cap or the lack of CEO than anything.

Yeah agree with all of that.

I don’t buy much into the Cameron thing based on the doco, those things are set to be more dramatic.

I simply don’t rate Cameron as a coach worth chasing.

Leon Cameron's response to the media was much classier than Lyons. Cameron may not have been the best option anyway, but he handled himself well and respectfully. Lyon on the other hand....

Sold. Bring him in.
The only problem is the younger generation doesn't like being spoken to like that.

That was the issue Noble had, it is easy to lose players who are just too soft for a spray then all of a sudden you get the sack.

The only coaches that can operate with an uncompromising approach, are those that can also be a good friend or people person to the different individuals.
Similar to Clarkson, Hardwick or Beverage.
Coaches who can't be both now don't last long.
Coaches who are nothing but tough on the players are long gone these days.

But he didn’t prove to be a team defence savant. He had four years to implement a team defence game plan and never got near it. Some people are assistant coaches and some are head coaches. Rutten is probably a good assistant. We need someone who can pick the club up and say follow me boys. This is the way we do it. Scott, Pyke, Choco and Hird all have premiership credentials as players or coach.
Yze may be good but I don’t know that we can take that risk of a first year head coach.

He’s always been aloof. Always.

He was a good defensive coach with a good idea about it. To say we never got near it is wrong. There where times when we did actually show signs of improvement. In the end his plan was right IMO. He just did not have the ability to sell it and maybe he pushed too hard early to put a plan on a playing group that could not do it and lacked the on field leadership to drive it.
Yze may be different. At least he will be a fresh message.

My position on that hasn’t changed, he didn’t have tools. Shit list, unfit list, list without maturity and leadership, backroom shit undermining him.

Like I said, if the review makes those findings and recommendations that those things need rectifying for us to push forward that is almost absolution for Rutten in a way.

The only real reason I can see for people to be advocating for someone like Hird, Scott, Lyon or Pyke is because Rutten tried to bring us out of the Stone Age and implement something really current and we all got a bit spooked by how far away we actually are. Yze the standout candidate for mine.
