You don't need a title to be a leader.

All that person will do is call heads or tails at the coin toss.

Whether you are appointed captain or not for the game, just do exactly the same out on the field as you would if Johnno was playing.

I think supporters get too hung up on the notion of a captain, as Butane says.

Also think it ironic that people bag someone for not kicking a goal at a crucial time, yet the bloke that is the captain has had the chance to win us the game on 2 occasions after the siren & has missed both times, yet we all laud him as a leader.

I really do think Gia is harshly marked on here at times.

Agree with your comment about Gia mate, he is a friggin gun. But you just shot Bambi. Johnno has been a great leader for the club, inspirational over a very long period of time. Remember when he was our only forward option and would still kick goals.

That aside, I would love to see the Captaincy go to Boyd. I love that bloke.

I wasn't having a crack at Johnno & agree with your comments about him as a leader.

I was using as a point to illustrate the perception some posters have when they use the example of Gia missing a goal last week & sticking the knife in by claiming a captain should kick that goal, but because its not Gia in Johnno's case his 2 misses can be conveniently ignored.

I agree that leadership is much more then a title. I'm not and never have bagged Gia and rate him very highly as a player but dont feel he leads the team as a capatin. IMO a captain is a guy that gives there all every week every minute of that game and that is one thing we have had from Johno and need going forward.
Another guys that fits this profile is Morris, doenst matter how good the guys if he plays on or how many goals get kicked he will give effort time after time.

True in some way Coon but Johnno has shown lots of leadership over the years so get a few credits

Guido could have made a statement on Friday night but didnt

By slotting a goal from 20 meters out? Wasn't he trying to pass it over the top to the player free in the goal square?

Passes it off - leadership quality
kicks it in to the man on the mark - no understanding of leadership qualities.

Ah meh, it's pointless trying to depend that poor play but I really really truly believe that the captain title is over-rated. You need leaders everywhere..

Harley, Mooney, Bartel, Ablett, Milburn, Scarlett, oh and their current captain, Ling...shit even Mackie stands at the top of his defensive 50's yelling at players to get in to position.

You need a leadership group in this day and age and the more the better.

Teams know this. Otherwise they'd just making a mighty ducks flying V around their captain and hope he can win the game for them.

Hehe, the only reason Gia didn't go back and take a set shot was because THE CAPTAIN was calling for the ball in the goal square instead of telling him to go back and take a set shot.

I think it is only fair that BOTH PLAYERS are relieved of their leadership positions.

(But seriously, after Gia did the first three games, if he doesn't get it tomorrow night it could be seen as a vote of no confidence in him, which could lead to instability bla bla bla GIA WILL BE CAPTAIN TOMORROW NIGHT AMEN).

What a beat-up about nothing. Guido was just one of many who could have won the game on Friday. And he contributed a lot more than Johnno on this occasion.

Anyway Guido DID make http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/season2010/news/newsarticle/tabid/4112/newsid/93396/default.aspxa statement on Friday night - it's reported here.

Gia will be captain. It's not open to dispute. Maybe someone else will take the coin toss if it's a milestone but there isn't any that i know of. If Gia and Johnno were both out then I would assume that Morris would be the captain. He is held in high regard around the place, for good reason.

I know off-field has a lot to do with it as well, but if a captain was picked solely by what's shown on-field I would've thought Boyd would be the next obvious choice. I'm generally on the pro-Gia side, but just think Boyd shows more of the qualities on-field that I'd like other players to aspire to.

Yes, it's just a title and you don't need to be captain to be a leader, but every player would be honoured to be named captain. And the player most deserving should get it.
