It's an example. Dew is considered a good coach on a good trajectory.

Hird is an example of what it looks like when a coach wins games as opposed to waiting for an AFL handed glut of first round picks to come good. That's buy in. It certainly doesn't mean perfection. Matthew Nicks is another example of getting buy in with, in this case poor results.

Hird got 11.5, 11 and 14 wins in his first 3 years with a bad list that grew into something reasonable as the likes of Hooker and Carlisle came on. The midfield was horrible.

In 2013 I reckon raw emotion probably gains a win or 2 but then also cost a few or at least resulted is a few fade outs or pummellings. All things considered it was a solid on field year.

It doesn't mean our list was becoming amazing, it's not proof Hird was a coaching genius. To add some other context, Brad Scott, who I respect, has a best H&A season of 14-8.

It's significant because he is being treated as though those seasons never happened. People want to hold up a guy being an assistant for 11 years as though it means more than jack s**t when compared to Hird's actual experience that checks boxes.
then there's 2015... we got cooney, stopped playing youth. that terrible midfield never improved. elephant in the room, no?

alex browne, kurt aylett, and lachy dalgleish were running round in the 2s. howlett and gwilt were playing in the 1s.

And if that was the be all and end all he won't get an interview.

I assume he can explain it all. I wouldn't agree with those explanations but if politics meant he didn't pick kids when I think he should of done so does that override everything else? Not unless I then ask him about how he would approach things now and the answer indicates he would do the same.

The club did make calls to try to get feel good stories. We know this impacted list management in 2016 and 2017.

Good on him if he is…I want the process to be followed and the panel’s recommendation to be followed. If Hird legitimately wins that process wouldn’t you want him to be hired?

I want whoever wins the process and is recommended by the panel.
On what grounds could Hird come out on top of the selection process? He's been out of it longer than Ross Lyon, and even he seems to have lost his edge.

IMO if he wants to be a senior coach again he can go and do his time as an assistant in some good systems, maybe coach a VFL side to a couple of flags. If he's any good it should be obvious at that point and we wouldn't be at risk of another 5 years of mediocrity while we find out the hard way.

i dont disagree with any points specifically. just that, i don't think the mess hird left this club in (as head coach rightly or wrongly you're considered the top dog in most things) was worth his mediocre on field efforts. hence, i don't want him back.

All of this has been discussed ad nauseam.

But it’s not my point. I’m not saying I want Hird to win the process. I’m saying good for him if he wants to apply. I want whoever is selected under a proper process by the panel to be hired. It probably won’t be Hird, but if it is then he is who should be hired.

If we put Hird in that will pretty much be it for me I reckon.

You'd think that the only way Hird could get it though is if he's been practicing his magic tricks and he makes all the other candidates disappear.
