Your take on the umpiring last night

Now let me just say that I'm not for one second suggesting the umpiring cost us the match. We were never going to win last night. You're just unstoppable around the clearances, and nothing was going to change that.

But that aside, just wanted to hear your take on the umpiring standard. I thought it was fairly horrible from a Collingwood perspective, but I also noticed several things Geelong fans should have been livid with.

I seriously think that was the worst umpiring of an AFL game this year.

If McLaren gets the Grand Final, it may not be worth watching (well, not for me, surely for you :p).

Your thoughts?

(PS. We were robbed. Right. In front. Of me.)

Agree with the OP and understand that you know it wasnt the reason for the loss, but when the umpires are as bad as they were last night, it can make the game even more frustrating to watch.

I was bewildered last night. I nearly watched in with some people, none of whom had ever watched a match, and I wonder how I would have explained half the decisions last night. I think I would have spent a lot of time say "that free was for this reason. Yes I know thats not what happened but..."

I think sometimes the umpires have trouble whent he speed and intensity goes up. Just like some players cant handle it, I think some of the maggots struggle.

Wouldnt want to be an umpire though, hardest job in the game and their employer constantly hangs them out to dry.

umpire was shocking. at least it didnt affect the result. ask the bulldogs supporters what they think of the umpires

They where shocking both ways last night with the Cats on the recieving end of a few extras. But with the 3 clowns last night ordinary does that mean we get Razor Ray next week? Oh please God no.

The first lot of decisions that caught my eye were random interpretations of the 15m rule. Two Geelong marks early on that looked to have been from kicks that travelled at least 15m (if not 20m) were called play on. Then a bit later in the game a Collingwood mark was paid that was clearly from a kick that looked to have travelled around 10m.

Other things that were a bit strange were the 'no advantage' calls. Both teams missed out on advantages that would have led directly to a score. These were at points in the match when the scores were quite close and so the result could have changed momentum for a while.

McLaren got worse the longer the game went on.He must've nodded off while giving 50 to Mooney,as it was closer to 70.Then there was the 50 he gave to Goldsack towards the end of the 2nd qtr.He gave it against Byrnes who tackled Goldsack after he'd marked but Goofy had definately signalled play on,suggesting either Goldsack moved off his mark or it wasn't 15m.

That kick went about 5 metres, definitely play on and he signalled it. That was hopeless umpiring. We got the better of it overall but geez if it is close next week I hope the bloody umpires can get it right for once.

Doesn't concern me one bit about the Umpiring last night but I bloody hope it's good next week and we don't get Razor Ray!
Scott McLaren is a closet Pies supporter. He nearly cost us the 2007 Prelim Final by giving that soft free kick to Rocca in the dying minutes that got the Pies within five points of us. And he was terrible last night.
But who seriously cares about the Umpiring last night, we won and we're into the Granny again! :D:thumbsu:

At half-time the frees were 15-8 in favour of Collingwood, and McLaren seemed to be wearing black and white under his yellow.

I thought the standard of umpiring lifted after the main break, but if any of those three walk on the MCG next week then it's a joke.

PS: Was lucky enough to be there, and then watched it on TV. The umpiring seemed almost respectable on TV, which was weird.

The umpiring in both games was crap - I sign of a good umpire is you dont notice them - There was some ordinary decisions in both games. One of the best umpire going around Stuart Wenn did not even get a gig on the weekend, Yet you get fools like McClaren and Chamberlain runny around.

I just hope they dont try and grand stand next week and let the game flow.

The 50m against Dasher was an absolute disgrace. As was the holding the ball against Hawk. The 50m we got was about 60m and the Ablett free in the square - well that was 'Brad Johnson-like' wily play by Gaz in getting out of the umpire's field of vision and having O'Brien fall on him. Wasn't too happy with the Scarlo free that resulted in a Pies goal but they explained what they were thinking, with Scarlo taking the pill to ground while tackled.

And the discrepancy between some 8m kicks being paid and 20m kicks not being paid was a joke.

But unlike Friday night, they had NO BEARING WHATSOEVER on the outcome.

Great call mate, You blokes got your fair share, the Ablett one stands out but we also got ours...Byrnes tackles a bloke because its not 15 metres and McLaren calls play on so Byrnes tackles and then he pays 50!!! WTF

I haven't seen a replay of Ablett's free in the goalsquare but in real time it seemed textbook to me - Ablett looking at the ball, O'Brien looking at Ablett with his hands either holding or pushing Ablett in the chest.

Pies fans have been going ape about it.

The Byrnes free against and subsequent 50m penalty was the worst decision of the year, bar none. It's passe, I know. McLaren was right there, with a clear view of everything and ballsed it up royally.

The standard of umpiring last night (and in both games this weekend) has been the worst finals umpiring I have witnessed. Which is a real shame because I think the first two weeks were pretty good and umpired in true finals spirit - just pay the obvious ones.

I thought is was appalling in the first half. That second quarter was the worst I've seen all year, worse than the saints/dogs game.

Luckily when the game opened up the umpiring improved dramatically.

The first time I saw it, I thought Ablett was extremely fortunate to get the free kick, but on subsequent viewing, it was brilliant milking of the free from Ablett. O'Brien had his back to the ball, Ablett fell over and O'Brien fell on top of him. From the umpires' point of view, that would be a free kick.

They pay to many soft frees. Its a final for F's sake. Let the boys play, put the whistle in your ass and only pay it when it is really really needed.

Maybe they did that, but were suffering from flatulence. :p

Would explain the random whistle when two players were going for the ball :p

The umpires were to scared to make calls at the risk of making the wrong calls and turning the game. That is why there was dozens of calls that should have been holding the ball (both ways) but were let go. I don't think it affected the outcome in the slightest but if the game was closer it may have had a real impact. Umpires need to be more confident in their calls. But more so need to make the correct calls.

I do have to say the 50 against Byrnes after play on was called made me laugh.

Going to watch the game again now so i am sure i will remember something else.

There were a few that baffled me.

1) The one where Byrnes goaled and it was brought back to the center. WTF was that for?

2) The Ablett Goal square, never should be a free kick.

3) Harley with a textbook spoil somehow a free kick.

4) 5m kick followed by a 50 (which had to be paid)

5) Mooney's 80m penalty against Didak

6) Hawkins holding the ball

These are just the one that I remember but I was at the game so I'd have to see them again before I could comment with confidence.

One that annoyed me was the 50m to Brown. Yes, technically it was there, but like the commentators said, his opponent was goal side of him. What was he meant to do? Let him go and allow him to run into an open goal?
