Happy we got some kids already with a little experience...
But very dissapointed we didnt pick up some local kids.... with the likes of kannis, spurr, roffey.... I think Brisbane may think kannis is a little young to be rookied still being 17 but who knows

Or maybe they just didn't think they were up to it. Either way, a year or two in the system will benefit them if they've got the ability. Like Stiller this year, Drummond in previous years being passed over when you're 19 is not the end of the world. In Kannis' case he should be eligible again next year for u18 duty.

Steven Armstrong = Dud ...
WCE will be lucky to get 30 - 40 games out of him.

I would have thought getting 30-40 games out of a rookie is a pretty good result.

Given that he was effectively drafted about 100 overall and most rookies don't make it into a second season of being into an AFL list, 30-40 games from a rookie would be a bonus.

I have been looking for information on Leonard Clark from West Adelaide but nothing to be found anywhere. A true smoky.
Anyone has any idea who this bloke is and what he brings to the Lions?
Shaun Rehn coached him so the likelihood is that he would have recommended him to the Lions, but what are his stats, abilities etc...?
So far all we know is he is a ruckman.

AFL SHOCK FOR LEN

The meteoric rise of former Murtoa footballer Lenny Clark, 22, has continued with the ruckman winning selection on an AFL club rookie list.
Clark, who appeared in state league football in Adelaide almost by mistake, will join the Brisbane Lions after the club selected him with pick 22 in yesterday’s rookie draft.
Clark has played for West Adelaide in the SANFL for the past 18 months and told the Mail-Times his drafting came as a surprise.
“I’m absolutely over the moon. I’m very shocked, I didn’t expect this at all,” he said. “I was at work and Brisbane called in the morning to say they’d taken me with their last pick and that they’d get in touch with me later on to give me more details. It’s all happened so quick, it’s very hard to believe.”
Clark, who works for an accounting firm in Adelaide, moved to S.A. four years ago to study a bachelor of commerce degree.
He joined West Adelaide on invitation from coach and former Adelaide premiership player Shaun Rehn who watched him play amateur football with Edwardstown early last year.
“I came over to Adelaide and didn’t play footy for the first year and during that time I came back and played a few games for the Burras in the Wimmera League,” he said. “The following year I played amateurs and then Shaun Rehn approached me to see if I wanted to have a go in the SANFL.”
Clark said he played a consistent year in 2004 but injuries interrupted his season this year.
“I had a niggling problem with my knee this year and missed a lot of games,” he said. “I had the knee cleaned up at the end of the season and I’m about to start running, but because of the injury I wrote myself off. I had a few phone calls from a couple of clubs, but no real indication, so I didn’t expect anything.”
He said he was looking forward to moving to Brisbane to try to make his mark at AFL level.
“Now I’ve just got to train hard once I get up there and take advantage of the opportunity,” he said. “It’s important I work hard because you don’t get many chances at the big time and I want to play senior footy. There’ll be a fair few blokes in line to get a game at Brisbane before me. They have some of the best ruckmen going around in Clark Keating and Jamie Charman and I’m sure they’ll be awesome to learn from.”
Former Burras coach David Delahunty, who coached Clark in under-17’s, said he was delighted to hear of the news.
“I’m absolutely rapt, it’s just fantastic,” he said. “It doesn’t really come as a surprise to me because he’s a kid who is six feet seven inches, he can kick with both feet, he can jump and he’s very athletic. What does surprise me is how he slipped through the Wimmera ranks and never made the Rebels under-18 team and the likes.”
Rookies cannot play AFL senior games unless clubs have vacancies caused by long-term injury or retirement.

The guy who won it didnt even turn up cos he thught Priddis had it in the bag, How someone who avgs 39 possessions doesnt win the award is beyond me

how someone averages 39 posessions in the Wafl for the who;e season and doesnt get picked in the top 10 of the national draft is beyond me, he must have terrible disposal skills, u sure these posessions weren't accumulatd from kicking out from full back whilst his team was being flogged.

He plays for Subi in the WAFL, one of the top teams over the past couple of years.

He mainly got passed over due to his pace but like Chad Fletcher, if he works hard enough he may still be able to make it.

Jason Roe is an Aboriginal player who used to be on Collingwood's rookie list 2-3 years ago. I think an ankle or foot injury ruined his 1 or 2 year stint as a rookie. From what I've heard is a medium sized defender (187cm-190cm) who can play tall.

More so a poor attitude rather than an injury is what cost him his place. However, probably more mature now though so more likely to put in the work required. Was never a question of ability.

Opinions on Grima

Phantom drafts all over the place had him going earlier than Rookie
Lingsface , 17
Missionpossible , 43
Weaver , 25
Cursed Cat , 33
Footydraft , 28
Burgatron , 47

Admittedly a very even draft so very tough to call positions but one would think Grima could be a better pickup than the ave longshot 192 player.10 goals with a crook ankle, he must have something.
For the Cats one would hope he can put weight on a bit easier than some of the other twigs they have picked

I don't know why the Eagles got him to be honest. I'm sure that the swans would have picked him up the very next pick though. Maybe it's payback... :D

Could be more to do with the depth of the draft this year

Seem to remmember West Coast not wanting to trade for picks over 30ish in the regular draft

My thoughts exactly.

