There's nothing wrong with Smith.

No discipline issues, mountain out of a molehill.

Well he's consistently made an effort to screw up when i'm watching. He seem to have a habit of going hard and going late.

I didn't say it was a mountain either.

Yeah I don't think you've watched him enough, watch him for Wesley, hardly puts a foot wrong.

Reckon you've watched him a few times and set an image of the player you think he is, rather than what is actually the case.

He'll stand out as one of "the" talents next season, more so than he did this year.

What is the latest on Cameron McCarthy?

Was his broken leg a quick , clean heal? or did he have complications?

Did he play or train later in the year?

What is the latest buzz surrounding his prospects?

Thanks

It was a compound break, and there has been issues.

Won't hear that out of Souths though, nor from his mates.

Alec is also quite stocky, decent build on him for a 17 year old. I wouldn't call him a classic inside midfielder, as in the whole run in and bulldoze his way through the packs. He is strong in the core and reads the play well though, nice hands in close too. Decent kick on him, probably more towards the average paced though.

All three look like decent prospects - Bevan, Ah Siu and Miller Lewis are the other three from WA who have stood up early too. I'd probably rate Keitel the highest out of the three you mentioned - purely for his size and what he has shown as a KPF. Pickett hasn't quite got the performances on the board consistently yet for me, but has shown a lot of promise. Should be a good year for WA in 2014.
I think Pickett and Keietel will be in the top 20 in next years draft, Pickett on his day is as goood as anyone and still has plenty to learn and Keitel will grow a few more centremetres before next year and be one of the best KPP.

Updated the first page with a new post, looking at some of the misconceptions of the draft. Will look to add to that, as well as a post in which I look for the next Tim Sumner.

Did Cameron Conlon go to the Combine? He looks like a massive talent on his highlights reel.

Yeah, Conlon went to the Combine. I believe he did do some testing, but was still probably somewhat limited with his recovery. I know there has been talk about whether a team will even take the chance with him given his injuries, but I still think he will go early. Someone will jump in the second round.

Timmy Sumner!!

How good was he this year, Chris? He come from the clouds. Had no idea he was going to be that good in his debut year. Just his aggression in the forward line. Sticky hands too.

I was all over Sumner in the lead up to the draft. Rated him very highly, but I didn't expect him to play as much football for the Suns as he did. He was very good. I've got a few similar players lined up for this post, as there has been an increase in that type of player getting taken in the middle rounds lately - Sumner, Ellis-Yolmen, Ah Chee, Hartman. I picked those four, so have to try to keep that going this year.

I really wanted us to take Sumner last year. But even I didn't think he'd have that sort of immediate impact.

If we miss out on McCarthy with our first pick and take a mid I would love us to take the punt on Conlon with our second pick.

I wouldn't be opposed to it either. Even with his injuries, I don't see Cameron Conlon lasting past the third round. Recruiters would have followed his progress throughout the season, and saw what he did early on as a 17 year old. They'd be well aware that had he been fully fit, he wouldn't have made it outside the top 10. It will be a risk worth taking for a lot of clubs. And it will purely be a question of who jumps first and for a team like Fremantle or Hawthorn, it may well need to their second rounder.

The only thing when it comes to Fremantle, is that he is quite similar to Scott Gumbleton. So if we do get him, they may look elsewhere - someone like a Hourigan for example. But if we were to look at Marsh in the first round, then Conlon could be a good pick.

Cheers Chris.

Weird seeing players being mentioned that were born in 1996 and 1997.

I was in prep in 1997.

I was two years out from uni, having finished my masters.

Chris

Looks like EFC will have two live picks at 26 and 55. Think we need a tall ( know we can grab one next year ) Was thinking that Jake K could at least be a third tall. I imagine that he will be available at those picks.

hey chris 25 you have a very good knowledge on next years draft class do you think the options available to brisbane from say around pick 7 to 10 next year would be a better bet than say Mccarthy this year, you have 3 talls rated very highly but theyy will unfortunately be out of the picture asyou said by the time we get a look

thanks

Should be quite a few options really. At 26, I could easily see most of Giles, McStay, Hourigan and Harvey being on the board. With Cutler and Vandeleur being the roughies for that selection. And then in that third round, you'd again have a decent amount of players to choose between - Spencer, Barrass, J Kolodjashnij for example. And then even as rookies, you've got the likes of Le Grice, Redden and Mangan who I think could be decent players to develop.

Obviously it's not the greatest draft for KPPs, but I feel like there are quite a few solid mid/late round options. As I said on the first page, just because the top line quality isn't there, it doesn't mean there isn't some depth.

McCartin and Wright should go top 5. Depending on how he goes in comparison to others (mainly midfielders) then Goddard could be somewhere around the 5-10 mark though. Otherwise, it's McCarthy versus the likes of Lever, Durdin and Watchman.

In terms of how they compare, it's pretty even. Hard to directly compare them too much, what with the underaged kids being exactly that - underaged. So they haven't had the same opportunities as McCarthy to be that #1 guy. But they've all shown good signs. I would probably have Durdin and McCarthy about even, with Lever just behind and Watchman a tad behind him.

The problem is that I wouldn't be taking McCarthy top 10 this year. So in my mind, he wont come into calculations for Brisbane.

May as well ask you for your thoughts on Richard Bourne as well seems you see a fair bit of the WA kids and I've only got snippets from games here and there. Rookie prospect or too skinny?

Rookie draft for me. Of the WA 'smalls', I prefer both Charlie Cameron and Steven Edwards. And not only that, but he is also competing with the likes of Dwayne Wilson, Orazio Fantasia, Jay Kennedy Harris, Brady Grey and Clayton McCartney in the middle to later rounds.

In the lower leagues, I feel like Bourne would have a good impact up the ground on a wing. But not sure that will translate to the AFL, where you need to be two way players. He has a body like Jeff Garlett, which will likely see him remain up forward. In which case, a bit more tackling pressure like his teammate in Cameron would be nice.
