If I had to guess and I have no clue really I think it might be a Haws vs Cats GF.
The reason I say this is that we are two teams who have created very specific and very different gameplans ...
We have gone small and you tall (very basic description).
Plus the way it is shaping up, Swans aside, most of the teams in the 8 will have very little finals experience.

Hard to read a lot from last night's game, it was an extremely soft kill.

They looked slow and were completely rattled for a quarter. Early in the second Port had it it inside 50 for very little reward. Very strong defence from the Cats during that period. Lonergan and Taylor are killing it.

I think that's partly correct. I think two points of the first 45-50 minutes of Saturday night's game are being completely ignored by most people:
  • Geelong missed several gettable set-shots in the first quarter. If not for some pretty poor accuracy at goal, it would have been a lot closer at quarter time. In general, the rest of the stats were pretty even at the time; Geelong's players just didn't have their kicking boots on.
  • Geelong didn't immediately dominate after the quarter time melee. Port was on top for a fair while and had the ball in an attacking position for a long time, but the Cats' defence held up. Selwood's goal (the first of the quarter) didn't come until there was about eight minutes left (from memory), then all hell broke loose
From there Geelong looked lethal, but shit, Port put in one of the worst performances I've seen in long, long time. Insipid.

Maybe so, but I think there's a fair bit to be said for coming into a hostile environment like that, with the fans and opposition players out for blood, coming back from a four goal deficit and dishing out an absolute hiding at the final siren. I think it says a bit about our players' character.

They've only played two decent teams and they are 1-1. At the end of the day though they are 4-1 and that goes a long way towards finals.

I think that's a bit simplistic. If GWS is a decent team, then so is Gold Coast (whom we come up against next). Everyone is pencilling that in as a win for Geelong, right? As far as I'm concerned, if anyone said heading in to this week that GWS in Canberra was more of a test than Port at Adelaide Oval, they would have been told that they needed their heads read.

Their fixture isnt quite as soft as predicted... Double u games v GWS, Adelaide an the dogs... These teams are all stronger than predicted pre season

Based on what? Collingwood and GWS bolted out of the blocks last year as well, then they fell in a heap. What makes you convinced about those teams, but not about Geelong?

Ah yes! But our talls can play small whereas your smalls cannot play tall!! Hope it happens as you say..good luck!!

I'm happy about that to be honest. Crows showed last year what happens when you get an armchair ride to the finals.

Seriously, we were drawn to play your lot twice (2014 finalist and were top 4 in 2014), Port twice (2014 PF), West Coast (became 2015 GF) and will grant both Brisbane and Gold Coast. Not sure will classify as an armchair ride.

I don't think they're a top 4 team. I see a semi final as their ceiling. Swans, Roos, Hawks, Crows are my top 4. The Cats are there with the Eagles as a 2nd tier team. I see 5th-8th as their place.

Based on what I've seen... Both Adelaide and GWS are playing better than most people predicted, its not a ground breaking statement.

I think you're being a little defensive and over-sensitive here.

I'm not getting in to an argument with you over the rest of your post because its just semantics. You seem to be knit picking my opinions and again, being a little over defensive.

Just observations dude.

Genuine question, how have Adelaide proven themselves to be a better side than Geelong this year?

We've played the Top 3 teams, beaten one and lost two by under a goal.

You've beaten Hawthorn in Round 1 (fantastic performance) and then lost to GWS. You've then beaten premiership contenders Brisbane, Essendon and Port.

I guess we find out in a fortnight.

You can only play who is in front of you. Think we have played fantastic footy at times and looked lost at others, and the same goes for Adelaide.

My biggest wrap on the Crows was their defeat of Sydney. Think most of their other games were about on par with my expectations of them though. They certainly have a strong group, but their defence IMO is their weakest part of the ground; this is an area where I can give Geelong definite plaudits, but am a bit iffy on the Crows backline. We will see come Round 8 I guess.

Some people have no idea!
Your only good win was against Sydney and it was on your home deck.

Your Port win again on your home deck has proven to be not that Impressive, and Richmond are just plain shit.

You lost to Hawthorn admittedly you got close, but Geelong beat them comfortably and The Bulldogs and Saints got just as close as you.

You can Score well with the second highest attack in the AFL which looks spectacular, but you have conceded on average 100pts a game which is higher than any top 8 side showing you are leaky at the back.

So yes we need you to elaborate, what exactly has Adelaide proven to say they are better then Geelong, The Bulldogs, West Coast or any of the 8 sides currently above them on the ladder?

Neither side has really proven anything. You'd suggest that our performances against the Top 3 teams have been impressive but like you said, you beat Hawthorn. We'll see what happens.

Looks that way to the naked eye. It's round 5 so it isn't fact yet.

I disagree. Adelaide has fantastic attack - I think the best in the competition - but have not shown particular defensive prowess.
Geelong's defence looks just as exceptional, based on what we have seen. Their attack however, has been suspect. The squiggle attests to this for both clubs.

I think there are a couple of issues here. We as humans display a wonderful cognitive bias - that being that we perceive teams who ostensibly are out performing expectation as better than those who are underperforming expectation.

Geelong was rated heavily in the preseason, and as such until they comprehensively prove to be at that rated level, people will perceive them to be worse than they are. The inverse is true of Adelaide. I think there is also the unfortunate fact of Schadenfreude - It seems pretty clear that most Adelaide supporters hope Geelong fail and vice versa.

I would say, only 5 rounds in, that both Adelaide and Geelong have a lot left to prove. That being said I think it is fair to call both top 4 threats.
