1970 over Collingwood. 44 points behind doesn't sound impossible nowadays, but then it was a hole you just didn't crawl out of. Particularly in a GF

Perhaps more significant than the improbable victory is the manner of it. Carlton had experimented with play on, running, handball footy from time to time but to bring it out so dramaticly to win a GF ensured the footy world took notice.

That match was the birthplace of modern footy, and for that is my Club's finest hour.

I would have gone with the 1970 GF, but I wasn't born and so can't make a proper call on the emotion and impact.

Probably right though. :thumbsu:

Finest - 2004 GF.

Other than that though - I reckon beating Adelaide in the first showdown was pretty special. The build up to the game was bigger in many ways than finals. Tickets were like hen's teeth. The atmosphere was incredible.

Then when we got up, despite being massive underdogs, was a great feeling and one that signalled our arrival as a force in the AFL.

Darkest - Black Saturday, 2007

Off-field would definitely have to be November 26, 2009.

The look on Rossy Lyon's face when Luke Ball's name was read out at selection 30.

TRS managed to take a few snaps from that night and the one of Rossy was absolute gold. :D

You just have to see that photo to understand completely as to why.

the 1954 premiership is the obvious choice.

BUT I'd have to say the 1997 season, even though we lost the PF by 2 points.
We'd finished 15th the year before and everyone had written us off.

The year we should have won the comp, it took a miracle 30mins from D Jarman to end that.

All I can say is . . . wow!

You have issues.

Sure about that? You lost a Grand Final to Collingwood.

Yeah but I like bringing it up, my favourite stat used to be the bombers haven't won a spoon since the swans last won a flag. But that got ruined in '05. Darkest moment probably '99 preliminary final of the '90 grand final. Probably '99 a bit more, I was silent until the grand final.

Just imagine if you followed a team that had never won a spoon in 120 years :)

Well yeah our opponent was riding on the joy of being Bradburies the whole finals series, while we'd been clinical. No one would've stopped Adelaide on that day, but in terms of a long period of time, St Kilda of 1997 were better than anyone that year.

Agree 100%. Quite possibly our greatest victory, aside from our GF wins, I love to watch that match. I'm pretty sure Judd wasn't playing that night either, he pulled out with injury just before the match IIRC.
It was great watching that tosser Walls having to try to think of something positive to say about us after the hammering he gave us in that pathetic article. He thought the swannies were home and hosed.

Yeah, Juddy played and went on to do this in the first few minutes;

You guys were terrible in that Grand Final, on the day we would have taken it

You're sounding like a Collingwood supporter. :)

FWIW, after Winmar's father passed away the night before the game (on top of other issues in the leadup), we were always going to struggle. In hindsight he probably shouldn't have played but how on earth do you not play him?

You might have a point but equally you may have stuggled to close the deal in the GF like you did in the PF.