You'd look at a bloke who got 39 possessions once in the WAFL, let alone averaged that. Extraordinary numbers.

Priddis trained with the Crows last year, and was passed over due to serious doubts about his leg speed. He does look like a footballer, though - but perhaps he can only play at the slower speed of a state league -

Sounds like he could be Sam Mitchell II (i.e. Greg Williams III).

Let's see:

Alan Toovey - Was predicted by most to be drafted in the #30 to #50 range in the National Draft.

The clear knock on him is size. At 189cm, he's slightly undersized for a key position backman. In addition to this, he's not a great kick. He is, however, a strong man on man defender, and was in the Top 10 at Draft Camp for 20m sprint and vertical leap. He is also tested against senior players, holding down full back for Claremont in the WAFL.

Daniel Nicholls - Was always a smokey to be drafted, but was rated very highly by some people.

The only real knock I can see on him is his size. He's a little small for AFL at 175cms, but other than that, he has pace, a good left foot kick, and is a tought inside player. He averaged 25 possessions a game at TAC Cup level playing for the Grand Finalist Dandenong Stingrays.

Shannon Cox - He is the prototype of the player rookie lists were meant for.

A talented, 19 year old indigenous player that, despite being just 187cm, has been played out of position in the ruck for much of his footy so far. Despite this, he has obvious talent, and it will be up to him to see if he can make it at AFL level.

Very pleased with our selections:

Nicholls seems to have something about him - class, pace...maybe a bit of the x-factor. Very pleased.
Cox - bit of a smokey, looked ok at training.
Toovey - was always going to be a Magpie in the Rookie Draft. Sounds a bit like Richard Cole (lack of vision), but also sounds promising at the same time.

Very happy with who the Hawks picked up in the Rookie draft, especially McEntee who sounds like a likely prospect, the thing is though, why were these players passed in the National draft? ... Without bagging anyone of them, does anyone have any thoughts on why certain players weren't picked up in the Nat draft and were left for the rookie draft.

As a general sort of rule lots of the rookie-list choices are guys that are very talented juniors who don't quite fit the AFL template.

In many cases the rookie-picks are the best and fairest winners and stand-out juniors. The guys like Ryan Jackson who dominated junior footy, guys like Neaves who played first-ruck for Metro and guys like Toovey with All-Australian jumpers.

But they are all square-pegs in round holes. The don't really have an AFL position or role, but have been too good in juniors to pass over completely.

A guy like Brad Sugars is great as a goal-kicking HFF (bit like Pettifer) but clubs would prefer a guy his size to be a 25-touch midfielder who kicks goals, instead of a 10-touch flanker.

Grima is small for a FF, doesn't do enough at ground level, and relies almost on his marking. AFL clubs don't like that type of player very much. No one really wants the next Sav Rocca anymore. But again he has done enough in juniors that you sort of have to give him a go.

A guy like Priddis has done so well in the WAFL that a club has to take him even if it is sort of against their will. He almost forced them to draft him. But again he isn't quick enough for the flanks, not quite skillful enough, and tends to turn into trouble instead of away from it.

....

Why is he small weaver. At 192/193 he would be taller than Lloyd. If he can jump its a nice size, not too awkward, not too small. You must have thought he was worth 25?

Kannis was born 15 Dec 87 according to Carnival Program. He's 2 weeks and a bit out from showing up again next year. Or, is he still eligible for 18's State team at that age? He had one and 1/2 years off because of 2 hernia operations (this year was his first year back), maybe he'll become eligible again because of that? They do use some 19's in State squads don't they? Apparently he weighed in at 81k at State Screening and weighed in at 89k at Southport Sharks Senior training 2 weeks ago. He should be a tank next year.

James Fantasia (Adelaide's recruiting manger) was asked in one of the radio interviews prior to Pre-season and rookie drafts why was a player like Grima overlooked in the ND and would he be a chance to be picked up by us since he was been training with us for a while. His answer was that by the latest mesurements he was 191 cm and an "in-between" height so he doesn't have a set position at AFL level.

If Grima is 191 cm as Fantasia said and if he had a hand-span smaller than average for his height, he will be struggling to play KP at AFL level.

Time will tell if he makes it and what position he makes it in.

He actually has quite good disposal, recruiters let him go due to his perceived lace of pace which he has improved a great deal with help from a sprint coach, to the stage that he now has average inside midfielder pace with the graet ability to win hard contested footy which will make him, in my opinion, a quality AFL player.

No you're right, I was getting mixed up - should be too old for u18's next year. K_L, I thought you said he was a monty to be drafted by the Lions?

Buggered if I know! Clark Keating told me he was. Beatson liked him, possibly him leaving might have a had something to do with it, or maybe could be his age.
