Will Brisbane Trade for Raines?

150 posts & some strong thoughts on the recruitment of Raines & not 1 mention of the Craig McCrae connection - interesting.

Not sure how many people up North saw Raines play in the VFL this season. Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion but just what they are based on is interesting. Bit like me suddenly becoming an expert on the QAFL, yet have not seen 1 game all season.

It is fair to say Raines isn't in Richmond's plans, I am happy to have him at the club as long as it doesn'tcost us a top 50 pick.

Or at least not one we'd use anyway, if we go down the "bugger all selections" route.

3aw rumour file suggests that Raines has already signed a 3 year deal with the Gold Coast as their second major signing.

Happy with that. Not sure that we want or need his style.

After seeing how well Hawksely played last night I am now dead against picking up Raines next season. I'd really like to see Hawksely play round 1 next season and hopefully play all 22 games.

Also have Collier waiting to make his mark at AFL level.

Second? Sorry I missed their first major signing. Who was it?

Would be surprised if this was the case on 2 counts.

1. Raines is contracted to Richmond until Oct 31st. He cannot sign with another club unless he is delisted at first or second list lodgements. This has not occured. He may have an agreement, like the one suggested in The Austrlalian a couple of days ago that himself, Richmond and Brisbane has a verbal understanding a trade would take place in trade week, but nothing would be set in stone.

2. It would mean he would not be playing AFL for a year. He has already said he does not want to 'rot' in the VFL and had looked into the Gold Coast option and dismissed it as it would mean him playing for them in this comp in 2010.

All signs still point to a Brisbane move in trade week.

I hope he takes a good hard look at our playing list. He will be playing QAFL for a while IMO.

If true, i'm not happy.

Where would we play him? It's like Collingwood picking up Corrie when they already had Medhurst, Didak, Davis, Lockyer, and Thomas. Except they used pick 91.

We have Drummond, Adcock, Macdonald, McGrath, Collier, Hawksley, Selwood, and Austin among others to play on a half-back flank.

Raines is too slow and has too poor a kick to displace any of them.

You guys seriously need to look back at what this kid is capable of before you write him off so much.

Agree completely wth this - Raines at his best (remember his rising star season?) would easily be in our best 22.

If he doesn't though... enjoy the QAFL Andrew

As has been said already, if its a 3rd or 4th pick we are giving up for him, he probably isn't going to be any more of a gamble than a draftee from a 3rd or 4th pick this year. Atleast he is a little bit older, and could be a depth player covering injuries at worse. At best, he does what many other players do when they change clubs and turns it on.

Im not for, or against the trade. I think it may depend on other potential trades.

Spot on. Could be an interesting trade period

IMO you've got it wrong there Warwick. Raines is definitely quicker than than a couple you've named and I don't think his kicking is any worse than a couple of those blokes either. Of course he's not exactly another Nigel Lappin but I think he would give us a bit more pace out of the back line.

He was runner up in the Rising Star to Danyle Pearce in 2006 and he was pretty good in 2007 but his career at Richmond has just stalled. He's had some injury issues including a dislocated kneecap and there seems to have been a falling out with the coaching staff somewhere along the way. With the past couple of years Richmond had under Wallace why would that come as a surprise?

Trading that 3rd round selection for him might be worth the punt because I reckon Michael Voss would work wonders with him. Look at how good Ash McGrath has been this year.

I know that we have to take a minimum of 3 from the draft - which most people are saying isn't going to be all that strong - so if we offload that pick via a trade does that mean we then only need take 2?

Jemima, we would still have to take a minimum of 3 picks, although the rules have changed this year to allow rookie elevations to count as picks.

Surely the question is

.. is he any good ? Forget the Tiger hype .. anyone with any connection to the Golden Age gets a gig.

I don't see any good stuff recently. Who was the last player we overlooked for a high draft pick ? Let's not do that again.

Trouble is, we dont know.
Its all a bit of an unknown as far as Raines trade goes. I haven't seen any quotes from Vossy himself, so have to wait n see how it plays out.

A point worth considering - if this goes ahead, the Lions would want to be sure there's no history between Raines and Rawlings or McRae.

We don't want to import existing problems from Richmond.

good point BB - surely Vossy would have canvassed the 'which players would you bring to Brisbane in terms of cost/benefit?' question with both Rawlings and McRae

if Raines comes to Brisbane then I'll support it

with those two asst coaches providing input, there'll be very little guesswork involved in Raines' aquisition...it will be a calculated move on Vossy's part and I'm willing to have faith in his first trade call

peace
