Think Bontempelli will go to GWS at 2.
Sharenberg will go to GC at 6.

Looking at their lists, the both have an abundance of mids - GC are getting Martin and as you say, GWS lack that tall inside type. They will both address needs rather than best available.

Brisbane have a lot of young key forwards around the same mark, not superstar potential, but potential to be solid players. Don't think we'll take any more in the second round, unless someone jumps out at us, since those are the players you generally pick up in that range. Players that fit that mould we currently have are Michael, Lisle, Paparone, Close, Paine and Freeman. Don't think you'd really want to be adding more of the same type of player since it'll throw out the balance of the list.

Be interesting to see who we pick up in the second round. Brisbane bucked the 'Bigfooty' consensus trend a bit picking up Close and Paparone a bit earlier than what most people had on here.

Looking at GWS list, after taking Boyd, they really should be going best genuine midfielder with preferably bigger body. They , like Collingwood have shorter type mids atm.

Industry types seem to be saying Kelly is the man but he just doesn't strike as a Pick 2 to me.

I see GWS going Billings or Bontempelli. They look #2 quality to me.

PS: I think Carlton might go for McCarthy at #13. Do you see anyone beating them to the punch? #13 seems about his right place and God knows Blues have to pull the trigger on a KPF.

As you said, there is fairly strong talk linking Josh Kelly to GWS at #2. And while I personally rate Aish ahead of him, I don't think #2 would be too early for Kelly at all. As I posted above, I rate him in the top tier of this draft - much higher than Jack Billings. The only issue is that I'm not convinced he is the best fit for the Giants, what with some of their recent draftees - Whitfield, O'Rourke, Sumner, Hoskin-Elliot. They would do better with a bigger body - ideally an inside ball winner, but that wont happen this year.

I personally would take Scharenberg if I were GWS though. Simply a case of best available.

And in regards to Cameron McCarthy, I don't see anyone trumping Carlton with #13. Think he'll go to either the Blues or to Fremantle. Carlton choosing between him and a possible sliding midfielder (Freeman, Taylor for example) will shape the draft.

I think brisbane would be crazy not to take a gamble on conlon with one of their picks in the 30's. Its an obvious need for their side. It may backfire but with all those picks in that range they can take the risk.

got wayy too many tall forward options at this stage, jackson paine, trent west, jono freeman joining paperone, close, lisle martin, along with browny, merretts a swingman and we are most likely getting mcguane and are going to keep staker think we will cut our losses with a few of the players end of next season like lisle and martin or move them into defence and try our luck with kpp prospects next year

Has Close shown much yet?

Don't have the time to update properly today, what with moving profiles around and all that. But, here is the updated first round to tide you over. No major changes, just a reshuffle really.

1. GWS - Tom Boyd
2. GWS - Matthew Scharenberg
3. St Kilda - James Aish
4. Western Bulldogs - Josh Kelly
5. Gold Coast - Jonathon Marsh
6. Collingwood - Blake Acres
7. Brisbane - Marcus Bontempelli
8. North Melbourne - Luke McDonald
9. Melbourne - Lewis Taylor
10. Collingwood - Kade Kolodjashnij
11. West Coast - Christian Salem
12. Richmond - Jack Billings
13. Carlton - Cameron McCarthy
14. GWS - Luke Dunstan
15. Sydney - Ben Lennon
16. Geelong - Nathan Freeman
17. Fremantle - Darcy Gardiner
18. St Kilda - Jarman Impey
19. St Kilda - Dom Sheed
20. Gold Coast - Isaiah Miller

Agree with your sum of the Lions list Chris, with Yeo Doc and Polec out we are missing some run from the back half, especially hen Yeo was pretty much best 22. We will certainly need someone who can play off the back half and in time into the midfield rotations to give us some run and carry, hopefully with some speed to break the lines. We also need jut some midfield options, inside and outside so perhaps best available at 22 and 25 for mids. Outside of that I'm hoping Archie Smith falls to us in the PSD which gives us a young developing ruck, the only thing missing would be a KPD with most of our defenders getting towards the end, and only Clake stepping up so far. I could see 28,33 or 34 going on a KPD to start getting someone ready to take over in 2-3 years. Perhaps outside that a zippy small forward would be nice as well.

