At the time of the Sloane on Ebert incident, I really didn't think there was much in it (seemed a legitimate attempt to spoil resulting in accidental contact to Ebert's face), but considering there was contact to the head with a clenched fist, I think this is worth talking about.

The MRP will have to decide firstly whether the conduct was intentional or careless. To me, it's a no brainer that it was unintentional and therefore careless, but you can never be too sure when dealing with panels comprised largely of idiots.

From there, they'll have to decide if the impact was low or medium, or if it was too low to constitute a reportable offence. This is far less clear cut. High impact is out of the question - it's a rare grading reserved for Steven May type hits that knock blokes out cold. Personally I think "low" is probably the most appropriate, but blood gushing out of a cheek may influence them to go with medium.

Because contact was clearly to the head, the sanction from there takes care of itself as follows:

Intentional and medium = 3 weeks down to 2 with early guilty plea

Intentional and low = 2 weeks down to 1

Careless and medium = 2 down to 1

Careless and low = $1500 down to $1000

Obviously the 5th option is that it gets thrown out due to insufficient force or being considered purely accidental.

Poll included. I'm going with a $1000 fine but I'm not supremely confident.

Looking at the incident objectively I think it was careless and unintentional but high contact and medium impact (Ebert required stitches but no reported concussion). I so want to say a fine but I suspect he'll get at least a week. Damn it Rory - so unlike you to be so damn careless!

MRP is a bit of a lottery. I don't think there was anything intentional about it, but they tend to not like anything head high. Who knows?

Sloane has a good record and there was no malice intended, although Ebert bled I don't think it warrants a suspension. It was careless really. Ebert played out the game. In my view its not that different to the Port player kicking Smith in the head. Both incidents had players going hard at the ball. The Port crowd are just petty thinking it was a cheap shot.

Sheez I soooo want to agree with you AC. But this is the MRP after all. Its a lottery as someone else said, the head high is undisputed and I doubt they will miss an opportunity to make a 'head high contact' point this late in the season on someone who is likely to poll well in the Brownlow.

I agree with what you're saying, but his record is irrelevant. This changed last year. No discount for good record.

I think low versus medium impact will swing it. Ebert sees Sloane (but perhaps not the fist) in his peripheral vision at the last moment and turns his head toward him which probably made the hit worse than it would have otherwise been.

Obviously we're all a bit bias but there was really nothing in it. Watch it in real time he was very slightly late and it's Sloane, he meant no malice. I'd be disappointed with any games and I think at most a fine is in order.

Ebert's a self-confessed bleeder. If I was on iPad I'd re-post the article quoting him saying that. Impact could be 'glancing' and still open him up. He should be charged with reckless indifference to spilling blood. He'll stick phat at the tribunal and our golden haired Adonis will be free to play next week. Nothing more certain.

6 weeks is my prediction.

If I recall his eyes were off the ball when contact was made....

Was definitely reaching for the spoil. Got him on the chops. Fine.

He jumped with a straight arm and clenched fist a long way off. Intention was never anything but a spoil imho.
No arm swing.
No obvious extra brain damage to Ebert.

Should be a fine only.
