Very happy with who the Hawks picked up in the Rookie draft, especially McEntee who sounds like a likely prospect, the thing is though, why were these players passed in the National draft? 70-80 picks, 16 clubs passed on these kids, there's obviously some doubts on some part of their game, be it:
Pace
Reaction time
Commitment
Ability
Mental issues
New to the game/still developing
Late developers

Without bagging anyone of them, does anyone have any thoughts on why certain players weren't picked up in the Nat draft and were left for the rookie draft.
If and when responding please bare in mind that nothing is achieved by silly over the top responses.
Any thoughts on Luke McEntee greatly appreciated.

McEntees question mark is probably his kicking. We'll have to teach him the Nick Holland quick handball. :p

Markovic had a bad ankle injury which might have put some off. Also, Eastern played him in the ruck a bit (as a 192cm) until they played him at KP which showed his talents.

Gilhams doubt would be his weight.

McGlynn was a late developer. Came from Vandenberg country and took last year at Box Hill to settle in and gain fitness. He was like a new man in 2005 and was both reliable and dangerous in the guts.

Very Happy with picking up Priddis, he averaged 39 possessions in the WAFL this year and was a certainty for the Sandover, however it didnt turn out that way.

Armstrong I guess deserves a 2nd chance, he has had problems with injury. M Embley ditto, moves so fast for a big man, surprised we picked him over Spaanderman still. Membley is highly rated by Woosh as a real long term prospect

Im happy we picked up some more mature aged players, we didnt need any more youngsters. God knows we have enough of them for now.

McEntee- as everyone knows I am a big fan but why wasn't he picked up in the draft is a good question.......
Pace - 2.95 for 20m, so he is midfielder quick so that wasn't it
Reaction time - brilliant reflexes and awareness of what is around him so that wasn't it
Commitment - cant comment as I dont know but it could have been an issue
Ability - no left foot, right foot accurate but no depth, handballs are good enough, tap work second to none in this draft
Mental issues - cant comment
New to the game/still developing - basketball background only 2 years in the game
Height - 197cm some think is to short for a ruckman
Weight - 89kg some think he wont bulk up enough
Jump - the best in this years crop
Flexibility - this is his big downfall in that most have him as a ruckman and a ruckman only. Has no runs on the board in key positions and does not look like he would be good in a key position. This means if he doesn't make it as a ruckman he wont make it. Has all the physical attributes of a key forward so it may not be a lost cause.

Markovic

late bloomer, showed a bit but not enough in ruck and at CHB in the TAC but went forward in the last 4/5 games and creamed them before dislocating his ankle something shocking when landing from a mark in the goal square in the elimination/qualifying final which would have been his 5th goal halfway through the second quarter. Poor at ground level. Question about his pace. Not being able to do the tests at state screening wouldn't have helped his cause.

Gilham three years on the powers list although never got his chance to show what he can do. Done enough in the SANFL to say that he might be good enough but from a clubs point of view you could feel confident that no one was very keen on him although some showed interest so it was always going to be if he is available late in the rookie draft we will take him, if anyone wants to pay more for him good luck to them.

Gilham, Dawson and Thurgood:eek: Whitnall could eat the lot of them and still be hungry - joking. May need to get Protein shakes happening. Interesting on McEntee, new to Football, could explain his dodgy kicking.

Takes more than just winning the ball to be a good footballer. If getting the ball was all that was required, Mark McGough would be a star AFL footballer.

Mission (or anyone esle for that matter), you got any info on Jason Roe and/or Leonard Clark?

Apart from that we picked up Cheynee Stiller from Zillmere locally - trialled with us last year and had an improved season this year. Qld kids can take a little longer to come on so it's no surprise to see the likes of Kannis and Roffey overlooked. Give them another year at senior level in the AFLQ and see if they come on a bit.

Rookied Luke Forsyth too. Really hope he can show his wares and get over his OP. Had one year on the list with us and now drops back to the rookie list.

Add to that Hamill, Pask and Harding staying on for another year, and the two Irish boys it's a pretty full rookie list. Surprised we didn't give Leigh Ryswyk another go, though.

He is a pretty good kick though and kicks goals, only question over him is he is slow as hell (bit like ol Fletch when we first picked him up, play similiar too). ANyone who knows anything bout WAFL footy knows Priddis was the most unlucky player ever, he was clearly robbed of the Sandover, if ya try to contest that your an idiot

Jason Roe - go to the port board and a couple of threads on him if you look back. Another brisbane pick looking to help out your defence. Almost the perfect replacement for Darryl White.

Leonard Clark - WHO?????????????????????????????????

Glad to see Tom Davidson picked up by the doggies. If he can stay on the field in 2006, he is a chance to be promoted to the senior list (via some other poor unfortunate player injury) & break into the doggies 22 by mid season. Good luck to him, he deserves another shot.

Rookie listing Stephen Gilham seems like a waste of time. Its already known that he's good enough for SANFL/VFL level football, what he needs is AFL exposure.

Geeks chill on Embers for a moment.

Anyone having a go actually now what a Priddis is or looks like? Sandover voting was a joke this year, he should have won it.

Thanks Mission. Saw the thread on Roe.

Clark is from West Adelaide I think - must be a Shaun Rehn pick.

I have been looking for information on Leonard Clark from West Adelaide but nothing to be found anywhere. A true smoky.
Anyone has any idea who this bloke is and what he brings to the Lions?
Shaun Rehn coached him so the likelihood is that he would have recommended him to the Lions, but what are his stats, abilities etc...?
So far all we know is he is a ruckman.

Lenny Clark would have been chosen on Shaun Rehn's recommendation, as a longer-term prospect.

He came to West Adelaide from a local club two years ago and quickly made his way into the league team, looking pretty good. His 2005 season was cut short by a shoulder injury which kept him out for most of the year, although he was named B.O.G earlier in the year.

Weaknesses: Inexperience, injury problems and needs a solid season.

Strengths: He's tall (6'7" approx.), fantastic work ethic and plenty of improvement in him.

He's worth keeping on a rookie list. In a year's time he might be valuable.
