Well, I just took our first pick in the BigFooty Phantom Draft. Cameron McCarthy was available, but I went for Jonathon Marsh instead. You can see my write up here. Must admit, I was tempted to pick a back flanker. But there will be plenty of time for that later. :p
Chris I loved your post and Marsh seams to me to be a great fit for Freo .
I would be suprised if he was still there at pick 17 but Ill bow to your superiour knowledge .
Do you think we have any chance of getting Giles as well because then my Christmas list would be complete if we get him as well .
Thanks for your posts :)

Having tried to do a needs based phantom draft, I perused the knowledge laid bare by Chris & a couple of others.
From what I seem to have gleaned it is that there aren't many KPF's there, but the ones that are there apart from Boyd, are not too disimilar in quality. Is McCarthy that much better than Hourigan, Apeness, etc?
Maybe our usual strategy of picking the best available nets us another midfield star like Salem looks like he will be?
Oh the great unkown!!
I love it!!!

My thoughts exactly, but the consensus is that the mids generally run much deeper this draft anyway and they'd be able to do this with their plethora of picks in the 2nd rd.

The reality is nobody here really knows who is going to be drafted where. You could very well be correct, it would make sense for them to stock up on mids in the 2nd round. Personally, I don't think Brissy are that desperate for a tall forward that they'd pay overs for McCarthy. They got Paine in the trade period, have Martin and Paperone too. They are however, desperate for midfield class and although they do need a viable replacement for Brown, taking McCarthy at 7 is well over value, especially as it would mean missing out on a gun mid. This draft even as far as mids go is shallow. I think they'll be going for value and the best available with their first pick, and looking at needs during the second round. Although, I must admit I do like all the speculation about who's going where and why in the build up to the draft. Carlton I think are in the same boat and the fact that they took Everitt during the trade period increases our chances of snaring him at 17.

This more or less mirrors my thoughts towards how things will pan out, I can't see it happening - the thought of them overlooking a top 10 mid for one of few touted talls in this draft doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, with no disrespect to McCarthy. I'm not sure you'd take the gamble on him with a top 10 pick every year over a top 10 mid. Even though Carlton took Andreas - they worry me the most in terms of potentially taking McCarthy before us.

Chris25, would love to hear your thoughts on Tom Vandeleur. Seems very much unheralded amongst the all-knowing BF community, but watching his higlights package he looks like an excellent prospect, very agile and fast for a 193cm unit. Nice Johno back-up?

Brissy are more likely to steal (eg) Sheed from under the Eagirls than taking McCarthy from us IMO. The value of midfielders available would be too much to ignore. I actually think the same could be said of Carlton too. Whilst they could do with another tall, I think a top-notch midfielder will be more of a necessity for them.
Call me an optimist, but I reckon we'll have the choice of quite a few talls including McCarthy, Marsh, Apeness and Hourigan. Naturally we will then opt for a skinny hbf anyway! :)

Took my second pick in the BF Draft today - George Hewett. As I mentioned in my write up, it wouldn't surprise me at all if we took him with our first pick. Yes, he is a midfielder. But he is basically the definition of a Fremantle midfielder. I think we'd take him over a KPP - even Cam McCarthy.

Very interesting if we did, especially as we just lost a pretty reasonable midfield prospect (Mitchie) due to a perceived lack of opportunities. I suspect Sheriden, Neale, Crozier etc probably felt like the bar just got raised a little higher when Sylvia was recruited. And with the possibility that Mora, Ibbotson and Pearce re-entering the 22 calculations next year our midfield possibilities and depth is better than I have ever seen.

Yet we wanted to keep Michie. I think the club recognises that we are still missing another bigger bodied, inside ball winner. And clearances have still been an issue for us. So I think there will be some level of 'drafting for now' this year, particuarly early on - which would possibly rule out McCarthy. Hewett isn't quite as ready made as say a Luke Dunstan or even Michie, but still more so than a KPP.

I have no inside word to base this on, but I can just see us going midfield first up and looking to develop KPPs for the future with late/rookie picks.

Chris normally I would agree with you but Marsh offers so much more than the other names put forward .
Marsh has that Adam Goodes feel about him and with the reduction in rotations his type of player will be in even more demand than ever so if he is still available he would be my 1st pick at 17 .
Given that in his junior footy he has had experience all over the ground .

Tom Vandeleur, my good man?

Anywhere from late second to early fourth for Vandeleur in my opinion. I've seen varying reports on his height - from 191cm to 193cm. The taller he is, the earlier he'll go. Solid rebounder, as well as second/third tall defender.

Chris, I had a look at the Nankervis highlights and while overage he looked really good. He was the All Australian ruck but kicked a lot of goals and very mobile at 200cm. Worth a look at pick 37?

Wouldn't have thought so. We've got 5 rucks already and a couple more who can pinch hit.

The way he moves has a touch of O'Meara about it
