Will Brisbane Trade for Raines?

There are contributors here who clearly know a lot more detail about this bloke than me, but FWIW I recall him as a pacy, elusive halfback who seemed to be part of the anticipated Tigers renewal [which never happened].

As much as I ever thought about Raines, I always regarded him as one of those many talented Queenslanders who escaped our recruiting grasp.

If we have people out there who are prepared to seriously consider a totally washed up Russell Robertson [please!!!] etc then surely we should look at a 23yo who may have simply fallen out with the coaches at Richmond for whatever good or bad reason. We all know there are stories behind the stories- reference TJ for example.

Can't we look at neither. ;)

You could move Adcock into the Midfield he has done well there before.

He is 23... not like he is some old washed up player.

With respect to your comments, If I may retort "Your are way off mark"
Jed was not as successful in the midfield as people try to portray. More of wishful expectations rather than reality. Jed's best position was and many of us believe is, as the backline general. Moving him into the midfield exposes our defence rather than strengthening our midfield.

I would rather us continue along the lines of developing and cultivating our own and avoid taking others' rejects.

On this one I am firmly in the NO camp.

I would much rather get more games into Sheldon and Hawksley then give Raines another chance. These two players will be 10 year players at our club and all Raines will be doing is costing them an oppurtunity.

The way I see it is if Raines is costing them an opportunity then it means he is a better player than them, which means the trade will have been a success.

Hawksley > Raines.

Hawksley receiving the handball from Redden and then hitting Bradshaw 45 metres away on the chest off two steps was stunning.

I have my doubts that Raines can do that.

Off topic, but that passage of play was the single most satisfying / exciting moment for me across the entire season (with about 37 Rich passes ranking equal second). Seeing all of our young gens simply willing the ball forward in our time of need was just magic.

Same, it all starts from when Polks smashes in to Judd. :thumbsu:

I am not saying I know more about what Jed is capable off than you guys do but I think if injury wasn't such a huge issue for him he would be there. As he is a constant in my Dream Team I watched him and his early season form was just a tad off and wasn't handling the ball cleanly... then he had that game against Roos and really looked to have a cracker.

He is quick, solid, great tackler, understands the game I see no reason why he wont become a good mid with a full season under his belt. If I were you I would be looking at the recruitment of Raines as a chance to free up Jed.

I agree with all of this, I think you guys are being a bit hard on Richmond FC here.

Nah.

Brisbane are not a good clearance side, and we rely on scoring most of our goals from defensive rebounds.

We need skill out of defence, not shanks. Raines down back doesn't give us flexibility, it gives us worries.

Adcock is good in the middle, but great in the backline. He is just too valuable down there to move. He still pushes up to the middle playing from the back. Just dont see the point in forcing a player who is so good playing a position into another position to fit in someone else who is unproven.

For the record im not against the Raines trade, at very least he will add a little more depth, but he will have to fight to get a start in the team. Some players totally transform themselves changing clubs, lets hope Raines lives up to his potention and forces his way into our 22.

Off topic too. That was the most intense 30 odd seconds of footy I have ever seen. I sit in s11, right on that flank, and have honestly never, ever seen a arm wrestle for the footy like it.

Initially thought that Hawksley had just popped it on the boot and hoped (no one could blame him if that was what he did), but the replay when I got home showed a different story. The composure was just awesome:thumbsu:

On topic, I am well and truely in the :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu: for getting Raines. Worth the risk, we have drafted well for the last few years, and can afford a risk like this in what is said to be a shallow draft.

What chance he wears number 4??:p

The issue is can he become the player he looked to have the potential to be. If so we would be close to having the best defensive rebounding team in the league.

Brisbane have the best or one of the best development programs around.

Raines has talent.

For a speculative pick, pick 44, it's about a win-win, and Vossy might bring out the best in Raines. He is a tough little bugger, very good tackler, his only down fall is his kicking skills. He tends to kick them up and under when he tries to pin point the passes, but he can kick it a very long way.

Had a few injury problems in the past couple of years, but wasn't happy with the club from about the mid way point of the season. He truly believes he is a midfielder and wasn't too happy with Wallace and his treatment of him playing on the likes of Nick Riewoldt. Yep, Wallace destroyed most things at our club. Imagine, playing Raines on Riewoldt. He was a moron.

I would have backed Hardwick do bring out the good in Raines, now I truly believe Voss will be able too. Whether that is as a midfielder who knows, but he will be a solid addition to your squad.

Helps as well that Gubby Allan is very good mates and has some business interests with Geoff Raines. :D;)

Good luck for the rest of the finals, I will be cheering you on! :thumbsu:

Probably a win for both in the end, perhaps could of got away with a 4th rounder but you guys obviously decided you wanted him and better to wrap it up with a trade than run the risk of someone else taking him. Think it could work out, the kid is a terrible kick but the rest of his game(especially his evasive skills) is quite good, will fit in a lot better in a team full of blokes who can actually kick the ball coming out of defense, the problem with us is the rest of the team is shit kicks as well.

Nah, if anything no.40 - didn't his brother Nick wear 40 when a rookie with the Lions a few years ago?

People will go....we have to free up probably 5 spots on the list.

The story in the Australian seems definite about Raines - I''m philosophical about it - If Raines gets back to his best form and improves....it's a coup - if he doesn't well..though we have done well recently with third round picks, picking up a player who does not make it is always on the cards.