I don't see us taking a ruck or forward option. We have Bergs with Martin and now West as back up, and we have Lisle, Staker, Martin, Brown as forward options with Close, Paps, Freeman an Paine as young developing forwards. Ruck depth is good, better if we can get Archie Smith in the PSD. With the picks we have I think we should be looking to get at least 3 mids out of it to cover the outs. Tidy ball users should be priority I think.

As Rahul mentioned, my draft isn't a prediction of what will happen. I figure the AFL website does that, so I'll stick to my own rankings - with some needs based selections as well obviously. So, Salem over Sheed for West Coast is simply because I rate Salem as the better player. I know that wont happen in the real thing.

And in terms of the Saints, if by some miracle they were to get both James Aish and Dom Sheed then I think they'd be well off in taking someone like a Jarman Impey instead of another inside ball winner like Dumont or Dunstan. They'd already be getting that clearance winner in Sheed, so they could bring some life to an otherwise fairly vanilla side in picking Impey. Realistically though, Sheed wont be available so it may well be a Dumont/Dunstan who is picked instead - but that doesn't change the Impey selection.

Chris25 - When are you going to update this? Appreciate your efforts. Cheers

I'm doing it at the moment. Just finished the third round, but wont post until it's all done and I have the time. In the mean time, it's just the new first round that I posted on this page.

Impey's a good idea and I hear we might have been pretty keen on him, but possibly not now that we only have picks in the top 20. If we'd still had a pick like 25 he probably would have come right into the frame, but with 18 and 19 I think we might be looking more at a Taylor, if he slides, or else a Hartung, to likely go with an "inside mid", at the other late-teens pick.

How do you rate Taylor, Impey and Hartung with Ben Kennedy, who went at 19 last year?

I'd go...

Lewis Taylor
Jarman Impey
Ben Kennedy
Billy Hartung

Taylor is the best by far, he is a top 10 talent - can't see any possible way that he lasts until St Kilda pick. Kennedy and Impey would be close, but I prefer Impey's goal sense and general x-factor.

Has Close shown much yet?

Came into the season injured, showed a bit later on but still a work in progress. It's interesting to note that when Voss was sacked he went straight to Browney in the hospital and told him he was sacked but they also discussed 1 player - Close. They both agreed that Browney will work very closely (excuse the pun) with Close because they see obviously see the potential there.

Extrapolating that, do you believe West Coast would take Acres at pick 11 if available?

I think they still take Dom Sheed. I think they take Sheed, regardless of who is available.

West Coast need a sure thing for their midfield. I don't see Sheed becoming a true star of the competition, but he should have a long career. And most importantly, it will be in the midfield. Don't think they'll be taking any risks in terms of drafting a player, only to have him develop into a flanker.

Thanks for the update. Agree that Scharenberg will go 2.

I just can't see the Swans passing up Gardiner if he is available. I think GWS will take him (somewhat out of spite) one place ahead of us though. Interesting to see Acres and Marsh that high up, I have hopes that if Gardiner is gone we could pick up one of those two or Kolodjashnij with our first pick.

So your expectations would be something like the career of Matt Boyd or Jordan Lewis for Sheed?
What are your expectations for someone like Acres?

Yeah, that would be about where I see Dom Sheed. He'd be a key part of the midfield, but might not win many awards.

I really like Blake Acres. He has everything I look for in a player, particularly a midfielder - size, aggression, versatility. His decision making and skills are a highlight. Acres is just one of those players who has time and space, all the time. I think he has a slightly more advanced midfield game than Bontempelli. So I would pick him top 10, and wait for him to develop fully into a David Mundy type midfielder. But it sounds as though not all teams are convinced on his role at AFL level, particularly as to whether he is a true midfielder or primarily a flanker. Worst case would be a David Myers situation, where he flashes potential but never makes the transition fully to permanent time midfielder.

Apparently Sam Landsberger said in the live chat that we will take someone named Jake Needham, any idea who that is? and if so what sort of player he is?

Cheers mate
